Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses the panel data of energy consumption and GDP for 82 countries from 1972 to 2002. Based on the income levels defined by the World Bank, the data are divided into four categories: low income group, lower middle income group, upper middle income group, and high income group. We employ the GMM-SYS approach for the estimation of the panel VAR model in each of the four groups. Afterwards, the causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth is tested and ascertained. We discover: (a) in the low income group, there exists no causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth; (b) in the middle income groups (lower and upper middle income groups), economic growth leads energy consumption positively; (c) in the high income group countries, economic growth leads energy consumption negatively. After further in-depth analysis of energy related data, the results indicate that, in the high income group, there is a great environmental improvement as a result of more efficient energy use and reduction in the release of CO2. However, in the upper middle income group countries, after the energy crisis, the energy efficiency declines and the release of CO2 rises. Since there is no evidence indicating that energy consumption leads economic growth in any of the four income groups, a stronger energy conservation policy should be pursued in all countries.

Book excerpt: This study examines the causal links between energy consumption (EC) and economic development, as measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for four Balkan countries (i.e. Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania) during the period 1980-2009. Energy is a key source of economic growth because many production and consumption activities involve energy as a basic input. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether energy conservation policies may be pursued without adversely affecting economic development. The Granger Causality test results using Vector Auto Regression (VAR) estimates and the Error Correction Model imply that there is a one-way causality running from GDP to EC for Greece. This means that increase in economic growth requires enormous consumption of total energy and energy conservation policies do not harm economic growth. On the other hand, evidence show unidirectional causal links running from EC to GDP for Bulgaria and Romania. In this case, energy consumption can be viewed as a leading indicator of economic growth for these two Balkan countries, which means that energy conservation policies are likely to affect economic growth. Finally, empirical results for Albania suggest that EC and GDP are independent, which favours neutrality hypothesis. Therefore, energy conservation policies may not effect economic growth.

Many development indicators are strongly related to per-capita energy consumption. Fossil fuel is the most conventional source of energy but also increases greenhouse gas emissions. The economic development of many countries has come at the cost of the environment. However, it should not be presumed that a reconciliation of the two is not possible. The nexus concept is the interconnection between the resource energy, water, food, land, and climate. Such interconnections enable us to address trade-offs and seek synergies among them. Energy, water, food, land, and climate are essential resources of our natural environment and support our quality of life. Competition between these resources is increasing globally and is exacerbated by climate change. Improving resilience and securing resource availability would require improving resource efficiency. Many policies and programs are announced nationally and internationally for replacing the conventional mode and also emphasizing on conservation of fossil fuels and reuse of exhausted energy, so a gap in implications and outcomes can be broadly traced by comparing the data. This book aims to highlight problems and solutions related to conventional energy utilization, formation, and multitudes of ecological impacts and tools for the conservation of fossil fuels. The book also discusses modern energy services as one of the sustainable development goals and how the pressure on resource energy disturbs the natural flows. The recent advances in alternative energy sources and their possible future growth are discussed and on how conventional energy leads to greenhouse gas formation, which reduces energy use efficiency. The different policies and models operating is also addressed, and the gaps that remained between them. Climate change poses a challenge for renewable energy, and thus it is essential to identify the factors that would reduce the possibility of relying on sustainable energy sources. The distinction between common factors and idiosyncratic components using principal component analysis allows to distinguish between developments on an international and a national level as drivers of the long-run relationship. Indeed, cointegration between the common components of the underlying variables indicates that international developments dominate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and real GDP. Furthermore, the results suggest that energy consumption is price-inelastic. Causality tests indicate the presence of a bi-directional.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates the relationships between energy consumption and economic growth in Switzerland over the period 1950-2010. We apply bounds testing techniques to different energy types separately. Robustness tests are performed by including additional variables and restricting the analysis to the period after 1970. The results show that there exist robust long run relationships going from real GDP towards heating oil and electricity consumption. The relationship between heating oil and GDP is in fact bi-directional, although weaker from heating oil towards GDP. When investigating the period 1970-2010 only, the estimate of the long run elasticity of GDP with respect to electricity loses its statistical significance and that for heating oil becomes negative. Those results imply a possible decoupling between GDP growth and energy consumption, so that energy conservation policies would not have a negative impact on Swiss economic growth.

We employ Pedroni's (1999, 2004) panel cointegration test to determine if such a long-run relationship exists. Westerlund's (2006) cointegration test for panel data is used to estimate the slopes of the long-run relationship variables. These findings provide empirical guidance for policies to promote energy conservation and efficiency. Cointegration between the two variables is found to exist in both directions. This paper discusses the energy dependence of some countries and describes potential implementation of energy conservation policies in others.

This study has examined the time series data and attempt to analyze long term relationship and causal relation between energy consumption and economic growth. The Granger causality test, Augmented Dickey Fuller test and ordinary least square (with BLUE) properties have used to examine the relationship. The regression holds BLUE properties and the variables are co-integrated, there is linear gap between variables. There exists causal relationship between variables. The empirical result shows that the technology, government development expenditure, price and GDP are the most prominent explaining variables. The Technology and government development expenditure hold significant positive relationship with the energy consumption. The price and GDP growth rate hold mixed relation with significant explaining power. However, the inflation rate, exchange rate, value added tax hold less power to explain energy consumption.

We show that the combination of disaggregation into specific fuels and time variation gives more nuanced results than the alternatives for the U.S. Specifically, we find that the Granger causal relationship between total energy and real U.S. GDP is bi-directional through much of the 1990s (the feedback hypothesis) but uni-directional running from real U.S. GDP to energy consumption in the 2000s (the conservation hypothesis). Similar pattern of changes was observed in the causal relationship between coal consumption and real U.S. GDP. Oil consumption largely supports the feedback hypothesis, especially after 2009. Natural gas consumption shows a brief period supporting the conservation hypothesis in the early-to-mid 2000s, but primarily supports the neutrality hypothesis that natural gas consumption and economic growth are independent.
