Book Personality Traits and Career Decidedness

Download or read book Personality Traits and Career Decidedness written by Ryan Michael Smith and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on vocational behavior has made progress in identifying broad personality traits associated with career indecision; however, important questions remain unanswered about the temporal stability of relationships between broad personality traits and Career Decidedness (CD), and about the role of narrow personality traits as predictors of CD, both of which were addressed in this longitudinal field study. A total of 2,046 undergraduate students completed an online personality inventory and CD questionnaire. A sub-group (N=267) responded to a follow-up questionnaire seven months later. Results indicated, as hypothesized, that CD correlated positively with the broad (Big Five) personality traits, openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. However, CD did not correlate as expected with the broad trait, extraversion, and correlated significantly and inversely with the broad trait, neuroticism, only for low-achievement students. Results showed that the narrow traits of optimism and work drive correlated significantly and positively with CD, and that these narrow traits alone accounted for an additional 5.6% variance in CD above and beyond broad traits (5.8%). CD correlated positively with chronological age, as predicted. However, Career Decidedness only increased through the first three of four years of college, and contrary to predictions, showed a non-significant decline in the senior year. In an unexpected finding based only on the sub-group who completed the second set of questionnaires, the relationship of personality and CD strengthened over the 7-month span of this study, yet instability within CD warrants caution. Results suggest questions for future research and implications for practice in vocational psychology.

Book The Relationship Between Myers Briggs Personality Type and the Career Decision making Process

Download or read book The Relationship Between Myers Briggs Personality Type and the Career Decision making Process written by Jolaine B. Wosepka and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine if a personality test, The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and a career decision-making process questionnaire could be used to identify specific personality types, and examine the problems and influences these types have in the career decision-making process. The sample for this study consisted of 33 undeclared/undecided students, 25 females and 8 males, enrolled in the fall 1987 freshman and sophomore classes. Two research questions and 13 hypotheses directed this study. Research question 1 asked, "Can the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator be used to assess career decision-making in undecided students?" Results indicated that two Myers-Briggs types, Feeling and Perceiving, appeared twice as often as other types. Research question 2 asked, "Can the career decision-making process questionnaire be used to assess career decision-making in undecided students?" Results found that Introverted types reported greater indecision and anxiety in career decision-making. Correlations between MBTI types and career influences revealed relationships between: Perceiving types and their interests, Thinking types and faculty members, Judging types and earning a degree, Feeling types and making money. Correlations between MBTI types and ideal job features found these relationships: Introverted and Sensing types and making money, Introverted types and security for the future, Extraverted types and being of service to others, Intuitive types and being creative, Intuitive types and leisure time, Thinking types and recognition and prestige, Judging types and ability, Perceiving types and personal fulfillment, recognition and prestige, and being creative.

This book was released on 2022-08-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction This study focuses to explore the link between personality traits and career behaviour among students and main question of this research is to understand the influence of BFF of personality on CDMSE and CM of college students. Some students take up in higher education after proper career planning and believe that college plays an important role in furnishing their skills to enable them for a career growth, grab a good job and make them future ready. According to Change (2000) "graduation is right time to make career decision for future careers". Many students enter college without any career planning and having a lot of confusion about where to go after college is over or finishing their studies. They fail to carry realistic expectations from their respective college in this situation. College is an entity, which can provide complete support to students to work on both their personal as well as career development while making students career ready. CDMSE as a concept related to positive beliefs of students about choosing their right career and developing Career Maturity, which makes them capable to choose their career. BFF of personality always influence actions and decisions of students and impacting their career choices to some extent. Making career choice is not only about entering a job or finalising a career option but it is more than that like choosing a life style, taking responsibilities, handling situations and managing peoples based on one‟s potential, strengths, skills, personality and attitude. It seems that BFF of personality has a strong link between CDMSE and CM,

Book The Relationship Between Broad and Narrow Personality Traits and Change of Academic Major

Download or read book The Relationship Between Broad and Narrow Personality Traits and Change of Academic Major written by Nancy A. Foster and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits and academic major change in two samples of college undergraduates. Utilizing a field study design, a total number of 859 undergraduates completed an online inventory that included the "Big Five" and other -related, narrow personality traits, as well as academic major change and various demographic variables. A number of expected and unexpected findings emerged. As hypothesized, the traits of Sense of Identity and Extraversion were significantly and negatively related to decisions to change major, but only for certain grade levels. Contrary to expectations, Career Decidedness and Optimism were significantly and positively related to academic major change across groups, regardless of class ranking. When parsing the data by college year, additional and significant relationships appeared. Extraversion and Sense of Identity were positively related to academic major change among freshmen, sophomores and seniors, which was a significant and unexpected finding. Conscientiousness, and Emotional Stability were unrelated to academic major change overall, but were significantly and positively related to students changing major at least one time. Among non-directional hypotheses, Work Drive was negatively associated with academic major change across all groups, as well as among juniors and sophomores. Openness was both positively (sophomores) and negatively (juniors) related to major change. A final analysis that looked at students who changed majors two or more times, both Self-directed Learning and Work Drive significantly and positively correlated with the dependent variable. Both Career Decidedness and Optimism increased the odds of being a major changer in a logistic regression analysis of a residence hall sample. Implications for career planning and advising are discussed, along with future research recommendations.

Book The Revised NEO Personality Inventory

Download or read book The Revised NEO Personality Inventory written by Ralph L. Piedmont and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of individual differences has a long history. As early as 2200 B.C. the Chinese were employing methods to select candidates for civil service positions. Over the ensuing centuries philosophers, theologians, and the nobility all noticed and debated the role of "character" in shaping the destiny and quality of individual lives. This interest spawned widely different methods of evaluating the timbre of temperament-bumps on the head, lines on the hand, shape of the body-all of which were em ployed in attempts to gain insight into basic human motives. The emer gence of the scientific method and its application to this endeavor reinvigorated society's efforts in this direction, and an abundant variety of assessment instruments consequently became available. The outbreak of World War I created a need for the efficient assess ment of individual differences in large groups. Such instruments as the Woodworth Personal Data Sheet and the Army Alpha Test resulted in gen uine breakthroughs in assessment technology. These tests provided stan dardized sets of items that permitted quantitative comparisons among people. Over the years, numerous scales have been developed which have been based on widely differing levels of psychometric sophistication.
