Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personal characteristics of urban community college trustees and their viewpoints of (a) the community college mission, (b) mission function statements, and (c) the ranking of mission functions. Three general research questions guided this study: Is there a relationship between the personal characteristics of trustees and their viewpoints of mission function statements of urban community colleges? Is there a relationship between the personal characteristics of trustees and their viewpoints of the ranking of mission functions? Is there a relationship between the personal characteristics of trustees and their viewpoints of mission? The relationship of the dichotomous variables associated with the personal characteristics of gender, race, age, employment status, educational level, primary occupation, professions, social class, and family annual income of trustees were examined to determine the relationship with trustee viewpoints, which served as dependent interval variables. Crosstabulation was used to determine differences in the first two hypotheses associated with the first two research questions. Multiple Regression was the statistical application used to test the hypothesis associated with the third research question. The level of significance was established at p ≤ .05. Book excerpt: This study examined the role perceptions of trustees in the locally controlled Oregon community college system and the state controlled Washington community college system. Authorities in the literature were consulted to define the "ideal trustee role" and the study determined which governance system was most effective in fostering this "ideal trustee role" as measured by trustee role perceptions. The relationship between the personal characteristics of trustees and trustee role perceptions were also studied. This part of the study showed which trustees in each system perceived their role as being closest to the "ideal trustee role." A questionnaire was developed and disseminated to all 105 Oregon and all 115 Washington community college trustees. This questionnaire was a series of thirty-six trustee responsibility statements that related to the "ideal trustee role." Trustees were asked to respond to these statements on a Likert scale. Personal demographics were also gathered on all respondents. The components of the "ideal trustee role" were defined as: (1) Assure that the college fulfills the purpose for which it was established and evaluate college outcomes. (2) Select, evaluate, counsel with, and, if necessary, terminate the chief executive officer. (3) Interpret community interests to the college and college interests to the community. (4) Oversee the acquisition, expenditure and investment of funds and management of college facilities. Washington trustees perceived themselves closer to components 1, 2 and 3 of the "ideal trustee role" than Oregon trustees and Oregon trustees perceived themselves closer to role component 4. However, the similarities in the role perception responses of the two populations were more noticeable than the differences. In general, trustees who fell into the following demographic categories perceived themselves closer to the "ideal trustee role" than trustees who fell into other demographic categories. These groups included trustees who were female, trustees that held, at least, a bachelor's degree, trustees with annual incomes above $50,000, trustees who were members of a community service organization, trustees with more than four years service on the board, trustees that held managerial/professional jobs, and trustees who were Democratic or Independent politically.

This qualitative study sought board members' understanding about (1) their institution's identity utilizing the organizational identity theory and (2) the critical elements of the match between their understanding of the community college and the desired characteristics of the selected presidential candidate. Mission statements, vision statements, and presidential position descriptions which described responsibilities and qualifications were collected from both rural and urban community colleges across the nation and were analyzed and compared with board members' interview data. Board members suggested that communication skills and the ability to develop relationships were vital to the president for effective leadership in collaborative efforts with businesses and the community. These efforts would support the community colleges' core attribute of student access to a post-secondary education in preparation for the workforce or baccalaureate degree. Both urban and rural participants understood the community colleges' role in the community as a conduit for economic development by establishing partnerships with local businesses. Data also reflected the utilization of community colleges for self-preservation of rural communities or culture and tradition.

Book excerpt: Based on a study of 256 exemplary community college presidents, this book examines the attributes of outstanding leaders and their ability to orchestrate organizational change. Chapter 1 provides the background for the study, emphasizes the importance of leadership, and identifies attributes common to transformational leaders; that is, leaders who work with their followers so that each raises the other to higher levels of motivation and morality. Chapter 2 summarizes leadership theory and offers a discussion of transformational leadership and its place in a rapidly changing society. After chapter 3 reviews the study methodology, chapters 4 and 5 present findings on the demographic and leadership characteristics of the presidents selected for in-depth study. Chapters 6 through 10 discuss key elements of transformational leadership, including shared vision, teamwork and collaborative decision making, institutional climate and the relationship between the institution and the individuals within it, motivation as a means of achieving followers' acceptance of the shared vision, and personal values, integrity, and commitment to learning. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop a profile of female community college presidents by examining their personal characteristics, career paths, mentorship, and professional development. The participants in this study were female community college presidents whose institutions were members of the Association of Community College Trustees. Quantitative data were gathered and analyzed to obtain a demographic profile and provided an update to the research findings of two similar studies about female college presidents and their ascension to presidencies. The results of this study suggested that participants had mentors who influenced their career paths to become presidents. Furthermore, an analysis of the data revealed that participating in professional development activities provided additional skills and opportunities that helped the participants become presidents. Finally, the data suggested that following the traditional career path of faculty member, dean, chief academic officer, and then president was not necessary to become a president. These findings were compared to similar studies. This study adds to the body of literature that examines women in leadership at community colleges. of Advanced Studies, Leadership and Policy The problem examined in this study was the phenomena of disproportionate suspension of African American males in urban high schools. In order to evaluate this phenomenon, a cultural lens was used to understand the experiences that led to suspension of African American males at True Urban High School. Research participants recounted (in their own voices) the suspension experience from precipitating event(s) to culmination. Further, the researcher examined the degree to which teachers' level of cultural proficiency played a role in the imposition of suspension on these students. In order to understand the suspension experiences, a qualitative research design was employed. Survey data from seven African American male participants (four of the seven were purposefully selected for individual interview sessions) and two teachers were analyzed in the completion of this research. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Given the challenges facing contemporary community colleges, governing boards are in need of information and data gathered from empirically grounded studies of current governing practices. The primary purpose of this study was to describe governance practices of community college boards of trustees in one state in the Northeast region of the United States. A secondary intent of the study was to examine the relationship between institutional structure of community colleges and trustees' perspectives on select governance practices of community college trustees. The study utilized and was informed by secondary analysis of data secured from a cross-sectional population of community college chairs. The research design was a secondary analysis of survey data from McPhail's (2006--07) national study of community college governance trends and practices. Governance practices and the relationship between governance practices and institutional structure were described using descriptive statistics. The research variables for the study were institutional structure and the following governance practices: (a) board executive committee, (b) risk management policies and practices, (c) board and trustee evaluation, (d) practices of the new work of nonprofit boards, (e) ethical standards, and (f) board education. The population consisted of 14 community college board chairs. Finding from this study revealed that the majority of boards engage in practices or activities related to Taylor, Chait, and Holland's The New Work of the Nonprofit Board. Findings from this research support the need for more information and data about community college governance board practices the relationship between institutional structure and governance practices. The data suggests that there may be a relationship between board practices and institutional structure. The study adds to empirical research on board practices. Few studies have taken an empirical approach to the study of governance practices and even fewer, if any, have examined the relationship between practices and institutional characteristics. This study provides varied recommendations related to community college governance for future research and practice. -- Abstract.
