Book Research in Law Enforcement Selection

Download or read book Research in Law Enforcement Selection written by Michael G. Aamodt and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the most comprehensive reference ever written for individuals interested in law enforcement selection. The chapters contain meta-analyses (statistical reviews of the literature) investigating the validity of methods used to predict police performance. These methods include education requirements, cognitive ability, background variables (e.g., military experience, arrest record, discipline problems at work), personality inventories, interest inventories, physical agility tests, assessment centers, and interviews. The first chapter in the book is a short primer on meta-analysis that informs the reader about the purpose of meta-analysis and how to interpret the meta-analysis tables contained in the book. Chapter 2 describes the methods used to conduct the meta-analyses for this project. Chapters 3-11 list the meta-analysis results for the various predictors of police performance. Chapter 12 describes a meta-analysis of the relationships among criteria (e.g., performance ratings, discipline problems, commendations), Chapter 13 describes a meta-analysis of the relationships among selection methods, and Chapter 14 describes a meta-analysis of the relationship between the various criteria and sex, race, age, and tenure. Chapter 15 summarizes the previous chapters and identifies future research needs.

Book The Prediction of Police Academy Performance and On the job Performance from Police Recruit Screening Measures

Download or read book The Prediction of Police Academy Performance and On the job Performance from Police Recruit Screening Measures written by Francis David Bertram and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of screening measures (written test, physical agility test, oral interview) to predict performance in police academy training and on the job is assessed in a study of police recruits in Massachusetts. Study subjects were 532 applicants, of whom 51 entered the police academy and eventually became patrol officers. Correlations were sought between scores on written, oral, and physical screening tests and measures of performance in the academy (based on 10 field training ratings) and on the job (based on 8 monthly ratings by supervisors). The written test predicted on-the-job performance. Although the findings indicate that certain items in the test need to be modified or removed, it is concluded that the test meets equal employment opportunity requirements and should be retained. Physical agility test scores showed substantial correlations with several measures of academy performance, but in all cases the correlations were negative. It is concluded that the agility test should be discontinued as a screening device. The oral interview demonstrated minimal correlation with performance measures. It is recommended that the interview be retained as a means of establishing personal contact between applicants and the civil service commission but discontinued as a means of ranking applicants on the eligibility list. The multivariate statistical techniques used to analyze the data are concluded to offer a useful approach to establishing relationships between selection procedures and performance. A bibliography and supporting data are included.

Book An Evaluation of Methods for Predicting Job Performance of Personnelmen

Download or read book An Evaluation of Methods for Predicting Job Performance of Personnelmen written by Patricia J. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Personnelman (PN) rating was the subject of a recent study in which selection test scores were found to correlate satisfactorily with school grades. The purpose of this followup study was to determine whether correlations exist between selection test scores and job performance measures, and whether the experimental tests taken by PN students in school are related to performance in the PN rating. Performance evaluations were obtained for PNs, six months after graduation, from the report of enlisted performance evaluation and from an experimental personnelman supervisor's questionnaire. Basic test battery scores, experimental test data, and school grades were validated against these criteria. Comparisons were made among four samples of graduates and between fleet and recruit input to the schools. Peer rating, instructor's ratings, and final school grades (FSG) were related to job performance.
