Book excerpt: How does healing fit into God's will, especially when God doesn't heal? Our hearts, our bodies, and our world are desperate for healing. We all experience brokenness, and we rightfully look to Jesus for restoration. But many Christians have been taught the lie that God will heal us if our faith is strong enough, and that he is punishing us when bad things happen. Growing up in one of the world's leading faith-healing dynasties, Costi Hinn witnessed the tragedy of people chasing after healing more than the Healer. In this book he provides biblical clarity to some of the most challenging questions of the Christian faith. Does grace guarantee healing? How do we catch ourselves from slipping into the trap of seeking God for what he can do for us and not for who he really is? Beginning with the vivid memory of the night he discovered his son's cancer diagnosis—Costi unpacks the layered feelings and questions we have about God and his healing power, and he provides practical principles for growing closer to Jesus. With gentle clarity and biblical wisdom, he explains how to: Faithfully pray for healing while trusting in God's sovereignty. Navigate tough conversations about the topics of divine healing, love, and justice. Hold on to faith even in the most painful trials. More than chasing after the Jesus we want, this hopeful and encouraging book will guide you to discovering the Jesus we truly need—and the true power and hope that comes from a genuine relationship with him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expert guidance on how to grow up in Christ This book is a follow-up to Thomas Bergler’s acclaimed work The Juvenilization of American Christianity, which documents how church youth ministries over the past several decades have contributed to a process of adolescent spiritual traits becoming accepted and even celebrated by Christians of all ages. This “juvenilization” in the church is a real problem that must be addressed, says Bergler, and in his new book he addresses it head-on. Bergler’s From Here to Maturity is an accessible guide for helping both individuals and whole faith communities to grow spiritually. Bergler claims that spiritual maturity -- defined as “basic competence in the Christian life” -- is both desirable and attainable, and he effectively presents a biblical theology of spiritual maturity, identifying its traits from pertinent New Testament passages. Adapting Dallas Willard’s model of spiritual formation and applying it to congregational life, Bergler offers a wealth of practical, research-based guidance as to how Christian leaders can effectively foster spiritual maturity in their congregations. He also identifies six key faith-sustaining factors and provides a system for evaluating a church’s state of spiritual maturity and steps for improving it. Ecumenically friendly, From Here to Maturity will be useful to individuals and leaders from many different churches and theological traditions.

Book Aiming at Maturity

  • Author : Stephen W. Rankin
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

  • ISBN : 1610972465
  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book Aiming at Maturity written by Stephen W. Rankin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that much of American Christianity has lost sight of the goal of growing to maturity in Christ. This loss of vision has had serious consequences for the quality of our witness and ministry. In Aiming at Maturity, Steven W. Rankin seeks to bring back into focus key qualities of spiritual maturity and summarizes important biblical passages to show the scriptural foundations that call for spiritual maturity. Rankin also addresses certain tendencies in popular Christian culture to reduce doctrinal truths to sound bites with the laudable but counterproductive goal to make doctrine memorable, therefore applicable. Thinking more expansively about certain key doctrines related to the work of Christ and the impact of grace contributes to growth toward maturity in a way that popular descriptions of these doctrines do not. Finally, Rankin also challenges readers to consider the important role of emotions in developing Christlike dispositions, which contribute toward producing the fruit of a mature Christian life. By looking at relevant modern research, Aiming at Maturity shows the inherent connection between thoughts and feelings that draw us closer to the actual biblical description of the heart.

Book Much Ado About Something

Download or read book Much Ado About Something written by Larry Culliford and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who, from a scientific perspective, could possibly accept the idea of a virgin birth, or any of Christ's miracles, much less his death and resurrection? Only a child, or a Christian possessed of a considerable degree of discernment. This enthralling book reveals how we may develop from childhood innocence to spiritual maturity, via a series of psychological stages, through constant (but often unconscious) communication with the Holy Spirit. Growth will most often occur through adversity and the emotional healing that accompanies acceptance of God's Will. Such experiences encourage the letting go of juvenile attachments and aversions, so we are free to live with increasing spontaneity 'in the moment' - wiser, and more compassionately attuned to the sufferings of others.

