Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of participation in physical fitness programs on the self-perceived level of job performance of Oregon public university employees. A volunteer sample of 344 fulltime public university employees responded to the specifically designed questionnaire. Job performance was measured by job satisfaction, work productivity, general health attitude, and university commitment as positive indicators, and absences due to illness as a negative indicator. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and the Scheffe test. Public university employees tended to exercise by themselves rather than participate in the university physical fitness program and were generally involved in greater frequency of exercise; however, a considerable number were not involved in regular exercise. Male public university employees participated in more active physical fitness programs while the female employees participated in less active programs. University employees within the 34 to 54 age range were more actively involved in physical fitness programs than those in the younger or older age ranges. Popular choices of exercise activities were individual exercises. Participation in physical fitness activities had a positive effect on higher self-perceived levels of job performance, particularly in general health attitude; however, it was not substantiated that participation in physical fitness activities does affect job satisfaction, work productivity, university commitment, and absenteeism.

Book excerpt: Organizations are increasingly investing in their employees' health in hopes of positive outcomes. Some organizations provide their employees with on-site fitness facilities to use at little to no cost. However, some employees do not take advantage of the wellness initiative; some even choose to exercise off-site at what may be a less-convenient and costlier location. The purpose of this study is to determine why some are, or are not, utilizing an organization's fitness center as well as investigate outcomes associated with using on- and off-site fitness facilities. Participants (N = 218) who were full-time employees at a university completed an online survey and reported their perceived organizational support, job satisfaction, absenteeism, work engagement, exercise self-identity, locus of control, and use of on- and off-site fitness facilities. It was predicted that exercise would be positively associated with desired employee outcomes and that those who utilized off-site fitness facilities would report higher levels of job satisfaction and work engagement, and lower levels of absenteeism, compared to their coworkers who used the on-site facilities. Results of a binary logistic regression analysis, bivariate correlations, and multivariate analysis of variance did not support the majority of the proposed hypotheses. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Research aim: This research has been intended to study and evaluate the relationship between the level of physical training, stress, job satisfaction and the quality of life. It has been endeavored to read different articles and international journals displayed by various specialists and researchers regarding the impact of physical training on stress level, quality of life and job satisfaction. The methodology has been prepared with sources of data and sampling techniques. It selected 120 participants and received 92.5 percent response rate, measurement items of each factor being fixed with valid source, quantitative & qualitative methods for data collection such as questionnaire and open questions. All data collected are found reliable. Findings from data analysis are that people who train at a frequency of around 0 to 2 times per week have a moderate working hours per week, while people who train at a frequency ranged from 5 to 7 times per week have a higher load of working hours. Nevertheless, people who train more than 7 times per week have lower working hours. The scale of fitness reached by people who train 0 to 2 times per week is low which is normal comparing with people who enjoy more training hours per week. Concerning the stress level, the findings reveal that the average of stress does not really differ from a specific training hour category to another, since it is almost the same level of stress. This also applies to the job satisfaction level that is almost stable in all categories of training hours. However, additional hours of training per week are reflected in an increase of the general quality of life. Discussions on findings of data analysis and outcomes of the literature review are made and conclusions are drawn that physical activity does not have direct impacts on job satisfaction, as some of the non-satisfied employees may train regularly. It has no impact on stress level either.
