Book Factors Influencing Invasion of Stored Wheat Seed by Aspergillus Spp and the Effects of Such Invasion on Germinaton and Amount of Germ Damage

Download or read book Factors Influencing Invasion of Stored Wheat Seed by Aspergillus Spp and the Effects of Such Invasion on Germinaton and Amount of Germ Damage written by G. C. Papavizas and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Isolates of Aspergillus candidus link were able to invade the germs of wheat at moisture contents just above 14.57%. This is more than 1% below the moisture content previously considered sage from this fungus for long time storage of hard red spring, durum and white wheats; 2. Aspergillus flavus link was not able to invade sheat seed at moisture contents below 17%, while Apergillus ochraceus wilhelnas able to invade seed at moisture contents just above 16%; 3. Spores of A. candidus and A.ochraceus germinated at all humidities between 75 and 92, but not at 72%, whereas spores if A.flavus germinated only when exposed to relative humidities above 80%; 4. Hard red spring sheats free of storage fungi and inoculated with A. candidus, A. ochraceus, A. repens, and A. restrictus, were stored at moisture contents of from 14.7 to approximately 20%, and 25oC, for from several weeks to 7 months, the controls that remained free of storage fungi decreased slighty or not at all in germination, and little or no sick wheat developed in them; in those inoculated with the various storage fungi gemination decreased moderately to drastically with increasing time of storage, and considerable amoubts of sick wheat developed; in all cases, invasion by the fungi preceded decrease in sick wheat; 5. Eight different isolates of A. candidus differed considerably in the rate of reduction in germination and rate of development of sick wheat they caused at a moisture content in equilibrium with a reltative humidity of 80%; 6. Inoculations with mixtures if spores of various storage fungi did not reduce germination faster or increase sick wheat faster than the more pathogenic individual fungi of the mixtures, when used alone; A. candidus, although a strong competitor at 80 an 85%, could not compete with menbers of the A. glaucus group at 75% relative humity; 7. At a moisture content of 14.7-14.9%, A. restrictus caused more rapid reduction in germination and more rapid increase in sick wheat than A. repens and A. candidus, At moisture contents of 15-16%, both A. candidus and A. restrictus caused more rapid decrease in germination and more rapid increase in sick wheat than the menbers of the A. glaucus group; 8. Hard red winter wheat was more susceptible to fungus invasion an subsequent deterioration than hard red spring wheat, Durum wheat was equally susceptible with hard red spring wheat, but its moisture content in equilibrium with 80% relative humidity was always lower than that of the other three classes; 9. No mycelium and no alterations in structure were observed in non-inoculated, fungus free seeds stored at 30% relative humidity for 35 days. In the inoculated samples development of the discoloration typical of sick wheat followed mass invasion of embryonic tissues by fungus mycelium.

Book Grain Storage

Download or read book Grain Storage written by Clyde M. Christensen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1969 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain Storage was first published in 1969. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The deterioration or spoilage of stored grain is a problem of serious dimension, both from the standpoint of the financial balance sheet of those engaged in commercial grain enterprises and as a formidable factor in the worldwide fight against hunger. In this useful book the authors present practical information, in non-technical language, about the causes and methods of preventing the deterioration of stored grains and seeds. The emphasis is on the role of fungi but material also is included on problems with insects, mites, and rodents in connection with grain storage. The fungi are of prime importance since not until recently have they been recognized as a major cause of loss of quality in grains and seeds. Even today many of those who deal with grains, from warehouses to management personnel, fail to realize that fungi may play a decisive role in their operations. The book will be of special interest and value to grain merchants and processors, grain elevator managers and operators, grain inspectors, agronomists and agricultural economists concerned with crop production, and many others in agricultural or food processing fields.
