Book The Relationship of Perceived Autonomy supportive Coaching Behavior with Motivation Among High School Athletes

Download or read book The Relationship of Perceived Autonomy supportive Coaching Behavior with Motivation Among High School Athletes written by Chelsea J. Burrell and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Recent literature suggests that coaches play a significant role in creating a climate that fosters self-determined motivation among athletes. Coaching style influences athlete perception, motivation, and performance. Research supports that an autonomy-supportive coaching style is an effective motivational tool for coaches, whereas a controlling coaching style is ineffective. Previous research has shown that an autonomy-supportive interpersonal style increases self-determined motivation among athletes. However, previous research typically includes only one interpersonal coaching style. In addition, there is minimal research looking at needs satisfaction mediating the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation through the SDT continuum. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with high school athletes' motivation as well as needs satisfaction. High school athletes from the Western region of North Carolina (n=162) completed the Coach Behavior Scale in Sport, Controlling Coach Behavior Scale, Behavior Regulation in Sport Questionnaire, and the Basic Needs Satisfaction Sport Scale. Correlations and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze relationships among coaching behaviors, needs satisfaction, and motivation. The hypotheses were 1) autonomy-supportive coaching behavior is positively related to higher forms of self-determined motivation and needs satisfaction, 2) controlling coaching behavior is negatively related to self-determined forms of motivation and needs satisfaction, and3) needs satisfaction mediates the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation. As predicted, autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with higher forms of self-determined motivation (intrinsic: r=.463; integrated: r=.512; and identified: r=.558), whereas controlling coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with more extrinsic forms of motivation (external: r=.411 and amotivation: r=.279). Autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively correlated with all three needs (competence: r=.479, autonomy: r=.583, and relatedness: r=.582), and in turn, the three needs positively predicted higher forms of self-determined motivation. Multiple regression results indicate that the relationships of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with motivation are partially mediated by perceived needs satisfaction, but the relationships differed for different forms of motivation. Evidence for mediation was strongest for intrinsic motivation, and for integrated motivation and identified motivation, autonomous coach behavior added to the prediction suggesting the relationship was not fully mediated by needs satisfaction. For external regulation, controlling coaching behavior was a strong direct predictor with no evidence of mediation. The results indicate that autonomy-supportive coaching behavior predicts need satisfaction and enhances athlete motivation whereas controlling coaching behavior reduces self-determined motivation. Therefore, coaches are advised to use strategies that promote autonomy, such as providing options, giving athletes opportunities to make decisions, and allowing athletes to feel involved."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book The Perceived Effectiveness of Autonomy supportive and Controlling Coaching Styles

Download or read book The Perceived Effectiveness of Autonomy supportive and Controlling Coaching Styles written by Kayla Love and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine how collegiate athletes perceive their coach's behaviors and if there are differences in the perceived effectiveness of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching styles. Method: A cluster analysis was conducted among collegiate athletes (N = 306) from the Midwest portion of the United States. The athletes were given questionnaires to report on perceived autonomy-support and control exhibited by their coach, as well as the perceived effectiveness of their coach in terms of confidence in their coach. Results: Preliminary analyses found that autonomy support was positively related to confidence in the coach, whereas controlling behaviors were negatively related to confidence in the coach. The relationship between autonomy support and confidence in the coach was particularly strong (r=.79). In the main analysis, seven profiles representing athletes that perceived various combinations of low, high, and moderate levels of autonomy-supportive and controlling behaviors were found. Results also revealed that the confidence the athletes had in their coach tended to decline across profiles as the degree of perceived autonomy support declined. Conclusion: Experiencing higher levels of autonomy-supportive behavior leads athletes to be more confident in their coach. Coaches that are perceived to be high in autonomy-supportive behavior and low in controlling behavior are the most effective in coaching. The least effective coaches are those coaches who are perceived as low in autonomy-supportive behaviors and high in controlling behaviors. The present findings are most useful for coaches and athletic departments.

