Book The Association Between Coach athlete Relationship Quality and Sport domain Specific Self esteem in Collegiate Athletes

Download or read book The Association Between Coach athlete Relationship Quality and Sport domain Specific Self esteem in Collegiate Athletes written by Kara C. Scott and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to examine the association between coach-athlete relationship quality and sport domain-specific self-esteem in collegiate athletes and (b) to assess differences between class levels within this potential correlation. Two established questionnaires, the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004) and the Elite Athlete Self-Description Questionnaire (Marsh et al., 1997), were administered electronically in this crosssectional study. Participants (N = 180) included male and female collegiate athletes, representing eighteen NCAA sports. Correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship among coach-athlete relationship quality and sport domain-specific self-esteem. Fisher’s z transformation was used to test for differences in this association across class levels. Significant associations in theoretically expected directions were found between coach-athlete relationship variables and sport domainspecific self-esteem; higher quality coach-athlete relationships associated with higher self-esteem perceptions and vice versa. When comparing these associations by class level, a difference was only found between sophomores and seniors. The findings of this study show an association between coach-athlete relationship quality and sport-domain specific self-esteem. Furthermore, results suggest that an individual’s age or class year may not influence the strength of this relationship. The findings of this study support development of higher quality coach-athlete relationships and the enhancement of athlete self-perception to facilitate adaptive sport experiences for collegiate athletes.

Book The Role of Friendship as a Buffer for the Negative Consequences of Sports Jealousy on Self estem

This book was released on 2011 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has shown that jealousy is related negatively to self-esteem. In addition, in the athletic world, differences between individuals' ratings of importance for a sport and competence in performing that sport has been associated negatively with their selfesteem. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of sports jealousy on female athletes' discrepancy scores (i.e., the difference between athletic competence and athletic importance scores), which in turn was posited to be related to their self-esteem. -- From the author's abstract.

Book An Examination of Sources and Multidimensionality of Self confidence in Collegiate Athletes

Download or read book An Examination of Sources and Multidimensionality of Self confidence in Collegiate Athletes written by Moe Machida and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships among selected personality and social factors, sources and different types of confidence in collegiate athletes, using the sport-confidence model (Vealey, 1986; Vealey & Chase, 2008) as a guiding framework. Different types of confidence and sources were found to be associated with different factors. For example, task-involving motivational climate positively predicted athletes' selection of both controllable and uncontrollable sources of confidence, while ego-involving motivational climate did not appear as a significant predictor of both types of sources. Several dimensions of perfectionism(i.e. personal standards, doubts about actions, perceived coach pressure, concern over mistake) appeared as strong predictors of different types of confidence. The results also indicated a link between controllable sources of confidence and the level of confidence. Overall, the results from the present study supported the multidimensionality of athletes' confidence. Practical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
