Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A solitary spy slips into Turkey during World War I, to tangle with the German apparatus and find his brother’s killer. It is 1917 and the Great War has been raging for three long years. Mycroft Holmes grows suspicious of one of his agents in Constantinople. Naturally, he wants to send a man to investigate who knows the language, the people and has an exemplary war record, including fourteen months posing as a German officer in Berlin. But Sherlock Holmes proves to be, for once, stubbornly unwilling to fulfill his older brother’s request. When Mycroft is shot and left for dead, Holmes is forced to Constantinople to uncover the man behind the deed. Unfortunately, before he was assaulted Mycroft failed to communicate which agent was the turncoat. So begins Holmes’ reluctant return to the Near East. Not only does the adventure provoke a bagful of memories both bitter and sweet but the hunt for the agent who betrayed them unravels with breath-robbing surprises that even Holmes with all his skills could never have anticipated. The Case of the Reluctant Agent is Book 2 of the Sherlock Holmes Series: 1.0 Chronicles of the Lost Years 2.0 The Case of the Reluctant Agent 2.5 Sherlock Boxed In (Series Boxed Set) The series contains continuing characters and storylines and is best read in order. A Romantic Sherlock Holmes Novel ___ Praise for The Case of the Reluctant Agent I am very impressed with her ability to write Sherlock Holmes close enough to the originals even Conan Doyle would have a hard time telling them apart. She is clever in her plot twists, true to Holmes in his logic and detailed thinking but she has also managed to give him a little bit of emotion that the originals lacked. Cocktails and Books

Book The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Download or read book The Reluctant Fundamentalist written by Mohsin Hamid and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the award-winning Moth Smoke comes a perspective on love, prejudice, and the war on terror that has never been seen in North American literature. At a café table in Lahore, a bearded Pakistani man converses with a suspicious, and possibly armed, American stranger. As dusk deepens to night, he begins the tale that has brought them to this fateful meeting. . . Changez is living an immigrant’s dream of America. At the top of his class at Princeton, he is snapped up by Underwood Samson, an elite firm that specializes in the “valuation” of companies ripe for acquisition. He thrives on the energy of New York and the intensity of his work, and his infatuation with regal Erica promises entrée into Manhattan society at the same exalted level once occupied by his own family back in Lahore. For a time, it seems as though nothing will stand in the way of Changez’s meteoric rise to personal and professional success. But in the wake of September 11, he finds his position in his adopted city suddenly overturned, and his budding relationship with Erica eclipsed by the reawakened ghosts of her past. And Changez’s own identity is in seismic shift as well, unearthing allegiances more fundamental than money, power, and perhaps even love. Elegant and compelling, Mohsin Hamid’s second novel is a devastating exploration of our divided and yet ultimately indivisible world. “Excuse me, sir, but may I be of assistance? Ah, I see I have alarmed you. Do not be frightened by my beard: I am a lover of America. I noticed that you were looking for something; more than looking, in fact you seemed to be on a mission, and since I am both a native of this city and a speaker of your language, I thought I might offer you my services as a bridge.” —from The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Book The Reluctant Politician

Download or read book The Reluctant Politician written by Chick Lung and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with the kidnapping of Tony Denton's sixteen year old niece at a car wash and his involvement with the police as they try to locate her. Things start going wrong when police officers are pulled from the kidnapping case to work as decoys on a sting in the red light district, arresting prostitutes and their "johns". Tony losses it as he rants and raves against management of the police force in his hometown. When people tell Tony to stop griping and do something about it he reluctantly runs for sheriff, and to his surprise he wins the office. His only promise on the campaign trail had been that he would not allow any of his officers to be involved in arresting prostitutes or their "johns's", nor would he allow an officer to arrest anyone using drugs, which causes an uproar within the relgious community. Tony is so successful at taking his police officers away from these two areas and putting them to work solving the brutual murders and rapes that take place in his town that within the first two years the number of all major crimes in the town take a major nose dive. Even the papers in larger cities take notice and begin writing accounts of the small town sheriff that has a new method of fighting crimes. Soon Tony is being asked to run for higher office and this starts the remarkable story of the reluctant politician who changes the system, but as is always the case with the old saying, "be careful what you wish for, it might come true", in Tony's case he pulls the nation down a slippery slope faster and faster to destruction.

