Book excerpt: Although principals play a vital role as school leaders, exactly how principal leadership affects student learning is only beginning to be understood. In fact, only a few states have analyzed basic profile data on their principals--their demographics, education, and prior experience before leading a school. Most states also have yet to examine how principals change jobs over time or why they leave the profession. The research presented here marks the most comprehensive profile undertaken to date of Illinois principals. With support from The Joyce Foundation, the Illinois Education Research Council (IERC) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville integrated its research on principal demographics and turnover with research on principal effectiveness and a survey of current Illinois principals' job-related beliefs and practices. The IERC analyzed demographic and employment trends among over 7100 individuals serving as Illinois public school principals between 2001 and 2008, statistically modeled principal impact on student achievement and teacher qualifications in over 3500 Illinois public schools, and surveyed more than one in five active public school principals in the 2010-2011 school year. Only charter schools were excluded from the analyses because their personnel are not consistently included in state records of educator employment. This report highlights emerging trends among Illinois principals, synthesizes key findings from the research, and offers recommendations for policy, practice, and preparation to enhance principals' ability to increase student achievement. This study investigates whether the principal’s leadership styles influence student achievement in rural secondary schools in Nigeria. Firstly, the study determines the overall type of leadership style adopted by upper and lower rural secondary schools in Nigeria. Secondly, it establishes the principal leadership style behavior in both upper and lower secondary schools. Finally, the study intends to investigate the influence of the Nigerian principal leadership style on student achievement in upper and rural secondary schools. The research design used is a quantitative descriptive sectional survey research design. The theoretical or educational gap, locational gap, and the approach gap were identified. In the research process, the researcher utilized two survey questionnaires, "Leadership Orientation Survey" from Bolman and Terrence E. Deal which has three sections, leadership styles, leaders' behavior, and overall rating respectively. The second survey contains one section “principal leadership survey”. Forty-six teachers in upper and forty in lower rural secondary schools were asked, but only 20 in upper and 20 in lower responded during the research. Frequency, percentage, and mean were used.

Book excerpt: Some research suggests that development of professional learning communities might be the organizational strategy that could make school reform more successful. While most schools have not institutionalized the essential components of learning organizations, studies have demonstrated that these attributes must be developed if professional staffs are to realize the full benefit of organizational learning and in the process, create a context of improvement. The primary intent of this study was to learn and understand how principal behaviors influenced the development of shared leadership, shared vision, and supportive conditions; three essential dimensions of professional learning communities. Secondly, this study investigated how these conditions differed among schools which have and have not sustained high levels of student learning. Understanding the influence of principal leadership on conditions for organizational learning can be partially understood through either quantitative or qualitative methods. From this perspective, the mixed methods design utilized in this study allowed both qualitative and quantitative data to be analyzed and interpreted as evidence in understanding the study's problem. Principal and teacher focus-group interviews were used to create a deeper understanding of how principals worked to create conditions for organizational learning. Kouzes and Posner's (2002) Leadership Practices Inventory - Self and Observer Forms were utilized to identify, describe, and measure the perceived leadership practices of principals. The findings of this investigation suggest that principal leadership is a key factor in creating conditions for organizational learning and sustaining high levels of student achievement. Principals in this study who effectively identified and modeled espoused values were perceived to be highly visionary and appeared more effective at sharing leadership, inspiring vision, and creating supportive conditions. Principals who were able to develop a shared vision among staff created strong collaborative cultures characterized by an uncompromised focus on student learning. The findings of this study also indicated that principals who effectively Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act, distributed leadership among staff and demonstrated a systems orientation to leading.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to survey certified teachers in large urban secondary schools in Northern Illinois to examine the relationship between different leadership frame orientations and their impact on successful PLC implementation. The study participants were chosen because all teach in secondary schools that have a high at-risk population defined as any secondary school that receives Title 1 funding. Participants completed a survey that asked about their perception of their principal's leadership frame orientation (leadership style) and also their perception of how successful their PLCs were functioning to see if there was a relationship between different leadership orientations and the successful implementation of PLCs. This was predominately a quantitative study with some qualitative questions included to gain a deeper understanding of the teacher's perceptions of their principals.

