Book The Religiosity of Running

Download or read book The Religiosity of Running written by Mark Mullane and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1976 sportswriter Frank Deford coined the term “Sportianity” to define the devotion found in sports and how it had created a new religious phenomenon. The word itself never caught on, but the meaning behind it stuck. Many authors from a variety of disciplines have contested that sports themselves should be considered a secular religion. However, most of the discussion has centered around popular team sports like soccer, football, and baseball. This research aims to position the sport of distance running in this context as well. This research will focus on a cross-cultural representation of the sport and its place in human society. Running will be examined across the globe, using such locations as Japan, East Africa, and North America to give a comprehensive understanding of how different cultures practiced and continue to embrace this sport with its variety of beliefs, rituals, and communities. Through this understanding of religion, it can be concluded that the sport of long distance running demonstrates the qualities of a secular religion, and should be considered as one."-Abstract
