Book excerpt: Nursing is a profession dedicated to improving the nation's health, yet poor health and unhealthy lifestyles among nurses may adversely affect their work performance, patient outcomes, and job retention. There is very little research on how health status and healthy lifestyles are viewed in relation to nurses' self-concept. Using Cowin's model of nurse self-concept as a framework, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among dimensions of nurses' health and their perceptions of professional adequacy. The research questions addressed how health status and lifestyle practices were related to nurses' self-concept. This correlation study used a random sample and a survey design. Ninety-four nurses from two Midwestern hospitals elected to participate. Data were collected using the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II), the Nurses' Self-Concept Questionnaire (NSCQ), and a single-item self-rating of health. Simultaneous linear regression showed the independent variables of health status and healthy lifestyles predicted all dimensions of nurse self-concept except staff relations. The combination of health status and spiritual growth predicted every dimension of nurse self-concept and explained more of the variance. This study concluded efforts to improve the health and lifestyles of these nurses would also result in improvements in their perceptions of professional adequacy. Social change implications of this study may include a better understanding of how health and lifestyles impact a nurse's self-concept that may be used to promote a healthier nursing workforce which, in turn, provides more effective patient care and health promotion and remains longer in the profession.

A nation cannot fully thrive until everyone - no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they make - can live their healthiest possible life, and helping people live their healthiest life is and has always been the essential role of nurses. Nurses have a critical role to play in achieving the goal of health equity, but they need robust education, supportive work environments, and autonomy. Accordingly, at the request of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, on behalf of the National Academy of Medicine, an ad hoc committee under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conducted a study aimed at envisioning and charting a path forward for the nursing profession to help reduce inequities in people's ability to achieve their full health potential. The ultimate goal is the achievement of health equity in the United States built on strengthened nursing capacity and expertise. By leveraging these attributes, nursing will help to create and contribute comprehensively to equitable public health and health care systems that are designed to work for everyone. The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity explores how nurses can work to reduce health disparities and promote equity, while keeping costs at bay, utilizing technology, and maintaining patient and family-focused care into 2030. This work builds on the foundation set out by The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011) report.

A number of studies also show nurses are prone to poor health status and unhealthy lifestyles. Objectives: This study aims to identify the relationships between socio-demographic profile, self-rated health, mental well-being, and health-promoting lifestyles among staff nurses working in public and private tertiary hopsitals in the city of Manila. Method: The study utilized correlational design using questionnaires which include Socio-demographic Profile with single self-rating of health, Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) and Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Data from the two hundred nine staff nurses (n=209) were analyzed though descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling. Results: This study indicated that most of the nurses rated their health as good (M = 3.91, SD = 1.02) and had a higher level of mental well-being (M = 3.97, SD = .51). When the mean outcomes of the HPLP II were examined, spiritual growth (3.06) scored highest followed by interpersonal relations (2.97), stress management 92.65), health responsibility (2.63), nutrition (2.55), and physical activity (2.34) with the lowest score. Results of the study also revealed high significant relationships between nurses' socio-demographic profile, self-rated health, mental well-being, and health-promoting lifestyles. Conclusions: Though these findings should only be generalized to the staff nurses in this study, the results suggest that nurses with good self-rated health and higher mental well-being opted to perfrom health-promoting lifestyles. A need to strengthen the promotioon of healthier nurses as primary promoters of health is essnential for them to become productive and effective members of the health care team.
