Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North America It has been the constant aim of the author to preserve a careful impartiality in dealing with matters of difference of view, and to give no judgment for which he has not been able to offer a sanctioning fact for its source. The men of those times were, like the men of the present, serious and in the main sincere, and faced complex problems for whose solutions they could not furnish the needed wisdom. The new day which Jefferson introduced, and to which Madison fell heir, was indeed unique. While it grew out of the old and was organically part of the early life of the nation, it was very properly regarded by many as in a true sense another era. The story of the period might well be entitled: How democracy interpreted nationality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the village of North Saint Paul, where this preface is written, the active citizens have been continually debating the alternative merits of an elected or of an appointive professional administration of their affairs. The villagers want economy and efficiency in government, but they do not want to lose any of their sense of being represented. Book excerpt: • A New Republic Best Book of the Year • The Globalist Top Books of the Year • Winner of the Maine Literary Award for Non-fiction Particularly relevant in understanding who voted for who during presidential elections, this is an endlessly fascinating look at American regionalism and the eleven “nations” that continue to shape North America According to award-winning journalist and historian Colin Woodard, North America is made up of eleven distinct nations, each with its own unique historical roots. In American Nations he takes readers on a journey through the history of our fractured continent, offering a revolutionary and revelatory take on American identity, and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and continue to mold our future. From the Deep South to the Far West, to Yankeedom to El Norte, Woodard (author of American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common Good) reveals how each region continues to uphold its distinguishing ideals and identities today, with results that can be seen in the composition of the U.S. Congress or on the county-by-county election maps of any hotly contested election in our history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great American Empire: Or, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Emperor of North America Do you believe that General Ulysses S. Grant seriously contemplates the destruction of the American Republic and the establishment of an American Empire upon its ruins, with himself at its head? Whether you believe it or not, there is evidence enough of this startling fact in the following pages to convince any candid reader that there is at least danger, in the near future, to our Republican institutions, and that it is time for every true American to be on his guard. The Plans, As revealed in this book, were arranged at the "private" and "confidential" interviews which General Grant held, while in Europe, with the rulers of the four great Empires, England, Germany, Austria and Russia, and were as follows: General Grant was to continue his "tour around the world" until just previous to the next Presidential campaign, when he would return to the United States and manipulate the wires in such a way as to secure the nomination by the National Republican Convention for a third term. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Rovellini: A Drama of the Disunited States of North America The books of Moses seem to have been written by other writers before him. This legislator, although he was a man of a great mind, his laws are not of God. The Creator, being perfect, could not be imperfect in his language, nor a tyrant to the Israelites and to other nations of His creation. Infernal, theologian rulers left to us the histories of seven thousand years. Not only millions of innocent and better educated nations than their conquerors must have been annihilated; their historical records must have been burned, as we know the burned library of Alexandria, sciences and arts. We, the posterity of those selfish rulers, we rue the great loss of the past age progress! The selfish monsters exterminated, even, the memory or records of those unfortunate nations! And such tyrannical vandalism was perpetrated for wishing to appear, themselves, the first legislators to their posterity! And forced their children to believe, they bad spoken, face to face, with God! Hence, was originated Theocracy, Monarchy, and Despotism. The democratic or republican government, being the only government for which God created mankind, it will never reach its perfection but from the true philosophy of man, free from all religious priestcraft. The only monuments of Central America tell us of nations whose generations must have been extinguished. The infinity of solar systems, do they not tell us that this world had no beginning? Had He lived in darkness during his first eternity, God could not be God. We can conceive our souls still existing into more subtile matter, but the Eternal Spirit, out of his creation, is an absurdity. To compare God and his creation with us, poor ephemeral insects, is nothing else but the foolish comparison of preachers with the chronometer and the watch-maker. Infinity has no end; like the number, it is space added to space, as eternity is time added to time. A certain space, or a certain time, have a beginning and an end. In the infinite space we may imagine a centre at every point, and in eternity, at every time, we can imagine the middle of the first and second eternities. During the first eternity, I know that my individuality was nothing, although I know, that my body and mind have been formed from the eternal elements or molecules. The annihilation of our soul, being too painful to me, my hope of the eternal future life is a great consolation for me on this mortal planet. But this divine consolation is perverted and taken from me, and from the hope of students, by ignorant and wily priests blessing the poor of mind and cursing the students of nature. