Book Gender Differences in Math and Verbal Self Concept and the Impact on Academic Achievement

Download or read book Gender Differences in Math and Verbal Self Concept and the Impact on Academic Achievement written by Maureen T. B. Drysdale and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between academic domain specific self-concept (specifically mathematical and verbal) and the academic achievement in mathematics and English of young adolescents. Middle school students in grades seven and eight ranging in age from 12 to 15 years completed three subscales of the Self-Description Questionnaire-II (general school, verbal and mathematical self-concept). Results indicated that females displayed lower levels of mathematical self-concept while males displayed lower levels of academic self-concept, verbal self-concept and verbal achievement scores. No significant gender differences were found in mathematics achievement. Educational implications are discussed. (Contains 6 tables.).

Book Structural Equation Model for 7th Grade Mathematical Identity and Achievement

Download or read book Structural Equation Model for 7th Grade Mathematical Identity and Achievement written by Kelly Hawkinson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every student comes into each classroom with a unique mathematical identity. Mathematical identity consists of the stories about a person’s confidence, beliefs, and persistence with mathematics as told by her/himself or by others (Gweshe & Brodie, 2019). Identity is not fixed (Dweck & Yeager, 2019; Wenger, 1998) and is dynamic within a social environment (Langer-Osuna, 2018). The purpose of this study is to investigate mathematical identity, mindset, and social positioning and the mathematical academic achievement of seventh grade students within a rural context. This study uses SEM to investigate the relationships between affect, mindset, positioning and mathematical academic achievement. The factors were founded in the literature and confirmed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A nine-factor model (attitude, value, interest, self-concept, aspiration, anxiety, mindset, adult positioning, peer positioning) was created with acceptable fit (RMSEA = 0.057, CFI = 0.920, TLI = 0.905). SEM results indicate a significant negative relationship between anxiety and aspiration, as well as positive relationships between positioning adult to attitude, positioning peer to attitude, mindset to adult positioning and attitude, aspiration to anxiety and mindset, aspiration to adult positioning and attitude, self-concept to mindset, adult positioning, and attitude, as well as value to aspiration. One-way analysis of variance tests were conducted on these factors by school, teacher, gender, and ethnicity to establish known groups validity. This research adds to the body of work by developing and testing an instrument to investigate students’ mathematical identity, mindset, social positioning, and mathematical achievement through SEM.

Book The Relationship of Student Self concept to Academic Achievement in High School Math Students

Download or read book The Relationship of Student Self concept to Academic Achievement in High School Math Students written by Judson Miller and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to bring into focus some of the affective issues that students face in the math classroom. It is my personal belief that too much attention has been given to cognitive issues in the classroom, especially within the subject of mathematics. The theoretical background of this study lies in previous work in self-concept. Specifically, this research looks at student voices to shed light upon the relationship of student self-concept and academic achievement. To this end, the research relies nearly entirely upon student interviews, which were conducted in Seattle Public School District with twelve 9th and 10th grade students. The students were chosen by the researcher in concert with their teachers to produce a sample that spanned the range of self-concept status. From the original twelve students, three students became the subject of a more specific focus within the study and were asked to complete a follow-up interview. The results of the study focus on specific patterns within four subsets of the entire sample. Commonalities and differences were analyzed in the following groups: students with high math achievement and high self-concept, high math achievement and low self-concept, low math achievement and high self-concept, low math achievement and low self-concept. Special focus was paid to students with high math achievement and low self-concept because of this group's cohesiveness and because of their seemingly counterintuitive attributes.
