Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Religion: Or Faith as a Part of a Complete Cosmic System HE doctrine Of evolution is so recent a T conception, especially in its bearing on spiritual things, that we are able as yet neither to define it well within itself, nor to see its implications when taken in connection with our higher life. We do two most un desirable things: we make the notion so in flexible as to strangle Our intellectual powers, and we struggle with the theory itself as some thing which we would gladly escape. We hope to bring some relief at both Of these points; to show that evolution is not a conception in extinction of reason, nor yet a movement in overthrow Of faith. Our spiritual life is in volved in it and built up by it as its most com prehensive and consummate product. We in no way grasp Our religious beliefs so firmly as when we see that they are woven into the entire web Of events. Canon Bertal Heeney is making a distinct contribution to the religious thought of ur country. Coming as they do at a time when considerable attention is being direc ted in Canada and the United States to the relationship of science to re ligion, these discourses should be a source of great help to those who have had difficulty in finding a solu tion for their religious problems in the light of modern science. This is particularly true of the young stu dent whose religious thinking at first is liable to be upset by the teachings of science. A careful analysis of the subject as given in these discourses impresses the fact that the teach ings oi natural science only tend to strengthen our belief in the fund ameutais of our Christian faith. Although, therefore, a general agreement will be found to exist throughout the series, one or two of the writers have made no secret of their holding a much more limited view of the scope and character of Evolution than that represented by the rest. Should exception be taken to this circumstance, we would respectfully submit, that in the settlement of great vital questions it must tend in a much higher degree to healthy, thorough, and impartial discussion when debaters are left perfectly free in every thing save the essentials of the point at issue. In the hope that the following pages may be found helpful by many whose spirits are shadowed by the scepticism of the age, we now commit them. I., ten years at Hartford, Conn., and four years at Sharon, Mass. In 1904 he built a house at Greenfield, Mass., where he made his home with his daughter and her fam ily until his death on February 16, 1910. Mr. Kimball was a man of a wide range of reading, thorough, exact and untiring. He was sometimes truer to his convictions than to his convenience and preferred the approval of his own conscience to the applause of the multi tude. He was accustomed to speak his mind with great freedom not only upon the philo sophical and religious beliefs which he cher ished, but also upon the vexing social problems of his generation. He was upright and down right, courageous and persistent. He was also remarkably productive, for in spite of his busy life of study and of pastoral service he wrote unceasingly upon the subjects and in behalf of the causes which enlisted his enthusiasm. A graphic article of his appeared in the Spring field Republican on the day before his death, and another in the Christian Register on the day after his death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Religion The demand for a second edition of this little book within a year is most gratifying, for it would seem to indicate that, in a measure at least, it has fulfilled the purpose for which it was written, namely, to show briefly and in such a way as to appeal to the man of the street that religion is a natural and necessary product of human evolution and not a supernatural revela tion; to show that true religion is ethics, not theology. If these pages help to attain this end the effort was well worth while, for to do this is to have a part in the evolution of the Religion of the Future, Which will mould the people of the future even as religions of the past have moulded the people of the past. While nothing has here been presented that is 'hew to scholars, for the convenience of those who may wish to verify the truths herein set forth or who may wish for further information on these great subjects, the following literature is especially recommended. Attempt to keep the new wine in the old bottles? That can only end in destroying the bottles and spilling the wine. Attempt to stop the fermentation? Impossible And if possible, the only result would be to spoil the wine. No! Put the new wine into new bottles, that both may be preserved. Spir itual experience is always new. It must there fore find a new expression in each age. This book is an attempt to restate the eternal yet ever new truths of the religious life in the terms of modern phiiosophic thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Religion: A Parent's Talks With His, Children Concerning the Moral Side of Evolution And God said: Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures and let fowl fly above the earth n the face of the expanse of the heaven. - Here, too, th most pronounced, advanced evolutionist recognizes the truth of simple statement. The normal conditions of space are not only darkness and cold, but apparently death. Life projected into the purely negative condition of non-life is as positive a phenomenon as light projected into darkness, or heat into cold. Whence that life came, again we cannot absolutely say. And God said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the cattle and over all the earth. This would appear to be an admirably simple and compact statement of the crown ing positive phenomenon of creation, when interpreted in its true evolutionary sense of a gradual development. Man, who is to have dominion over all the earth, emerges first upon the scene. He is to have dominion, not only over all the other forms of animal life, but over the earth itself, with its hidden wealth, its as yet unfolded mysterious forces, which are to be subjugated to his will and become his obedient servants. He is to discover and control the positive phenomena of light. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Notes on Evolution and Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Evolution and Christianity Classic Reprint written by J. F. Yorke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Evolution and Christianity The object of the following simple Notes is to turn a small - but, it is hoped, not inopportune - stream of facts and criticism on to an important question: Is there in the teaching of Christ an originality so wonderful, as to be accounted for only by the assumption of a special Divine Revelation? The facts alluded to, whether historical or scientific, are recorded, for the most part, in writings too elaborate or too learned for the busy majority. Yet the consciousness that new knowledge is threatening with dissolution old views of religion and ethics is wide and deep; and not less so is the desire to get at the gist of the controversy, and to learn what - concerning this question above all others - the new knowledge really has to teach. These Notes then are an attempt to meet that desire, and to point out the bearing of Evolution upon Religion, and especially upon Christianity. It is well to know in what direction we arc moving. Book The Natural Theology of Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural Theology of Evolution Classic Reprint written by J. N. Shearman and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Re-Creation: A New Aspect of Evolution But what has caused the succeeding ages to bring forth higher forms of life i he enquires. Oh, Natural Selection, comes the answer again, as ready as it is hopelessly erroneous. And so religious questions of vital importance constantly asked of evolution, are answered in a way which is dangerously misleading, and largely responsible for one of the most terrible curses Of our era, -namely, an utter indifference to religion, and a negative attitude to everything spiritual. Wherever a knowledge of evolution has produced this result, it means that the real nature Of the process has never been perceived. Book Evolution and Christian Faith

Download or read book Evolution and Christian Faith written by Joan Roughgarden and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Click here to visit evolutionandchristianfaith.org "I'm an evolutionary biologist and a Christian," states Stanford professor Joan Roughgarden at the outset of her groundbreaking new book, Evolution and Christian Faith: Reflections of an Evolutionary Biologist. From that perspective, she offers an elegant, deeply satisfying reconciliation of the theory of evolution and the wisdom of the Bible. Perhaps only someone with Roughgarden's unique academic standing could examine so well controversial issues such as the teaching of intelligent design in public schools, or the potential flaws in Darwin's theory of evolution. Certainly Roughgarden is uniquely suited to reference both the minutiae of scientific processes and the implication of Biblical verses. Whether the topic is mutation rates and lizards or the hidden meanings behind St. Paul's letters, Evolution and Christian Faith distils complex arguments into everyday understanding. Roughgarden has scoured the Bible and scanned the natural world, finding examples time and again, not of conflict, but of harmony. The result is an accessible and intelligent context for a Christian vision of the world that embraces science. In the ongoing debates over creationism and evolution, Evolution and Christian Faith will be seen as a work of major significance, written for contemporary readers who wonder how-or if-they can embrace scientific advances while maintaining their traditional values.
