Book The Religion of Old Glory Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Old Glory "This flag, which we honour and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation." "It speaks to us of the past." "It has witnessed a great history." With these words of our President no one surely can differ. The flag is associated with whatever patriotic ideal we do each one of us recognise, or unwittingly worship; and it recalls to the thoughtful, by its most casual use, the entire spiritual life in all its variety, the solidarity of consciousness and conscience, sheer passion and action of preceding generations since the flag's official adoption June 14th, 1777. With our Whig revolution it had nought whatever to do. With our colonial pre-existence, it is only related by antecedents more or less akin to it. Book excerpt: 'Jonathan Raban is one of the world's greatest living travel writers.' William Dalrymple 'The best book of travel ever written by an Englishman about the United States' Jan Morris, Independent Navigating the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans, Raban opens himself to experience the river in all her turbulent and unpredictable old glory. Going wherever the current takes him, he joins a coon-hunt in Savana, falls for a girl in St Louis, worships with black Baptists in Memphis, hangs out with the housewives of Pemiscot and the hog-king of Dubuque. Through tears of laughter, we are led into the heartland of America - with its hunger and hospitality, its inventive energy and its charming lethargy - and come to know something of its soul. The journey is as much the story of Raban as it is of the Mississippi. Navigating the dangerous, ever-changing waters in an unsuitably fragile aluminium skiff, he immerses himself with an irresistible emotional intensity as he tries to give shape to the river and the story - finding himself by turns vulnerable, curious, angry and, like all of us, sometimes foolishly in love.

Book excerpt: Responses to flag burning as a particular form of street protest tend to polarize into two camps: one holding the view that action of this sort is constitutionally protected protest; the other, that it is subversive and criminal activity. In this well-researched and richly documented volume, Welch examines the collision of these ideologies, and shows the relevance of sociological concepts to a deeper understanding of such forms of protest. In exploring social control of political protest in the United States, this volume embarks on an in-depth examination of flag desecration and efforts to criminalize that particular form of dissent. It seeks to examine the sociological process facilitating the criminalization of protest by attending to moral enterprises, civil religion, authoritarian aesthetics, and the ironic nature of social control. Flag burning is a potent symbolic gesture conveying sharp criticism of the state. Many American believe that flag desecration emerged initially during the Vietnam War era, but the history of this caustic form of protest can be traced to the period leading up to the Civil War. The act of torching Old Glory differs qualitatively from other forms of defiance. With this distinction in mind, attempts to penalize and deter flag desecration transcend the utilitarian function of regulating public protest. Despite popular claims that American society is built on genuine consensus, the flag-burning controversy brings to light the contentious nature of U.S. democracy and its ambivalence toward free expression. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is often viewed as one of the more unpopular additions to the Bill of Rights. One constitutional commentator underscores this point by noting that the First Amendment gives citizens the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. Flag Burning is a well-written, informative volume suitable for courses in deviance, social problems, social movements, mass communication, criminology, and political science, as well as in sociology of law and legal studies.

Book excerpt: Sometime ago, while going through a little blue shoebox, left by my Grandmother Molly N. (Morgan) Chaney, I found a tract from the 1950s. Having read the bulletin sometime in the distant past, at the time it did not seem to be as important to me. At the top of the pamphlet on the front was a handwritten note, which read: This was written by a friend of ours. A wonderful man. He died last summer. The handwritten note was either from my Great-Uncle Jim Morgan or his wife, Great-Aunt Gladys. I know from another letter in his last years, she was writing for him as he dictated. Anyway, the tract is something special to me. Reading it now, I at once think about all the protesting, riots, and violence in the summer of 2020. It also caused me to think about the athletes kneeling during the National Anthem. Inside this booklet you'll find the text of the tract, Old Glory, written by E. K. Bailey of Seattle Washington expressing beautiful sentiments about our flag and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The tract tells a story about the compelling symbolism of our great country's flag, the Stars and Stripes. The story runs counter to many beliefs today which try to eliminate Christianity, Patriotism, and the principles and freedoms provided by the Declaration of Independence and Constitution with its Amendments. You will also find a few of the author's personal musings about patriotism, the current attacks against the founding principles of our great country, and the full text of the Star-Spangled Banner. This booklet is free to download and distribute in it's original form with no changes. For those patriots and Christians who would like, Hardback and Paperback versions are available for keepsakes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is being done in worship when national holidays are celebrated, the American flag is displayed and honored, and songs are sung that extol the nation? Are these benign gestures? Or could they actually be idolatrous? In this insightful and persuasively argued study Craig M. Watts contends the inclusion of elements of American nationalism in worship is detrimental to the integrity of Christian worship. He maintains that in faithful worship the story of Jesus must be re-presented and performed in such a way that the only affections and loyalty that are fostered are those Christians everywhere rightfully share. To do otherwise opens the door to idolatry and leaves the church doing what Watts calls "bowing toward Babylon." He reviews the development of the symbols, songs, and gestures that celebrate America and how they were introduced into worship. Watts concludes that the spirituality of American Christian nationalism does not complement the faith of the church but distorts it, hindering global Christian unity and the peaceable witness of the church in a divided world.