Book Success and the Christian

Download or read book Success and the Christian written by A. W. Tozer and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success and the Christian is a compilation of A.W. Tozer sermons on the subject matter of spiritual maturity—both its cost and criteria for the believer. The overall purpose of this collection is to "promote the personal heart religion"' among God's people, something Tozer consistently emphasized. Knowing God deeply and intimately brings purpose and meaning to life and should be the Christian's highest goal. So what holds us back from authentic spiritual success? A.W. Tozer contends that it is the excess baggage that most Christians carry that prevents them from going further with God. In this insightful and prophetic book, Tozer shows how we can recognize and clear away the stumbling blocks that keep us from a dynamic relationship with our Savior.

Book The Juvenilization of American Christianity

Download or read book The Juvenilization of American Christianity written by Thomas Bergler and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-20 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pop worship music. Falling in love with Jesus. Mission trips. Wearing jeans and T-shirts to church. Spiritual searching and church hopping. Faith-based political activism. Seeker-sensitive outreach. These now-commonplace elements of American church life all began as innovative ways to reach young people, yet they have gradually become accepted as important parts of a spiritual ideal for all ages. What on earth has happened? In The Juvenilization of American Christianity Thomas Bergler traces the way in which, over seventy-five years, youth ministries have breathed new vitality into four major American church traditions -- African American, Evangelical, Mainline Protestant, and Roman Catholic. Bergler shows too how this "juvenilization" of churches has led to widespread spiritual immaturity, consumerism, and self-centeredness, popularizing a feel-good faith with neither intergenerational community nor theological literacy. Bergler s critique further offers constructive suggestions for taming juvenilization. Watch the trailer:

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God has instructed me to share with you how to become spiritually mature. We will look at five elements that must be present in the Christian's life in order to become a mature believer. First, we are called to live a life of faith, pleasing God. We are also called to expect God to come through and deliver what we believe Him for; we must have hope, a confident expectation in God. In addition to this, we must have agape love to go along with our faith and hope. Equally important, we are called to have patience and to be steadfast and secure until we receive the manifestation of our answer to prayer. Finally, we must have God's wisdom to know how to proceed in faith, hope, love, and patience. This book will take you through the believer's need for faith, hope, love, patience, and wisdom.

Book Means to Christian Maturity Revisited

Download or read book Means to Christian Maturity Revisited written by Ray Van Tassell, Jr. and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how we reach maturity. What we must go through to get there. What is maturity for a Christian? This writing is revealing many issues concerning our walk with the Lord as we grow into His image through trials and tribulations mostly brought on ourselves by our own ignorance of our Father's word. Hosea 4:6 tells us why we are in many of the straights we get ourselves into: "My people are DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE: because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to Me: seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children." Tough words, but we His called out ones must repent and learn His word so Psalm 119:105 is alive to us: "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path." Without knowledge of His word or covenant, we are being destroyed by the enemy through our own laziness and ignorance of the blood shed by Yeshua Messiah who was sent to the cross for our deliverance from Satan's yoke. God the Father through His Son has completed all the work for us, all we, His people must do is believe it, and walk in this completed work. Sin in our life produces sickness, disease and death if we do not repent. It is time for the truly repentant church (us) to grow up and learn of His higher ways and walk in agreement with the Most High as Enoch did in the Old Covenant. Revelation 19:7 tells us: "Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come and His wife has made herself ready." He then will return, NOT UNTIL!

Book excerpt: If someone were to approach me and ask, "Pastor, what is the most important thing the church is lacking today"? My response to the question would be "Maturity." Oftentimes when faced with a problem, as individuals or as a church, we respond ineffectively or inappropriately because we have not properly transitioned through the steps of maturity as set forth in the Scriptures to where we respond as spiritual adults rather than immature children. A child responds according to his or her personal wants and needs, whereas a mature adult responds from the perspective of the needs of other people. So, until we have properly transitioned through the steps of maturity, until we have moved from a place where we view situations only from a selfish perspective to where we view them from an unselfish one, focusing on the needs of other people, we are incapable of responding to other people as God would have us to respond. In the Scriptures, God sets forth four basic steps to maturity: 1) Childhood, 2) Sonship, 3) Husbandship, and 4) Fatherhood.
