Book The Religious Quest of India Hindu Ethics

Download or read book The Religious Quest of India Hindu Ethics written by John McKenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Quest of India, Hindu Ethics: A Historical and Critical Essay The subject of Hindu Ethics is one which in its whole range has not so far been submitted to scientific investigation, though many writers have dealt with aspects of Hindu ethical teaching, and studies of Hindu religion have generally involved some consideration of the bearings of religious doctrine on the moral life. The attempt is here made to fix attention more definitely on the ethical side of Hindu teaching. The aim of the writer has been to present the subject in a way that will make it intelligible to the ordinary educated reader, particularly to the educated Indian. He has sought at the same time, however, to maintain scientific accuracy in his discussion, and he hopes that he may have been able to contribute something to the study of a subject which he cannot but believe to be of the highest importance scientifically and practically. He believes, on the one hand, that some knowledge of Hindu thought should be of the greatest value to the Western student of ethics, for he has the feeling that Western ethical thinking has suffered from a certain insularity, which acquaintance with other systems of thought and life should help to remove. On the other hand, he believes that it is important that thoughtful Hindus should have their attention directed to the principles on which their practical life is based. He does not expect that all will agree with him in the conclusions to which he has been led, but he will have achieved something if he is able to lead some to examine for themselves the great questions on which he has touched. Book excerpt: Modern Western approaches to India often have focused on metaphysics at the expense of ethics, leading many to see Hinduism as only concerned with the esoteric and the otherworldly. The chapters of this book offer case study explorations that are selected and presented to invite comparisons with the modern West. Such comparisons will help to remove the apparent otherworldly nature of Hindu thought from the minds of Western readers, as well as give depth and new significance to Indian ideas in the areas of medical ethics, social ethics, and human rights. The case studies demonstrate that Indian thought has not ignored deep reflection on ethical problems that are presenting serious challenges to the modern world. They demonstrate that Hinduism has a firm grounding in ethics, even when the most difficult questions are raised.

Download or read book Comparative Ethics in Hindu and Buddhist Traditions written by Roderick Hindery and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1978 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exploratory volume in the new field of comparative ethics serves the diverse goals of groups variously interested in International law and morality, in comparative religious ethical ideals, or simply in cross-cultural literature and drama. The author draws moral ideals from primary Hindu sources--popular and formal, literary and spiritual. The same method is applied for Buddhist moral texts. Introducing method in comparative ethics with a synopsis of Hindu mystical tradition, the author diiscusses in detail ethics in the Rgveda, Upaniisads, Laws of Manu, Ramayana, Gita, other popular classics, poetry, drama, philosophers, and reformers. After summarizing pluralism in Hindu ethiics, the author sketches ethical thought in Mahayana Buddhiist texts. The book contains elaborate notes, two appendices, critical textual matter, a diagram of topical parallels, a bibliography, and an index.