Book The Effects of Autonomy Supportive Coaching Behaviors and Season Success on Coach Perception

Download or read book The Effects of Autonomy Supportive Coaching Behaviors and Season Success on Coach Perception written by Ian P. Reardon and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Although autonomy supportive coaching has been correlated with both positive performance and psychosocial outcomes, little research has evaluated athletes’ perceptions of autonomy supportive coaching. In this study, autonomy supportive coaching behaviors were evaluated from the perspective of 149 NCAA Division II and III swimmers. Athletes evaluated hypothetical coaches in terms of perceived autonomy support and perceptions of the coach. Season success and autonomy support were manipulated in the scenarios about the hypothetical coaches. Participants who read about the autonomy supportive coaching perceived higher autonomy support than those who read controlling coaching scenarios. Participants who read the successful season scenario reported higher autonomy support and increased positive coach perception than those who read about an unsuccessful season. This finding indicates that a coach with a winning season is more highly regarded than the same coach, exhibiting the same behaviors with an unsuccessful season. Findings have implications for coaching research, education, and training.

Book What Makes a Good Coach

Download or read book What Makes a Good Coach written by Melissa Trivisonno and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various sport associations employ coaches to shape the environment that children and youth experience. Specifically, a coach's style of interaction often directly or indirectly influences youth participation and motivation. While research suggests that adopting autonomy-supportive coaching behaviors enhance children and youth well-being and promote overall healthy development, not every coach uses this particular coaching strategy. The present study therefore sought to examine the determinants of coaches' autonomy-supportive behaviors. The constructs under investigation included ego-involvement, coaching efficacy, perceived athlete competence, and pressure. Data were collected from 100 coaches who currently coach an individual or team sport within the Montreal region. The results demonstrated that motivation efficacy, a sub-factor within coaching efficacy, and perceived athlete competence were positively related to coaches' autonomy-supportive behaviors. The findings present important implications for practitioners regarding training and development opportunities. In addition, suggestions are provided for managers to superimpose the model on the supervisor-employee relationship.

Book The Relationship Between Coaching Behaviors and Athletic Injury

Download or read book The Relationship Between Coaching Behaviors and Athletic Injury written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study sought to expand on past research by examining the relationship between coaching behaviors (i.e., controlling coaching and autonomy-supportive coaching) and athletic injury. One hundred Division I athletes were given a battery of questionnaires, in the form of a single Qualtrics survey to assess the relationship between coaching behaviors and athletic injury. Controlling coaching was found to be positively correlated to the presence of pain and certain perceived causes of injury, as well as negatively correlated to athletes discussing their injury with their coach and the coach being an influence in athletes' decision to return to their sport. Autonomy-supportive coaching was shown to be positively correlated to athletes discussing their injury with their coach and one's coach being an influence in their return to their sport. As such, this study supported past research in showing that autonomy-supportive coaching is related to more adaptive outcomes than controlling coaching behaviors. Therefore, it is recommended that coaches use autonomy-supportive coaching in order to enhance the psychological, as well as physical well-being of their athletes.

