When looking through texts of other periods it is searched for evidence how people at that time dealt with those problems. In the last 20 years the depiction of sexuality and the term of “gender” – what is masculinity/femininity? – became an important factor in analysing. Thus, in every period there was a depiction on how male and female have to behave and how affection and sexuality is shown. Comparing two literary pieces of art from one period, one can clearly see the discrepancy even presented by two different authors.While Shakespeare’s depiction of gender and sexuality has a more masculine tone in his tragedy "Coriolanus", the sonnet sequence "Astrophil and Stella", written by Phillip Sidney gives a more feminine picture of men and women.

Beginning with an overview of gender stereotypes and social hierarchies in Shakespeare’s times, referencing mainly Susan Almussen’s "Gender, Culture and Politics in England", as well as Stephen Orgel’s "Shakespeare, sexuality and gender", the uncovered results shall then be referred to the gender representation in the play at hand. Given the patriarchy present in early modern ages, the author will examine in how far this patriarchy is presented in Othello and how the female characters behave or should behave according to it. One of the male characters, Iago, stands behind most of the dramatic actions of the play – Using Prof Dr Heinz Antor’s "Constructing Alterity: Race, Gender, and the Body in Shakespeare’s Othello", the next chapter has the aim to examine the motivations behind his mischievous plans and how and against whom he performs them. Then the author is going to answer where the differences between male and female friendships lie and how they are characterized throughout the play. The last chapter mainly refers to Emily C. Bartels’ "Strategies of Submission: Desdemona, the Duchess, and the Assertion of Desire", and tends to find out if and how the female characters revolt against the patriarchal society they live in and which does not give them much room to criticize or even revolt against the social hierarchies.

Book excerpt: This book proceeds from the assumption that Shakespeare, so often perceived as the one writer who appears to have transcended the limits of gender, inevitably writes from the perspective of his own gender. From this perspective, whatever represents the Self is necessarily male; and the Other, which challenges the Self, is female. The author's approach gives us a fresh understanding of both Shakespeare's characters and the structure of the plays. The author defines genre in terms of the nature of the challenge offered by the Other to the Self. Using specific plays and characters of Shakespeare, the author shows how in tragedy the Other betrays or appears to betray the Self; in comedy the Other evades the social hierarchies dominated by versions of the male Self; in romance the Other comes and goes, leaving the Self bereft when she is gone and astounding him with happiness when she reappears. History is defined as a genre in which the masculine heroes confront no challenge from the Other but only from each other, from other versions of the Self. The book consists of a long theoretical introduction followed by chapters on comedy, history, and some individual plays: Hamlet, Antony and Cleopatra, Macbeth, Coriolanus, and The Tempest.

And Arden is “a realm where you can dress up and change your gender, change your way of life” (ibid.). I agree with this statement. But before my analysis, I want to elaborate on the relationship between sex and gender identity. Sex is determined by nature, whereas gender is a cultural construct which is influenced by power, ideology, class and ethnicity. To put it differently, women are not confined to be compassionate and submissive and men to be active and dominant just due to their biological differences. However, people in the 16th century were restricted to their traditional gender roles. For example, women were ‘The Angel in the House’ and men exerted control over ‘the weaker vessel’, which refers to women because of Christian traditions and allegedly scientific reasons. In As You Like It, we will find out the transcendence of restricted gender roles. To prove my thesis, I will first explore Rosalind’s female role playing and male role playing by virtue of the costume. Then Orlando’s acquisition of traditionally labeled feminine attributes is to be analyzed. In the last part of my essay, I will come to a conclusion about sexual politics in As You Like It.

It is also generally known as a modern Odyssey, a novel that reduces space and time. Alternatively, Hayman claims that Joyce’s writing is extraordinarily autobiographical; hence the protagonist Leopold Bloom’s character traits possibly bear resemblance to Joyce’s character traits. Assuming Ulysses refers to Joyce’s real life, many questions and concerns rise regarding the sexuality in the novel and indeed the protagonists Bloom and Molly Bloom since it had even been censored, criticised, and barred from the United States attributable to obscenity. The study of gender and sexuality in Ulysses will be the main aim of this paper. The main focus will be on Molly, who is one of the most discussed fictive characters yet the least understood one. Opinions differ when one examines Molly since her performance to her family and acquaintances are rather uncharacteristic of the time of Modernism. Especially her submissiveness to her husband, which is rather expected, is absent. Thus, it is particularly challenging to decipher whether she represents the “earth mother” or the “satanic mistress”. Moreover, it will be discussed about Bloom, who is the main protagonist, however, who has been set as the anti-hero. Additionally, Bloom’s and Joyce’s influence on Molly’s affair will be deepened to make an attempt to comprehend Molly’s character easier.

As this title suggests, I analyzed how Shakespeare construes female and male identity in Macbeth. As in many Shakespearean dramas the play starts with the destruction of order leading up to a crisis and ending in the restoration of order at the end of the play (Gelfert 32). The political order that is destroyed in the course of the play is King Duncan s natural and fair order which appreciates a unique set of masculine and feminine values. Macbeth murders King Duncan in order to usurp his throne. Macbeth s reign turns Duncan s order into chaos and moral order cannot return to Scotland until the tyrant ruler Macbeth is defeated by troops who fight for the restoration of Duncan s order, through the coronation of his son Malcolm. This essay deals with the question of how Shakespeare shapes female and male characters. As a matter of fact, female and male characters are ultimately involved in the destruction and restoration of Scotland. This involves questions such as: Which historical concepts does Shakespeare use to construe his male and female characters? Does he construe "typical" gender roles? And what happens when gender boundaries are crossed, when men develop feminine traits and women male ones? With special regard to the marriage of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, I also analyzed the interaction between the genders. In the course of my analysis, I used the term "gender", originating from Anglo-American feminist discourse, meaning "the social, cultural, and psychological meaning imposed upon biological sexual identity" (Showalter 1-2).
