Book The Relationship Between Plastic Deformation and Fracture in Alpha Titanium

Download or read book The Relationship Between Plastic Deformation and Fracture in Alpha Titanium written by M. F. Amateau and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack initiation and propagation behavior was studied in unalloyed titanium containing between 0.25 and 0.6% oxygen and in Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy containing between 0.07 and 0.37% oxygen. Large-grained tensile specimens were tested at -320 F and metallographically examined to identify the mechanism of microcrack formation. Precracked single edge notched specimens were tested at -320 F in order to relate crack propagation events to fracture energy and grain orientation. Second order twin induced microcracking, which is responsible for brittle behavior in unalloyed titanium at 0.25% oxygen, becomes restricted at 0.5 and 0.6% oxygen. In Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy containing 0.3% oxygen, slip induced microcracks form in addition to twin induced microcracks. A general correlation was found between fracture energy, grain orientation and crack propagation events in unalloyed titanium containing 0.25 to 0.6% oxygen. (Author).

Book Deformation and Fracture of P M Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Deformation and Fracture of P M Titanium Alloys written by D. A. Koss and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress is reviewed for a research program which is examining selected processing-microstructure-property relationships which limit the mechanical properties of P/M Ti alloys in particular and aspects of ductile fracture in general. The approach is quite broad and ranges from experimental and analytical studies of the effect of porosity on the fracture of engineering alloys to be an experimental examination of the hot isostatic pressing of metallic powders. Progress for the period 10/1/82-9/30/83 is reviewed for the following aspects of this research program: the tensile deformation and fracture of alloys containing porosity; experiment and modeling of P/M titanium alloys; the influence of strain-rate on the flow and fracture behavior of titanium and nickel containing porosity; a modeling study of the influence of void distributions on the mechanism of ductile fracture; hot isostatic pressing of metallic powders; and the influence of plastic anisotropy on the hydrogen embrittlement of titanium under multiaxial states of stress.

Book RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FRACTURE TOUGHNESS AND ESTIMATED PLASTIC ZONE SIZE IN STEEL TITANIUM AND ALUMINUM ALLOYS

Download or read book RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FRACTURE TOUGHNESS AND ESTIMATED PLASTIC ZONE SIZE IN STEEL TITANIUM AND ALUMINUM ALLOYS written by and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of plastic deformation at a crack tip can be estimated using Irwin's plastic zone correction factor derived from linear elastic theory. The size of the plastic zone is considered to be a measure of fracture toughness, since the resistance of a metal to crack propagation is related to the deformation ahead of the crack tip. The relationship is confirmed between fracture toughness and plastic zone size calculated from elastic considerations for steel, aluminum, and titanium alloys. Within each of the metal systems, the calculated plastic enclave increases with increasing Dynamic Tear (DT) test energy for fracture. However, the plastic zone size is an unreliable indicator of the amount of energy absorbed in the formation of the zone when a comparison is made among different metal systems. For a given size plastic enclave, the energy absorbed by the metal during the deformation process is least for aluminum alloys, while significantly greater for titanium and steel alloys in that order. When brittle alloys are compared, the difference among metal systems in the quantity of energy absorbed to form the zone is considerably diminished.

Book Plastic Flow and Fatigue Behavior of Alpha Beta Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Plastic Flow and Fatigue Behavior of Alpha Beta Titanium Alloys written by Harold Margolin and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Void formation, void growth and tensile fracture was studied in ELI Ti-6Al-4V heat treated to strengths of 110 ksi (758 MN/sq m) to 140 ksi (965 MN/sq m) for both equiaxed and Widmanstatten plus grain boundary alpha structures. Void formation occurred at alpha-matrix interface, at alpha-alpha boundaries and at twin-untwin interfaces within alpha particles. Void growth was found to be a function of microstructure, being more rapid at grain boundary alpha-matrix locations than in equiaxed alpha structures. A plot of corrected fracture stress, shows separate curves with about the same slope, for equiaxed and grain boundary alpha structures, with the equiaxed alpha structures showing the higher fracture stresses. The dependency of void growth at grain boundaries on grain size and strain hardening rate is discussed. Initial work on low cycle fatigue behavior at constant strain of the Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo alloy is outlined, and plans for the study of factors controlling the yield strength of alpha-beta Ti alloys are presented.
