However, not only scientists but many professionals working in the wide spectrum of society, from family to international policy, are interested in having programs of interventions capable of reducing aggression and violence in our society. This comprehensive book is a compendium of most research approaches that are currently taking place in the field of aggression, focusing on the interventions to control and prevent this behavior and the impact on its victims. The chapters of the book include biological approaches to aggression, such as neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, genetics and psychopathology; information about aggression in children and adolescents in different settings such as family, school and community; characteristics if aggression in specific relationships such as marital and sexual, and specific settings such as bars, prisons and traffic; and cultural approaches to aggression, social prejudice, war and programs of peace. Furthermore, a small number of representative chapters about victims are included, ranging from the impact of aggression on behavior and physiology in animal models to victims of war. As this book highlights, the interventions to prevent and control aggression have to be diverse (highly heterogenic) in order to deal with all aspects of human beings and society, ranging from pharmacological control in individuals to programs of peace to promote respect among people and among nations. Book excerpt: Gender role conflict has long been thought to predict perpetration of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in heterosexual relationships, but the relationship between gender role conflict and IPV among same sex male relationships has yet to be adequately explored. The current study investigated how gender role conflict predicted both perpetration and victimization of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) among 320 gay men, 159 who had experienced some form of partner abuse and 161 who endorsed no experiences of abuse. Gender role conflict, specifically a man's drive for success and use of competition to obtain power, significantly predicted IPV perpetration above and beyond being a recipient of abuse. A man's difficulty balancing work and family demands significantly predicted IPV victimization when controlling for perpetration. Implications of the relationship between these two variables, limitations of the study, and ideas for future research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Physical and psychological aggression in dating relationships is prevalent among college students (e.g., Kaura & Lohman, 2007; Shook, Gerrity, Jurich, & Segrist, 2000; Straus, 2008), and students experiencing dating IPV are most likely to speak to friends (Prospero & Vohra-Gupta, 2008). The current study investigated differences in perceptions of heterosexual dating IPV and help-seeking recommendations for a friend as a function of scenario type (e.g., male perpetrator/female victim and female perpetrator/male victim) and participant sex. The study also examined gender role attitudes and attitudes toward dating violence that have been associated with perceptions of dating IPV (e.g., Berkel et al., 2004; Coleman & Stith, 1997; Hillier & Foddy, 1993; Hilton, Harris, & Rice, 2003; Willis, Hallinan, & Melby, 1996). A college sample (N=200) read a dating IPV scenario depicting either male-to-female or female-to-male dating IPV. A series of 2x2 ANCOVAs, controlling for previous exposure to IPV and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, showed that women were more likely than men to hold more egalitarian gender role attitudes, be less accepting of dating violence, perceive the behaviors in the dating scenario as more serious, and be more likely to recommend that a friend seek help at the counseling center. Participants were more likely to recommend the counseling center for female victims than male victims. Path analysis results provided initial support for a theoretical model of counseling center help-seeking recommendations.

Book excerpt: This study focuses on the relationship between dissatisfaction with ones power in dating relationships, parental violence, and dating violence perpetration. A sample of 352 male and 296 female undergraduate college students completed a dating violence survey, including selected subscales from the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) and the Relationship Power Scale. Findings show that relationship power dissatisfaction is associated with the use of violence in dating relationships by both men and women. More importantly, parental violence emerged as an even stronger predictor of dating violence perpetration. Findings also indicate that men's perpetration of dating violence is more strongly related to experiencing mother's violence, whereas women's perpetration of dating violence is more strongly related to experiencing father's violence. Results of this study suggest that it is important for researchers to recognize the impact of gender on dating violence perpetration.

The research questions were investigated with a descriptive research design with a Korean male college sample. Participants completed the Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D), the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability index form C (SD), and questions for their alcohol and tobacco usage. The four-factor solution of the original GRCS was replicated with the Korean sample in this study. The hypotheses concerning gender role conflict and its relations to the experiences of psychological distress were supported. Specifically, all four gender role conflict dimensions exhibited meaningful associations with anxiety or depression. However, the relationship between masculine gender role conflict and the usage of masculine coping methods in Korean culture was not supported by the findings in this study. The findings in terms of their implications for future research and practice are suggested. The limitations of the current study also are discussed.

Book excerpt: Dating violence is a prevalent problem with many long-term deleterious effects, including difficulties with future relationships. Much of the research regarding beliefs about dating violence focuses on the acceptability of violence. The justification of violence in certain situations, such as self-defense, revenge, or playing around, has been found to be strongly related with dating violence, and even to predict dating violence perpetration, particularly among men. Further research has shown that individuals who adhere to traditional gender role attitudes display greater acceptance of violence against women in particular. Additional research has shown that when gender norms are violated, it leads to gender role discrepancy stress, which is associated with dating violence perpetration. However, the majority of the literature focuses on male gender role attitudes and male dating violence toward women, and less is known about the impact of gender role attitudes on female perpetration or experience of dating violence. This study examined 291 young adults between ages 18 and 20. Participants completed anonymous online surveys on experiences of dating violence, gender role attitudes, acceptance of dating violence, and gender stress. Partial correlations revealed that dating violence perpetration is significantly related to attitudes accepting dating violence and gender role attitudes when controlling for victimization. Dating violence victimization is correlated with felt pressure for gender conformity and gender typicality after effects of perpetration are controlled. While traditional gender role attitudes significantly moderated the relationship between acceptance of dating violence and perpetration, gender stress was not found to play a role between the predictor and outcome variables. Surprisingly, gender did not differentiate outcomes for any of the examined interactions.
