This book was released on 1996-03-27 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hospitals and nursing homes are responding to changes in the health care system by modifying staffing levels and the mix of nursing personnel. But do these changes endanger the quality of patient care? Do nursing staff suffer increased rates of injury, illness, or stress because of changing workplace demands? These questions are addressed in Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes, a thorough and authoritative look at today's health care system that also takes a long-term view of staffing needs for nursing as the nation moves into the next century. The committee draws fundamental conclusions about the evolving role of nurses in hospitals and nursing homes and presents recommendations about staffing decisions, nursing training, measurement of quality, reimbursement, and other areas. The volume also discusses work-related injuries, violence toward and abuse of nursing staffs, and stress among nursing personnelâ€"and examines whether these problems are related to staffing levels. Included is a readable overview of the underlying trends in health care that have given rise to urgent questions about nurse staffing: population changes, budget pressures, and the introduction of new technologies. Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes provides a straightforward examination of complex and sensitive issues surround the role and value of nursing on our health care system.

Book Nurse Staffing and Its Relationship with Patient Safety and Patient and Staff Satisfaction

Download or read book Nurse Staffing and Its Relationship with Patient Safety and Patient and Staff Satisfaction written by Midhun John and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many current researches and surveys present that provide evidence that inadequate nursing staffing is associated with patient safety, negative patient outcomes, and that it leads to decreased patient satisfaction. The capstone project will have discussions about why nursing shortages is presently very high, and also will provide changes that can be made in the workforce to improve patient satisfaction, and safety. The purpose of the project is to provide better understanding of the never resolved issue of inadequate nurse staffing, and to introduce an effective plan that provides increased patient safety, and satisfaction. There is evidence that mandated patient to nurse ratios, and staffing based on patient acuity levels increase patient care and satisfaction. There are barriers to making these changes as facilities have concerns that changes to the current staffing ratios, and routines can increase cost, and reduce its financial gains. In this writing, solution will be provided to the readers on how to fix the problem of inadequate staffing, and implementations that can be performed on a unit to see changes. This essay will provide patient care, safety, and satisfaction and how it is correlated with nurse staffing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the revolutionary Institute of Medicine reports To Err is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm, Keeping Patients Safe lays out guidelines for improving patient safety by changing nurses' working conditions and demands. Licensed nurses and unlicensed nursing assistants are critical participants in our national effort to protect patients from health care errors. The nature of the activities nurses typically perform â€" monitoring patients, educating home caretakers, performing treatments, and rescuing patients who are in crisis â€" provides an indispensable resource in detecting and remedying error-producing defects in the U.S. health care system. During the past two decades, substantial changes have been made in the organization and delivery of health care â€" and consequently in the job description and work environment of nurses. As patients are increasingly cared for as outpatients, nurses in hospitals and nursing homes deal with greater severity of illness. Problems in management practices, employee deployment, work and workspace design, and the basic safety culture of health care organizations place patients at further risk. This newest edition in the groundbreaking Institute of Medicine Quality Chasm series discusses the key aspects of the work environment for nurses and reviews the potential improvements in working conditions that are likely to have an impact on patient safety.

Book Nurse Staffing and Patient Ratio

Download or read book Nurse Staffing and Patient Ratio written by Sumi George and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inadequate nurse staffing is a worldwide problem in the health care field, because its influence in safe and better delivery of patient care, patients improved satisfaction as well as nurses work satisfaction. Insufficient staffing is not safe for patient's life and the heavy assignments are the main cause for poor patient care and safety of the patient. Lesser mortality rate and reduced hospital stay related to better staffing. Data's and researches showed that heavy workload for staff is always affecting the safety of patients and quality of nursing care. Researches showed that better staffing always make better outcome for patient's health condition. This paper will describe the PICOT question 0−́for hospitalized patient does lower patient to nurse ratio compared to higher patient to nurse ratio improves patient and nurses satisfaction during their hospitalization? According to a study done in Journal of the American Medical Association each additional patient assigned to a nurse are connected with 7% increase in the likelihood of dying and failure to rescue rates, it also associated with 23% of higher rate of burnout and 15% increased job dissatisfaction (Knudson, 2013). This essay explains the results of better nurse staffing and patient ratio, and its outcomes like improved quality of patient care, improved nurse's satisfaction are some of them. There are many researches and evidence based theories that support this topic, that better staffing improves quality of patient care and improved nurses and patient satisfaction. According to a study conducted in a Chinese hospital shows that better staffing improves nurse's self-confidence, patients care and reduced number of fatal events. This also improves patient's safety and nurses burnouts. (Zhu and others, 2012).

