Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doctrine of the Incarnation, that Jesus Christ was both truly God and truly human, is the foundation and cornerstone of traditional Christian theism. And yet, this traditional teaching appears to verge on incoherence. How can one person be both God, having all the perfections of divinity, and human, having all the limitations of humanity? This is the fundamental philosophical problem of the incarnation. Perhaps a solution is found in an analysis of what the traditional teaching meant by person, divinity, and humanity, or in understanding how divinity and humanity were united in a single person? This Element presents that traditional teaching, then returns to the incoherence problem to showcase various solutions that have been offered to it.

Book The Religion of the Incarnation

Download or read book The Religion of the Incarnation written by Eugene Russell Hendrix and published by . This book was released on 1903 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religion of the Incarnation is the religion of Humanity, for religion is bringing to its utmost best the best that is in us. A clearer vision of what Christ is can alone give us the needed vision of man as God intends him to be. "Because as He is, even so are we in this world." (I John 4:7). Less than a divine Christ means less than a redeemed race. Only the Saviour of men can become their Exemplar. To this end was the Son of God manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil. Without that manifestation or incarnation, both true religion and true ethics were impossible. - Foreword

Book A Kryptic Model of the Incarnation

Download or read book A Kryptic Model of the Incarnation written by Dr Andrew Loke and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-12-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Incarnation, traditionally understood as the metaphysical union between true divinity and true humanity in the one person of Jesus Christ, is one of the central doctrines for Christians over the centuries. Nevertheless, many scholars have objected that the Scriptural account of the Incarnation is incoherent. Being divine seems to entail being omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, but the New Testament portrays Jesus as having human properties such as being apparently limited in knowledge, power, and presence. It seems logically impossible that any single individual could possess such mutually exclusive sets of properties, and this leads to scepticism concerning the occurrence of the Incarnation in history. A Kryptic Model of the Incarnation aims to provide a critical reflection of various attempts to answer these challenges and to offer a compelling response integrating aspects from analytic philosophy of religion, systematic theology, and historical-critical studies. Loke develops a new Kryptic model of the Incarnation, drawing from the Greek word Krypsis meaning ‘hiding’, and proposing that in a certain sense Christ’s supernatural properties were concealed during the Incarnation.

Book The Incarnation and the Church s Witness

Download or read book The Incarnation and the Church s Witness written by Darrell L. Guder and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-09-28 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years, argues Guder, contemporary Christian churches have often thought of their mission efforts as simply one more program of the church. In addition, outsiders have rightly criticized Christian mission efforts as exercises in cultural imperialism. In this provocative book, Guder argues that the incarnation of God in Jesus provides the foundational model for the practice of Christian missions in the world today. The incarnation is the culmination of God's activity and presence in the world, says Guder, for in this event God initiates the healing of a broken world. Using literary, historical, and social approaches to scripture, Guder claims the contemporary church should return to an Òincarnational missionÓ in which the practice of Christian witness is Òshaped by the life, ministry, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.Ó

Book God Becoming Human

    Book Details:
  • Author : Reinhard Feldmeier
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 9781481313872
  • Pages : 460 pages

Download or read book God Becoming Human written by Reinhard Feldmeier and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incarnation--the act of God assuming mortal flesh through Jesus Christ--reveals God's radical love for a world marked by the rebellion of the created against their creator. God becomes human to create life and restore the disrupted divine-human relationship. This doctrine is thus the theme of the Christian faith par excellence. However, the incarnation does not begin with its ultimate realization in Jesus Christ; that single event is preceded by a long history of a God who continually reunites with his people to lead them from death to life, from bondage to freedom. God Becoming Human pursues the astonishing arc of the incarnation, chronicling the varying ways Scripture recounts the divide between God and the creatures of his likeness as well as the diverse expressions the text gives regarding the desire for reconciliation. As the expectations of an existing intermediary that can somehow bridge this gap between God and humans dwindle throughout the Old Testament, hope is increasingly placed on new forms of closeness to God. The closeness made possible by Jesus Christ receives a wide range of interpretations by New Testament witnesses and is continued by a rich chorus that culminates in the early church with the theology of the incarnation. Reinhard Feldmeier and Hermann Spieckermann invite readers to see that the doctrine of the incarnation, the pinnacle of the scriptural saga of redemption, reveals that God's ultimate purpose in dealing with creation was to become human. As narrated in the story of the fall, if paradise was lost because humanity wanted to emulate God, the one reconciled with God through Christ is now given the opportunity--and challenge--to become a child of God. In accordance with the One who descended from the heavenly throne, one must precisely lower oneself and thus fully embrace one's created humanness. It is through the flesh that the created and their creator are joined; there is no other path to unity.

Book The Incarnation of Freedom and Love

Download or read book The Incarnation of Freedom and Love written by Ruth Page and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1991 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it possible to write a Christology when so much is-in question: the traditional structure of Christian doctrine, the difficulties in establishing what can be known about Jesus of Nazareth, and the growing awareness of the validity of non-Christian religions as ways towards God? In this important new book, Ruth Page takes up the challenge, and in facing the problems squarely has produced a compelling and forward-looking answer. Central to her approach is a stress on the God who becomes incarnate, the God of freedom and love. Since freedom and love are God's nature, they will also determine the circumstances of incarnation and how it is perceived. Jesus is to be sought imaginatively, presenting salvation in dramatic form. The history of Jesus contributes to the identity of Jesus Christ, through whose action the nature of redemption becomes visible and effective. To illustrate her central thesis, Ruth Page not only refers to the Gospels and Christian tradition, but draws on poetry and drama, experience and evidence from the realities of our modern world. With her we learn to read an over-familiar story of the Christ in a new light, and at the same time to apply new insights to our own time, its faiths and its despairs. Ruth Page was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Divinity in the University of Edinburgh.
