Book excerpt: The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between (a) racial/ethnic matching between African American clients and their counselors (i.e., Black, White, and non-Black racial/ethnic minority counselors) and therapeutic outcomes (i.e., change in symptoms, treatment length, and premature termination), (b) while also controlling for the potential influences of client (i.e., initial distress level, family and social support, and socioeconomic status) and counselor (i.e., experience level) characteristics. Change in symptomology on specific domains of functioning (i.e., Depression, Generalized Anxiety, Academic Distress, and Distress Index) was assessed using the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms-34 (i.e., CCAPS-34; Locke et al., 2012). The change in symptomology was classified into one of three categories (i.e., improvement, no change, and deterioration). An archival data set that consisted of client data from the 2011-2012 academic year contributed by 120 university and college counseling centers in the U.S. that were participating members of the Center for Collegiate Mental Health was used. The sample sizes for the analyses were: 348 clients for change in functioning analyses, 1,418 clients for treatment length analyses, and 2,024 clients for premature termination analyses. The findings indicated that after controlling for the covariates, clients who were matched with White counselors were more likely to experience deterioration in overall distress symptoms, rather than no change in symptoms, compared to those who were matched to Black counselors. Also, those clients who were matched with White counselors were more likely to prematurely terminate their counseling sessions, compared to those who were matched to Black counselors or non-Black racial/ethnic minority counselors. The findings from this study may assist researchers and university counseling center staff in understanding the potential influence of ethnic matching on outcomes and service utilization for African American clients. Research findings about therapist effects are mixed. In this study positive psychology variables, hope and optimism, were evaluated with client outcome. The sample for this study consisted of 43 graduate-level counselor trainees in the first or second practicum semester and their adult clients in a university's community counseling clinic. Results revealed no statistically significant relationships between student counselors' hope and optimism and client outcomes. Post hoc analysis of student hope and their post-graduation expectations, revealed statistically significant relationships. Implications for counselor educators are presented along with areas for future research.

The term "therapeutic interaction" focuses on the relationship between the counselor and the client, and is often ignored in client outcome research. Counselor specific contributions to the therapeutic process are called therapist characteristics may be an innovative way to assess how counselors' impact clients' outcomes in counseling. For the purposes of this study administering the Five Factor Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle and the Outcome Questionnaire to master's level student counselors assessed therapist characteristics. The Outcome Questionnaire was administered to clients at a community-counseling clinic at two points and a delta score was calculated to create the variable "client outcome." In order to test the research hypotheses, 70 master's level counseling students completed both the Five Factor Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle and the Outcome Questionnaire. These scores were then matched with master's level counseling students' client delta scores, which created the dependent variable. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicated no statistically significant relationship; therefore the null hypotheses were accepted as the constructs student counselor wellness and client outcomes were not related. Results of the study were summarized and discussed, limitations of the study were explored and recommendations for future research were proposed.

Above and beyond contributions from the client, therapist, and therapy process, contextual factors may have a unique impact on the outcomes a person achieves in psychotherapy. At a contextual level, college counseling centers often make key administrative decisions that have the potential to systematically affect their clients outcomes in psychotherapy. The current project used data collected through the Center for Collegiate Mental Health, a practice-research network with over 500 participating college and university counseling centers. Clients symptoms were measured on the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS), a multidimensional instrument designed for repeated assessment in collegiate mental health settings. The final sample contained 105 centers, 1,601 therapists, and 29,028 clients, and outcome was operationalized as the latent difference score between CCAPS subscale scores at the beginning and end of treatment. Multilevel modeling was used to estimate the percent of the variance in outcome accounted for by the specific counseling center, and further sought to explain that center effect by examining the role of a number of specific administrative policies and characteristics like specific services, session limits, student to staff ratios, etc. (after controlling for key client variables). Results found a relatively small center effect, ranging from 1.50% (social anxiety subscale) to 3.32% (hostility subscale). Significant predictors of these center effects were treatment length, initial symptom severity, and the average initial symptom severity at a center, while the majority of other center variables examined were non-significant. This has potentially wide-ranging implications for counseling center policies and resource allocation.