Book Factors Influencing the Provision of Autonomy support

Download or read book Factors Influencing the Provision of Autonomy support written by Aidyn Lorraine Iachini and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Coaches often serve a profound role in influencing the overall healthy development and well-being of children and youth. However, coaches' capacities to impact the positive development of youth sport participants often derives from their ability to adopt an autonomy-supportive interpersonal style. As such, gaining an understanding of the factors that might serve to facilitate or inhibit coaches' engagement in autonomy-supportive ways with youth is critical. Thus, the purpose of this study was to both develop and empirically test a comprehensive model of factors that might serve to influence coaches' provision of autonomy-support. The factors in the proposed research model included ego-involvement, self-determination, motivation efficacy, game strategy efficacy, technique efficacy, character-building efficacy, perception of athletes' motivation, perception of athletes' competence, external pressure, and stress. The model was tested in a sample of 353 high school coaches of team sports. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The CFA (CMIN/DF=1.86, RMSEA=.049, SRMR=.045, CFI=.957) and the SEM (CMIN/DF=1.83, RMSEA=.049, SRMR=.043, CFI=.954) supported both the measurement and structural models. Two of the ten predictors of autonomy-support were found significant. Specifically, ego-involvement and external pressure were found to negatively predict coaches' engagement in autonomy-supportive behaviors. Overall, the findings from this study suggest that athletic administrators should consider strategies to alleviate the external pressure coaches face during the course of their jobs. In addition, the findings also suggest that athletic administrators might consider providing more education to coaches regarding the impact that ego-involvement may have on their athletes overall healthy development. Implications for research also are discussed.

Book The Relationship Between Perceived Coaching Behaviors Intrinsic Motivation and Scholarship Status on NCAA Division I Tennis Players Sport Commitment

Download or read book The Relationship Between Perceived Coaching Behaviors Intrinsic Motivation and Scholarship Status on NCAA Division I Tennis Players Sport Commitment written by Ksenia Berestetska and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study was first, to examine the relationships between perceived coaching behaviors and their sport commitment level; second, to explore the association between an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation and their sport commitment; third, to investigate whether an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation would be a stronger predictor of their sport commitment, compared to perceived coaching behaviors; and fourth, to find out whether an athlete’s scholarship status would be a determinant of their sport commitment level. One hundred sixty-one Division I collegiate tennis players completed questionnaires of the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS), Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), and Sport Commitment Model Scale (SCMS). The results indicated that both perceived coaching behaviors, as well as an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation, were determinants of their sport commitment level. However, the findings did not confirm that an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation had a stronger influence on their sport commitment, than perceived coaching behaviors. In addition, the amount of scholarship provided to athletes positively contributed to their sport commitment. Based on the results, this study also discussed practical implications as well as provided directions for future research.

Book Development of the Coach Autonomy Support Beliefs Scale

Download or read book Development of the Coach Autonomy Support Beliefs Scale written by Johannes Jakob Raabe and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coaches' autonomy support is one of the most meaningful influences on the satisfaction of athletes' basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness (Mageau & Vallerand, 2003). Fostering these needs cultivates self-determined motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000), which has been found to positively affect individuals' effort, persistence when faced with adversity, performance, performance-related anxiety, and well-being (Gillet, Berjot, & Gobance, 2009; Mack et al., 2011; Podlog & Dionigi, 2010; Vallerand & Losier, 1999). The reasoned action approach (Fishbein & Ajzen, 2010) suggests that coaches' attitude, perceived behavioral control, and perceived norm toward autonomy support influences their use of autonomy-supportive behaviors. However, prior to this study, no instrument has been developed that measured these behavioral antecedents. Consequently, the purpose of the current research was to develop a scale that assesses coaches' attitude, perceived behavioral control, and perceived norm toward autonomy-supportive behaviors when working with student-athletes during practice. Exploratory Factor Analysis procedures with data from 497 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and II head coaches' revealed adequate model fit for a two-factor solution (RMSEA = .042, 99% CI [.020; .063], p = .703; CFI = .99). The Autonomy Support Belief Scale (ASBS) is an eight item measure with two subscales: personal belief (five items) and social influence (three items). Subsequent correlation and regression analysis further validated the ASBS. Personal belief and social influence were both found to be statistically significant predictors for coaches' behaviors, accounting for 25.9% and 20.3% of the total variance in participants' use of autonomy-supportive behaviors respectively. The ASBS allows researchers, sport psychology professionals, and coach educators to gain insight into coaches' beliefs about autonomy supportive behaviors and can help them shape interventions with coaches, evaluate the effectiveness of such programs, and ultimately impact coaches' use of autonomy support.
