Book excerpt: Parenting style is one of the essential aspects influencing students’ academic performance, and this thesis focused on the effectiveness of authoritative and authoritarian parenting (Zahed et al., 2016). The choice of the parenting style employed in a household is the result of a myriad of other elements coming together. I studied the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement in relation to students' ethnicity and socio-economic levels (SES). A survey was created to assess the preferred parenting style, ethnicity, academic outcomes, and the family’s SES. The study found two correlations. First, a negative correlations between the characteristics of authoritative style and authoritarian parenting (demandingness and responsiveness). Second, a positive correlation between ethnicity and socioeconomic level. Contrary to previous research, this sample showed a higher socioeconomic status for Non-White students. Results from 148 students showed no relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement as a function of ethnicity and SES. Even though, there was no significant relationship between the variables, all the ethnicities in the sample showed propensity towards an authoritative parenting style. These findings were corroborated by other studies that focused on college students to show no significant impact of parenting style on academic achievement. Higher education can be considered a factor that balances out the scales and provides equal opportunity for all.

The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student's learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the three styles of parenting, learning autonomy, perceived parental autonomy support, and scholastic achievement in undergraduate college students. Sixty-one participants were recruited at a small liberal arts college in the northeastern United States to complete questionnaires, which measured perceived parental authority of the participants' parents, perceived parental autonomy support, and students' own learning autonomy. The participants were also asked to list their grade point average. The results revealed positive and negative correlations between many of the variables in the study; however, simple regression analyses did not yield any statistically significant relationships between parental authority, learning autonomy, perceived autonomy support, and scholastic achievement.

Book excerpt: The study of the relationship between parenting and child development has been of paramount interest to psychologists for decades (Hart, Olsen, Robinson, & Mandelco, 1997). Although the link between parenting style and academic achievement has been well established in regard to children and adolescents, the literature concerning young adults, of the university-aged population, is limited (Cutrona, Cole, Colangelo, Assouline, & Russell, 1994). By examining the relation of parenting style to academic achievement in young adults, and concerning both maternal and paternal parenting styles, the present study attempted to determine if Baumrind’s (1971) typology of parenting styles can be extended to include young adults. After surveying 397 university students, findings revealed that correlations between parenting style and academic achievement in young adults were insignificant. Further, although multiple regression analyses revealed that parenting style significantly contributed to the prediction of academic achievement, relatively low estimates of the proportion of variance accounted for by the regression suggest that such a contribution and difference between those who live with their parents and those who do not are barely noteworthy. Implications concerning the latent effects of parenting on academic achievement are presented; however, as the results of the present study are inconsistent with previous findings concerning children and adolescents (Baumrind, 1968; Dornbusch, Ritter, Liederman, Roberts, & Fraleigh, 1987; Slicker, 1998), limitations and methodological issues are discussed, as well as recommendations for future research.

Recognizing the presence of families, researchers have investigated the relationship between parenting style and college success variables such as academic performance (Miller & Speirs Neumeister, 2017), wellness (Coccia & Darling, 2017), and transition (Love & Thomas, 2014). In recent literature, studies have focused on grit and its relation to college success (Bowman et al., 2015; Duckworth et al., 2007); yet, research on the relationship between parenting style and grit is lacking. This quantitative correlational study investigated the relationship between college student self-report of grit (Duckworth & Quinn, 2009) and parenting style (Baumrind, 1971b). The study was guided by the following research questions: 1. Is there a relationship between parenting style and college student grit? To what extent and in what manner does parenting style explain the variance in grit? 2. Is there a relationship among parenting style, college student grit, and demographics? To what extent and in what manner does parenting style and demographics explain the variance in grit? Data were collected from undergraduate students (N = 974) through a questionnaire.
