Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Interwoven Lives: Adolescent Mothers and Their Children (2001) described, in detail, the development of these adolescent mothers and their children across the first eight years of life. Major delays were first noticed in children's patterns of attachment at age 1 and their IQ and personal adjustment scores at age 3. By age 8, school-related problems were found in 70% of the children. With these data as the backdrop, this companion volume, Risk and Resilience, identifies major risk factors associated with long-term developmental delays as well as the processes that led to resilience in some of the mothers and children. This new volume traces the children's development at ages 8, 10, and 14. The editors focus on identifying risk and protective factors associated with important life course trajectories as the mothers entered early adulthood and their children became adolescents. Relatively unexplored protective factors - such as religiosity, patterns of father involvement, and romantic relationships - were found to positively influence development for both teenage mothers and their children. This new text also addresses: New methodological approaches with an emphasis on the use of hierarchical linear and structural equation modeling and dynamical systems analyses Implications for prevention and intervention programs Intellectual, educational, and socioemotional outcome data The "dark side" of rearing children in poverty The multiple risks related to adolescent parenting and their profound impact on children's development How resilience emerges in children's lives and the specific factors that promote it. Risk and Resilience appeals to researchers in developmental psychology and family processes as well as agency and government professionals charged with public policy and service delivery.

Book excerpt: This research investigated the sources of support adolescent mothers have in their lives as well as what types of support these persons give and how often support is provided by them. In addition, the quality of the relationship and its relation to the amount of the types of support provided and the frequency of support provided was examined. Support that is given to adolescent mothers from formal services was also considered. The relationship between the involvement of family and significant others in services and service quality was investigated, and if services were inviting these persons to programming events held. It was found that relationship quality with support sources was related to the number of types of support these persons provided, but no relationship was found between relationship quality and the frequency of support given. The number of formal services that do invite and do not invite family and significant others to programming activities was almost equal, with slightly more not inviting these persons. There was a relationship between lower service quality and a higher frequency of not including the family components investigated in the study.

Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

In this contribution to the literature on adolescent social support networks, Kandi Stinson conducts thirty in-depth interviews with adolescents and their custodial parents. She divides her interviews evenly between children living with both biological parents, with the divorced mother, and with the divorced mother and stepfather. Do the structure and effectiveness of the adolescents' social support networks vary in these three environments? What are the implications of these variations for adolescent well-being? Focusing on what kinds of networks most adequately meet the needs of adolescents, Stinson concludes that the relationship between adolescent and mother is crucial in determining the size and structure of support networks and that variations in the mother's marital status have a great impact on the number, kinds, and quality of support networks. Stinson's study explores the answers to three guiding questions: What do adolescent support networks look like? How are these networks affected by the divorce or remarriage of parents? What are the impacts of network size and structure on adolescent well-being? Following a review of literature, Stinson describes the size and structural characteristics of networks. She then focuses four chapters on those particular network relationships which emerge as significant sources of support: mother-adolescent, father-adolescent, relationships with relatives, and adolescent friendships. In her final chapter Stinson applies her empirical results to her guiding questions. This study is directed at researchers and practitioners specializing in adolescent well-being, divorce, and remarriage counseling.

They often face higher levels of poverty and lower education levels than other adolescent groups, in addition to experiencing acculturative stressors. Adolescent Latina mothers experience additional stressors related to parenting at a young age. Social support has been shown to reduce risk for psychological distress; however, there are several factors that influence this relation. The association of perceived social support from adolescent mothers' mothers and fathers on psychological distress was examined. Familism, a family-centric Latino value, was examined as a potential moderator in the relation between social support and distress, as adolescents who endorse more familistic values may take advantage of support provided by mothers and fathers better than adolescents who endorse fewer values. Preliminary correlations revealed that support from adolescents' mothers and fathers was associated with lower distress. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that after controlling for adolescent age, financial stress, and negative life events, mother support was no longer associated with lower distress; father support was still associated with lower distress. Additionally, familism did not moderate the relationship between social support and distress for mother or father support. Findings contribute to the body of research on father support, but further research is needed to examine the quality and importance of support providers to determine why there were differences in distress between those perceiving mother and father support.

Qualitative and quantitative analyses are used to explain why some mothers and children fare better than others, showing that the lives and developmental trajectories of adolescent mothers and children are inextricably interwoven and closely linked to the social contexts within which they live. The book closes with social policy implications of the research including recommendations for intervention programs and policies to help adolescent parents and their children achieve developmental success and find happiness.