Book The Reluctant Psychic

Download or read book The Reluctant Psychic written by Suzan Saxman and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all, as children, saw imaginary friends and heard monsters in the closet. But for Suzan Saxman, those friends and monsters didn't go away-and they weren't imaginary. They were the dead who came to her from the time she was a little girl with urgent messages for the living. Raised in a house filled with secrets, she saw and spoke the truth as soon as she could talk, alarming the nuns in her convent school with her revelations and terrifying her own mother with her strange visions. Each night she woke to see a man with no eyes watching her, and each day she kept watch by the window while her father was at work and Steve, her real father, a swarthy drifter, rendezvoused with her mother. It was the 1960s in suburban Staten Island and she tried to hide it all, and be a daughter her mother could love. Always skeptical of her tremendous gift, she struggled to come to terms with her calling even as she revealed the destinies of everyone, from housewives to hit men, stockbrokers to rock-and-rollers. She could witness everyone's future-everyone's but her own. Why was she visited by angels and demons? Could she ever escape this strange fate? Where was her own soul mate? Now Suzan tells the story of her journey and tries to make sense of her family's buried secrets. Through powerful readings of others' destinies interwoven with compelling narrative, a reluctant psychic emerges from the shadows.

Download or read book The Reluctant Spy written by John H. Goodwin and published by Author House. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reluctant Spy is the timely story of Calvin Evan, a smart, but flawed CIA agent, beginning with the 1979 Iranian revolution. Cal develops a critical Iranian operative and becomes embroiled in the audacious, yet little honored effort to liberate the American embassy hostages. Romantically, he’s caught between his love for a rescued refugee and the aggressive intentions of his boss’ manipulative daughter. Ensnaring him, the savvy daughter navigates his career away from the political fallout of the mission’s failure and directs him to the battleground of the 1980’s- the Nicaraguan Contra war where Cal runs an illegal funding operation. Morally conflicted and victimized by his erratic behavior, he slips into a burned out funk, posted to Switzerland. There, amidst the rise of Middle Eastern terrorism, his past pulls him into conflict with his former Iranian asset, possibly a double agent, and reunites him with his long ago betrayed love, now a death squad target. The Reluctant Spy is the tale of Cal’s torment in trying to reconcile his heroic and destructive behaviors, his successes and failures, and his search for happiness and contentment. The backdrop of his struggles is the American foreign policy establishment’s often futile efforts to influence and control global events while carrying on insidious bureaucratic warfare. John H. Goodwin is a 1981 graduate of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, Magna Cum Laude. John used his experience living abroad and knowledge of foreign cultures and American political and military affairs history in writing The Reluctant Spy. John manages global investment portfolios for wealthy American and international families at Morgan Stanley’s Private Wealth Management business.

Book The Reluctant Spy

Download or read book The Reluctant Spy written by John Kiriakou and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the waterboarding controversy exploded in the media, one CIA agent had already gone public. In a groundbreaking 2007 interview with ABC News, John Kiriakou called waterboarding torture—but admitted that it probably worked. This book, at once a confessional, an adventure story, and a chronicle of Kiriakou’s life in the CIA, stands as an important, eloquent piece of testimony from a committed American patriot. In February 2002 Kiriakou was the head of counterterrorism in Pakistan. Under his command, in a spectacular raid coordinated with Pakistani agents and the CIA’s best intelligence analyst, Kiriakou’s field officers took down the infamous terrorist Abu Zubaydah. For days, Kiriakou became the wounded terrorist’s personal “bodyguard.” In circumstances stranger than fiction, as al-Qaeda agents scoured the streets for their captured leader, the best trauma surgeon in America was flown to Pakistan to make sure that Zubaydah did not die. In The Reluctant Spy, Kiriakou takes us into the fight against an enemy fueled by fanaticism. He chillingly describes what it was like inside the CIA headquarters on the morning of 9/11, the agency leaders who stepped up and those who protected their careers. And in what may be the book’s most shocking revelation, he describes how the White House made plans to invade Iraq a full year before the CIA knew about it—or could attempt to stop it. Chronicling both mind-boggling mistakes and heroic acts of individual courage, The Reluctant Spy is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the inner workings of the U.S. intelligence apparatus, the truth behind the torture debate, and the incredible dedication of ordinary men and women doing one of the most extraordinary jobs on earth.