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Provincial Governor in the English Colonies of North America This essay was in its original form presented as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Harvard University. It has since been revised and in considerable part rewritten. Though in the process Of revision many errors of fact and errors of judgment have been corrected, there are doubtless many which have escaped the author's notice, and which remain to be pointed out by others. It is hoped, however, that the conclusions here set forth may at least serve to provoke discussion and investigation in a comparatively unworked and exceedingly important field of research. Book Rational Communism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Communism: The Present and the Future Republic of North America Since the time of Sir Thomas More, theories in advance of the current ideas of the day have been contemptuously styled Utopian; but history clearly shows that all the great changes which have thus far taken place in the world, resulting in human prog ress, have been foreshadowed and set in motion by what were at first termed utopian or ideal follies. Since mankind have been continually making such mistakes in the past, is it not just possible that their political, industrial, and social systems have not as yet reached absolute perfection, and that better sys tems for the regulation of society may still be de vised than those now in vogue? Here, I trust, a few words in regard to myself may be excused, as showing with how little sympathy I at one time in my life regarded this hated Communism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro in America, and the Ideal American Republic Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, was elected president of the United States. Many of the prominent politicians of the South professed to see in his election an act of hostility to slavery and an encroachment upon the rights of the Southern people, and they finally in duced a large number of the States to try to secede from the Union and form a confederate government. The fundamental principle of the secession movement was the doctrine of State rights: that every State of the Union had the right to secede whenever the people thought it best for their own interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on the Policy of Recognizing the Independence of the Southern States of North America: And on the Struggle in That Continent I AM neither statesman nor lawyer, but amid the multiplicity of despatches, pamphlets, and speeches regarding the war now raging in the United States, the words of an ordinary, and an unprejudiced person, who has seen a good deal of the World, may have some weight with others, who like myself, feel a deep interest in that terrible struggle. And who does not? I have been to America, and have listened to the tall talk of New York about squashing the South in ninety days, and to the very questionable philanthropy of New England in its protestations against slavery. But no one could tell me how their dicta were to be carried into practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Had the French people abandoned their republican principles as unsound or as impracticable, or had they rather been deceived into the belief that, while they were having an empire in form, they were in reality enjoying the benefits of a republic? Book This Republic of Suffering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • An "extraordinary ... profoundly moving" history (The New York Times Book Review) of the American Civil War that reveals the ways that death on such a scale changed not only individual lives but the life of the nation. An estiated 750,000 soldiers lost their lives in the American Civil War. An equivalent proportion of today's population would be seven and a half million. In This Republic of Suffering, Drew Gilpin Faust describes how the survivors managed on a practical level and how a deeply religious culture struggled to reconcile the unprecedented carnage with its belief in a benevolent God. Throughout, the voices of soldiers and their families, of statesmen, generals, preachers, poets, surgeons, nurses, northerners and southerners come together to give us a vivid understanding of the Civil War's most fundamental and widely shared reality. With a new introduction by the author, and a new foreword by Mike Mullen, 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Book The Union of the Provinces of British North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Union of the Provinces of British North America Classic Reprint written by Joseph Cauchon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union of the Provinces of British North America A work entitled L'Union de L'Amerique Britannique du Nord, par l'Hon. Joseph Cauchon, Membre du Parlement Canadien, et Redacteur-en-chef du 'Journal de Quebec, ' has recently made its appearance. The well known abilities of the author, as a legislator and as a journalist, and his long acquaintance with public affairs, together with the importance of the subject, have been the motives which have induced me to translate this work, for the benefit of those who may not be versed in the French language. The subject of a Union of the British North American Provinces is treated, in all its bearings, from a French Canadian point of view, having reference, not only to the continuance of British connection, but to the preservation of those peculiar institutions of Lower Canada embraced in the words, 'Nos institutions, notre langue, et nos lois.' There is, however, no narrow-mindedness of thought or expression. The advantages to all the provinces, politically and commercially, are clearly shewn, and, while facts and figures are interesting, the writing is vigorous and convincing. The translator feels assured that the labor of translation will not have been altogether lost upon the thinking and intelligent portion of the English-speaking population of the province. He lays it before them, convinced that Mr. Cauchon's views will be appreciated, and his style of conveying ideas generally admired.
