Excerpt: ...world, and those gigantic monuments of early rule will, for ages, remain as lasting memorials of the good we have done and of the benefits we have conferred on the people of this country. But last they will, and it may happen that a thousand years hence, Mr. Brereton's ghost may still hover with anxious solicitude over the unbroken piers of the Towa Viaduct, when Macauley's New Zealander is sitting on the ruins of London Bridge." Mr. John Morris, Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces, in proposing Mr. Brereton's health at the opening, spoke as follows: "The completion of this railway is of the deepest interest to the officers of this commission, for there can be no doubt but that the opening of the railway will be a most important boom to these provinces. Hitherto the Nerbudda valley has been almost perfectly closed for four months of the year, but this will no longer be the case, and consequently for the future the prices of the Nerbudda valley will be equalized. Then, speaking of the works, I would express my thorough conviction that the success with which they have been crowned, and the solidity of their construction, is chiefly due to the untiring energy and the indefatigable labor of the chief engineer and his staff, who have worked with indomitable perseverance through heat, rain and disease to make up for the shortcomings of a former mistaken system which brought about the casualties of last year. Those labors alone-are sufficient to prove that the service is one of danger as well as toil. It is not for me to thank him formally, for that has already been done by a far more distinguished person; but having had opportunities of seeing their labors and estimating their value, I must take this opportunity of expressing my thanks...

Book Recollections of a Civil Engineer

Download or read book Recollections of a Civil Engineer written by D. H. Ainsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Civil Engineer: Experiences in New York, Iowa, Nebraska, Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado In June 1850, the writer commence] cng'neering on the Enlargement of the Erie Canal, in Wayne County New York. There was not a very large engineering force, the most of the work being in the villages of the county, and in building the new Clyde Lock, located about a mile west of the old one, and of the town; the lower or eastern level be ing lengthened that much. It was claimed at the time. That this change of location was to allow Gen'l William H. Ad ams to have the south end of his Sodus Canal at the lower level, but west of the old lock The old canal above the lock, which was five feet lift, was principally in cutting, as was most of the old Erie Canal. Near Clyde, the material was wasted in the rear of the towing-path which was there south of the canal, most of the town being on the opposite side. Preparatory to letting the contract for building this new piece of canal, test-pits were dug in this waste, show ing conclusively what kind of material was taken out in the construction of the old canal, but giving little intimation of what would be encountered in reducing the level five feet. Book Civil Engineering in Context

Download or read book Civil Engineering in Context written by Alan Marshall Muir Wood and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2004 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Alan Muir Wood sits in the pantheon of great civil engineers of the twentieth century. In Civil Engineering in Context, Sir Alan Muir Wood draws from his long career to place as he says 'civil engineering in context'. The book contains many personal reminiscences of his life as an engineer from early days as a wartime marine engineer in the Royal Navy, through his more than 25 year career as a Partner and Senior Partner with Halcrow and as a tunnelling engineer of world renown. Civil Engineering in Context also presents Sir Alan's strongly held and sometimes controversial views on how civil engineering as an industry has developed since the pragmatic enterprise of the nineteenth century, through a twentieth century where much of the momentum was lost, and how it should be developing in the twenty-first century. Sir Alan ranges across many topics which directly affect the role of the engineer, including management and the law, systems and design, and ethics and politics. He also discusses his contribution and the wider aspects to some of the major projects of the twentieth century such as the Channel Tunnel. Civil Engineering in Context provides an enlightening insight into the civil engineer and civil engineering through the eyes of one of it most eminent protagonists.

Book Good Guys Wiseguys and Putting Up Buildings

Download or read book Good Guys Wiseguys and Putting Up Buildings written by Samuel C. Florman and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Guys, Wiseguys, and Putting Up Buildings is an engaging memoir about one man's career in construction--rising to the top of an industry renowned for crime, corruption, violence, physical danger, and the chronic risk of financial catastrophe. Starting in the Navy Seabees at the end of WWII, Samuel C. Florman made his way as a general contractor in New York City through the period of explosive development, private exuberance and the historic growth of publicly supported housing--all amidst the rise of the notorious Mafia families, and evolution of the Civil Rights Movement. His storied career brought him into contact with a variety of personalities: politicians and civil servants, developers and technocrats, saintly do-gooders and corrupt rapscallions. Along with the rousing adventures there were satisfactions of a different sort: the enchantment of seeing architecture made real; the pride of creating housing, hospitals, schools, places of worship--shelter for the body and nourishment for the spirit.

Book Home and Away

Download or read book Home and Away written by Peter Martin and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-02-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home and Away – A Civil Engineering Odyssey draws on the author’s long career as an engineer responsible for many projects around the world. In the memoir he highlights some of those projects with descriptions of the design processes and the construction methods used to bring the works to successful completion, keeping technical detail to the minimum needed for the reader’s understanding of the projects. Personal reminiscences of his travels complement descriptions of life as an engineer. Developments in analysis of structures during the author’s working life have enabled all manner of structures to be designed to display elegance of form in a natural way without unnecessary embellishment. Practising engineers understand the satisfaction to be found in designing such engineering works and seeing them built as they envisaged. It is hoped the author’s enthusiasm for his work as expressed in the memoir may inspire others to become the civil engineers of the future.