Book Nurse Staffing and Quality of Patient Care

Download or read book Nurse Staffing and Quality of Patient Care written by U.s. Department of Health and Human Services and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A shortage of registered nurses, in combination with increased workload, has the potential to threaten quality of care. Increasing the nurse to patient ratios has been recommended as a means to improve patient safety. However, the cost effectiveness of increasing registered nurse (RN) staffing is controversial. This systematic review analyzes associations between hospital nurse staffing and patient outcomes with consideration of variables that could influence the primary association. The basic research questions were: 1. How is a specific nurse to patient ratio associated with patient outcomes (i.e., mortality; adverse drug events, nurse quality outcomes, length of stay; patient satisfaction with nurse care)? How does this association vary by patient characteristics, nurse characteristics, organizational characteristics, and nursing outcomes? 2. How is a measure of nurse work hours (hours per patient or patient day) associated with the same patient outcomes? 3. What factors influence nurse staffing policies? 4. What nurse staffing strategies are effective for improving the patient outcomes listed in question 1? 5. What gaps in research on nurse staffing and patient outcomes can be identified to address in future studies? Questions 1, 2, and 4 are addressed in the systematic review using meta-analytic approaches. The literature associated with question 3 does not lend itself to meta-analysis. Questions 1 and 2 address the same basic association but employ two different measures of nurse staffing. The nurse to patient ratio relies on a general ratio, which may include all nurses assigned to a unit, including non-clinical time, whereas nurse work hours look specifically at nurses involved in patient care. Even beyond this distinction, the varied ways staffing rates are calculated complicates pooling data.

Book Nurse to patient Ratios and the Impact on Patient Care

Download or read book Nurse to patient Ratios and the Impact on Patient Care written by Amanda Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive patient outcomes are directly related to quality of care received and there is a vast amount of research that determines the relationship between nurse staffing ratios and patient outcomes. The problem observed in this study is a facility in which there is a high acuity and high nurse-to-patient ratio assignments. The quality of care decreases due to the nurse having so many patients, typically six, and so much to do and assess for each one. Due to the negative patient outcomes and stress of nurses not being able to complete every task, especially not on time. With at least four extensive medication passes per patient and ordered tasks for each patient throughout the day, one can observe how the nurses ability to turn six patients every two hours on the hour, providing them with prompt PRN medications for pain, and performing tasks as proper as they should be performed is hindered. The nurse-to-patient ratio in the acute care setting should be 1:4 (one nurse per four patients), no exceptions. The problem associated with this plan is that the facility does not want to spend the money on hiring and having more nurses per shift. The facility provides staffing according to Hours Per Patient Day or HPPD. The problem with this system is that the HPPD has a set number and only the number of patients determines the staffing, not the acuity level of the patients. The problem needs to be presented to administration and management along the company chain with an exceptional and effective strategy, goal, implementation process, and evaluation process. After one year of implementation, data collected and obtained will be compared with data from one-year prior to determine the difference in results. The results will compare occurrence of wounds, medication errors, hospital-associated infections, falls and injuries, all associated costs with each as well as patient satisfaction surveys and nurse job satisfaction surveys. The results will be disseminated in an effective and appropriate manner.

Book Congruence of Nurse Staffing and Activities with Patient Needs

Download or read book Congruence of Nurse Staffing and Activities with Patient Needs written by Melita Per≈°olja and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aimed to discover the correlation between patient satisfaction with nursing care activities and staffing patterns. The research was conducted at the medical ward of a secondary care regional hospital in Slovenia over one month. Data was collected with regard to the following: (1) patients cared for daily and number of hours/patients day at the ward level, (2) patient needs (using a classification system), (3) nurse activities as observed at 10-minute intervals, and (4) the Patient Perception of Hospital Experience with Nursing tool. A total of 218 patients were involved, and their satisfaction with nursing care was found to be high. Patient satisfaction was negatively correlated with the number of patients cared for at the unit daily, but positively with the number of care hours per patient day, the proportion of registered nurses in the nursing team, the realized percentage of the registered nurse personnel requirements, and with some direct care activities. The correlation also revealed three process items (undivided attention, explanation, and things are done without asking) being the special strengths of nursing care activities. The results show that nurse-staffing and process patterns affect patient experience. It is thus recommended to increase the amount of nursing care offered by registered nurses, while nurses,Äô competences can affect the process of care, and thus patient satisfaction.

Book Is There a Relationship Between Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care and the Patient s Willingness to Return to that Hospital for Further Care

Download or read book Is There a Relationship Between Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care and the Patient s Willingness to Return to that Hospital for Further Care written by Marie Galletta and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess patient satisfaction with nursing care as a gauge to determine the patient's willingness to return to that hospital for further care. The Patient Satisfaction Scale was distributed to a sample of twenty-five females at a community hospital located on Staten Island. This survey elicited the patients' attitudes towards nursing care and their willingness to return to that institute for further care. This study was conducted anonymously on an in-patient basis. Included in this study were women between 18 and 45 years of age who were 24 hours post vaginal delivery or cesarean section. Data was analyzed utilizing a simple correlation method. High correlation was found between patient satisfaction with nursing care and the client's willingness to return to that hospital for further care. This places the nurse in a crucial position to influence patient's perceptions of their hospitalization. Nursing implications are concerned with the nurse extending social courtesy and service to the patient to help ensure patient satisfaction. This study makes recommendations to implement this survey on an out-patient basis to elicit truer feelings. Provisions for better control of such variables as the hospital utilized for the study and patient and staff characteristics could be made to obtain significant results. Other factors such as hospital location, medical care and hospital technology should be examined to determine the client's willingness to return to the hospital for further care.
