Book excerpt: In 2005-2006, Governor Perdue of Georgia began the Graduation Coach Initiative to increase student achievement by identifying at-risk students early and providing intervention strategies that would lead to academic success and graduation. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between graduation coaches, academic achievement, and graduation rate in Georgia. The research design used to determine the relationship between graduation coaches, academic achievement, and graduation rate was a quantitative, causal comparative study. Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests did not substantiate a significant relationship between graduation coaches, academic achievement, and graduation rate. Improvements in test score pass rates and graduation rate occurred at statistically similar rates before and after the implementation of the Graduation Coach Initiative except on two occasions. Graduation rates improved at a statistically significant higher rate after the utilization of graduation coaches in urban schools and before the utilization of graduation coaches in suburban schools.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: As result of the dropout problem in the United States and in Georgia, many school systems around the nation have placed much emphasis on reducing the incidents of students dropping out of high school. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the graduation coach program and Georgia's graduation rate of over a 7 year period of time, 2004-2010. The research sought to determine if differences existed between graduation rates pre the induction of the graduation coach programs and post the induction of the graduation coach program when controlling for variables such as, school locale, free and reduced lunch percentages, science achievement data and race and ethnicity percentages. I used quantitative design to gather descriptive statistics and to test differences in means scores pre and post the induction of the graduation coach program. The participants were 343 public high schools in the state of Georgia with pre coach program graduation rates and post coach program graduation rates. The spreadsheet was developed so that pre graduation coach program data and post graduation coach data was easily distinguishable. The data set contained statistical information on all 343 schools with pre and post graduation rate data. The results of this study indicate that graduation rates were statistically significant higher after the induction of the graduation coach program when compared to the period prior to the induction of the graduation coach program. In fact, this advantage persisted across city high schools, rural high schools, suburban high schools, town high schools, metropolitan Atlanta high schools and high schools outside of metropolitan Atlanta. However, when looking at Atlanta Public Schools, Dekalb County Schools and Clayton County Schools, no significant difference was found for Atlanta Public Schools.

Book excerpt: Until graduation coaches were added to all Georgia high schools for the 2006-2007 school year, the state of Georgia had one of the lowest graduation rates in the United States. After the high school graduation coaches were found to be successful in decreasing the dropout rate, coaches were added at the middle school level beginning in the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the middle school graduation coach on the attendance and the math and reading CRCT scores of the at-risk student. A control group of at-risk students that did not receive treatment was compared to the experimental group that received treatment from the middle school graduation coach during the 2008-2009 school year. The pretest and posttest math and reading CRCT scores and attendance were analyzed using an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine if the middle school graduation coach had a significant effect on the at-risk students. The hypotheses that the graduation coach would have an effect on the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade at-risk students' attendance and math and reading CRCT scores were rejected because the ANCOVA found that any significant increases or decreases were not due to the effect of the middle school graduation coach. Analysis of gender was completed using a paired t-test and found significant increases in the math and reading CRCT scores of males in the experimental group and the reading CRCT scores of females in the control group.

Book excerpt: I have always been a bit outspoken; I like to think of myself as just being direct. I must justifiably state that my actions were, in part, due to my distaste for unfair treatment of people and hypocrisy. I moved to a small town in Georgia from a city up north, and the culture shock in itself was dramatic. For instance, upon speaking out at a board of education meeting about the lack of student academic achievement, I discovered parents were in an uproar over cheerleading. Huh! This is in a town where sports often meant more than a good education; that is, of course, until the season is over. But I digress. After this meeting, one of the assistant superintendents approached me and asked if I would consider representing the district at a state meeting and provide a parents perspective. Of course, I said yes. This is the point in which God opens the door; I rode to the meeting with a faculty member, and during the two-hour drive, we both became aware that my new landlord was her father. Well, that gave us a lot to talk about, and ultimately, she became my manager in a position where I would be required to help students remain in school and graduate. This was familiar and fulfilling ground for me because I had just closed my NJ business, a business in which I worked with at-risk students. I must love young people because my salary was slashed by 65 percent, but I saw it as a door to a new career. Honestly, I needed an income since I no longer had my business, and helping others was something I enjoyed doing. I was in the midst of obtaining my BS degree in Psychology, and this position would give me another level of hands-on experience so that I could move into individual counseling once I completed school with my masters degree.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Complete College Georgia (CCG) is an initiative that has the University System of Georgia institutions strategizing ways to develop plans that will increase the number of college graduates by the year 2020. Governor Nathan Deal has indicated that graduation rates need to increase from 42% to 60% within the next 7 years. With the anticipation of approximately 20% more students graduating to meet the 250,000 target, a closer look is needed at how an additional 50,000 graduates can be produced to make this goal a reality. To fulfill this goal, there needs to be an increase of approximately 7,143 graduates each year for the next few years. This means approximately a 3% increase in students graduating each year. Under the paradigm of retention, progression, and graduation (RPG) and CCG, this descriptive research study used a questionnaire to collect data from academic advisors regarding how they plan to approach the mandate in an effort to support Governor Deal’s plan to increase the graduation rate in the state of Georgia. The findings of the study indicate that both faculty and professional academic advisors support that there are two key elements which are strong factors in obtaining RPG. One is when students come to college academically prepared to do college work and the other is having an intrinsic motivation to learn. Collectively, advisors recommend a stronger high school curriculum that will produce scholarly students. Equally divided were results on funding, revealing 50% colleges from the state should be based on enrollment while the other 50% indicate funding should be based on the number of graduates an institution has per term (performance-base). Finally, this study gave academic advisors a voice. The disconnect between policy makers and implementers of the policies is palpable. Academic advisors are valuable and significant in fulfilling the RPG and CCG initiatives.

Book excerpt: With an increase in high-stakes testing, educators continue to search for the best methodologies for assisting students in maximizing academic achievement and successful completion of graduation requirements including mandatory tests for high school graduation. At the time of this study, students graduating from Georgia high schools were required to pass five academic subject area tests in order to receive a high school diploma. Psychometric theory, social cognitive theory, and cognitive behavioral theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. Students from a rural high school in Georgia comprised the sample. This quantitative study employed a posttest-only control group design with randomization. Students who had failed at least one of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) were randomly placed into control and treatment groups. Students in the treatment group participated in an 8-session group guidance program, Student Success Skills. Control and treatment groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U tests for math, social studies and English language arts. The results of this study found no significant difference between the groups' test scores.