Book excerpt: For all that is revealed in the research literature identifying and describing traits and behaviors exhibited by principals who make a positive difference in student learning, many schools are still failing. With all we know, how does this continue to happen? The goal of this study was to develop theory to expand and enrich the existing research by defining and describing what three successful principals---a middle school and two junior high schools---did to turn their failing schools around and positively influence the levels of student achievement in their respective schools. The significant contribution this study adds to the field of educational research is its identification of five themes or categories of leadership implemented by the principal in each of the schools studied that were credited by the participants as causes for their schools' successful turnarounds. These five categories---expectations and accountability, leadership, responding to student needs, climate and culture, and instruction---and their indicators were consistently identified by the participants in all schools as reasons why their schools were successful in improving student performance levels and each school's achievement status. Clearly, the five categories were interrelated and interdependent upon each other and thus, equally critical to the success the schools experienced.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study analyzed the statistical difference between the perceptions of principals and teachers relative to leadership practices and the significance to student achievement. The researcher investigated principal leadership practices in select high schools in rural Northeast Georgia. The 188 participants completed the study from five high schools. The researcher used the Leadership Practices Inventory (Kouzes & Posner, 2003) instrumentation to record responses from principals and teachers in order to analyze leadership practices. Extant data researched from the 2010 school year identified schools successfully meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The study supported the findings of Kouzes and Posner (2003) relative to how principal leadership practices impacted student achievement. The study identified three domains of the LPI instrument significant at the .05 level. The study also revealed similar perceptions of teachers and principals for the Kouzes and Posner leadership practices.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored possible connections between school principals' leadership styles and behaviors and closing the student achievement gap at three schools serving high poverty student populations. Two of the three schools were high schools designated as Priority Schools in 2012 as a result of student achievement that ranked in the bottom 5% of all Michigan schools. The two schools managed to exit the Priority designation in 2017 after implementing school culture and instruction reforms that improved student achievement. The third school was a K-8, which was not designated as a Priority School. It had the same student demographics as the Priority Schools, and it is located in the same district as one of them. It was added to the study to reinforce the data. The researcher conducted 17 interviews. A bottom-up inductive coding approach was adopted for the qualitative data analysis. The researcher assigned emerging themes specific and meaningful codes relevant to the topic and purpose of the study. Based on the data from the three schools, a possible connection between school leadership and closing the student achievement gap was found. The three principals adopted practices and behaviors relevant to multiple leadership styles. They did not limit themselves to only one leadership style or a set of behaviors. The two Priority School principals had to undo the negative impact of the former toxic culture. The three principals instituted a positive school culture based on trust, respect, collaboration, and accountability. They indirectly impacted student achievement by improving the schools' culture and climate and enhancing the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and data-driven interventions. They worked with all the stakeholders to align and streamline all the efforts and programs into well-coordinated plans and established common language and practices regarding teaching and learning. They involved all the teachers in the decision making about teaching and learning.

However, we know little about how context impacts which leadership for learning practices are prioritized by teachers and administrators in these different contexts of school level (elementary or secondary) and region (rural, small town, suburban, urban). The purpose of this dissertation study is to examine how differences in context affect specific leadership for learning practices. These differences will provide evidence for the need to revamp the principal evaluation systems that are currently in use and allow us to identify opportunities for preparation, support, and professional development for principals.

Book excerpt: School and district leadership has been the focus of intense scrutiny in recent years as researchers try to define not only the qualities of effective leadership but the impact of leadership on the operation of schools, and even on student achievement. A recently published literature review entitled "How Leadership Influences Student Learning" contributes to this growing body of knowledge by examining the links between student achievement and educational leadership practices. Authors Leithwood, Seashore Louis, Anderson, and Wahlstrom (2004) make two important claims. First, "leadership is second only to classroom instruction among all school-related factors that contribute to what students learn at school" (p. 7). Second, "leadership effects are usually largest where and when they are needed most" (p. 7). Without a powerful leader, troubled schools are unlikely to be turned around. The authors stress that "many other factors may contribute to such turnarounds, but leadership is the catalyst" (p. 7). The review, commissioned by the Wallace Foundation, is the first step in a five-year, 180-school study of the links between student achievement and educational leadership practices. The planned study is a joint effort of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto and the University of Minnesota's Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement. This month's newsletter summarizes what the review reveals about the basics of successful education leadership and offers practical suggestions for their implementation.
