Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.

Book excerpt: Popular models of traditional student persistence show a positive relationship to social and academic integration at the learning institution. However, non-traditional students are less integrated socially and academically and are more likely to leave school for reasons beyond the institution's control. Pajares (2002) linked self-efficacy beliefs to academic self-regulation and found that students who believe they are capable of performing the task at hand use more cognitive strategies, work harder, persist longer, and find ways around obstacles. This field study examined popular models of student persistence for traditional and for non-traditional students, along with three years of attrition records at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Dickson, Tennessee. It is hypothesized that career decision self-efficacy (the degree to which a student feels confident in his or her choice of training program) is predictive of institutional integration and student success in career/technical education.

Book excerpt: This study explored the differences between career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and perceived career barriers of students enrolled in the applied technology program compared to those enrolled in a college transfer program at a southeastern urban community college. Participants in the ex-post facto cross-sectional survey included 787 full and part-time students at the community college. There were three research questions: (1) Are there differences in mean scores of CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs by demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, first-generational, employment, full and part-time student status)? (2) What is the predictive value of these demographic variables on CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? (3) Is there a relationship between CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form and Career Barriers Inventory-Revised were administered to participants and data were analyzed using two sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression models. There were significant differences between applied technology and college transfer students in terms of perception of career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy. The applied technology students, who tended to be older, had higher career decision-making self-efficacy scores than the college transfer students and that did not change across the other demographic variables (gender, etc). The college transfer students, who tended to be younger, had higher perception of career barriers scores, and this did not change across demographic variables. Future research using a qualitat.

Book excerpt: A category of relational influences that continues to remain relatively unexplored in the career development context is that of intimate partnership. The present study proposed relationship status (i.e., married vs. dating) and perceived quality of intimate relationship (high vs. low) as variables that can be implicated in the prediction of career decision-making self-efficacy. A total of 68 in-relationship post-secondary female students (20 married, 48 dating) were recruited for participation. Hierarchical multiple regression revealed that, after accounting for age, relationship status and perceived relationship quality together accounted for statistically significant variance in career decision-making self-efficacy for both groups of in-relationship women. However, perceived relationship quality added to the prediction of career decision-making self-efficacy over and above the contribution of relationship status. The discussion offers explanations of the findings, describes the study’s limitations, and highlights the significance of the study’s outcomes to career counselling research and practice. Participants included undergraduate students enrolled in the Career Development (COUN 105) class and comparison group students enrolled in Introductory Psychology (PSYX 100), and Intimate and Family Relationship (COUN 295) classes at The University of Montana. Students were assessed at the beginning and the end of the Spring and Fall semesters, 2010 by using the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSE-SF; Betz & Taylor, 1983), Career Orientation scale, Career Decision Scale (Osipow et al., 1976), and Decisional Process Inventory (Hartung, 1994). The main purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine whether a career development course offered at The University of Montana would have a positive, neutral, or negative effect on career decision-making, self-efficacy, and other career decision making processes among undergraduate students. Based on (MANOVA) results, COUN 105 students significantly increased their sense of career self-efficacy as a function of the course. Based on these results, it was recommended for the development and implementation of career courses for undecided undergraduates become mandatory.

Book excerpt: A review of current literature indicates the existence of a dynamic theoretical intersection between identity, self-efficacy, gender, education, and socioeconomic status (SES). To facilitate an understanding of that dynamic, differences in academic self-efficacy, career self-efficacy, and psychosocial identity development among freshmen and sophomore female college students (n = 275) from differing socioeconomic groups were investigated. Class and gender inequities in the educational system and the world of work are also discussed, illustrating their affect on individual identity development, and on academic and career self-efficacy. Due to societal oppression and the lack of privileges otherwise afforded to individuals from higher SES groups, it was hypothesized that women from lower SES groups would experience lower academic self-efficacy, career self-efficacy, and psychosocial identity development, particularly when adjusting to a higher SES dominated college environment. Participants completed three measures in addition to demographic questions used for determining SES. Administered measures included the Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status (OMEIS; Adams, Shea, & Fitch, 1979), the short form of the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale (CDMSE-SF; Betz & Taylor, 2001), and the College Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (CASES; Owen & Froman, 1988). SES was determined using a combination of annual family income, parental occupation, and parental education level. The use of a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-tests revealed significant differences for female students in the lowest SES group when compared to female students in higher SES groups on measures of both career self-efficacy and academic self-efficacy. A chi-square analysis was used to determine differences in identity development among SES groups; findings were mixed. For example, despite the lowest SES group having the largest number of female students occupy the highest identity.

Book excerpt: Family support and gender are important variables for understanding an individual's career development behavior particularly their ability to confidently complete career related tasks. Despite the growing literature examining family support and gender influences on the career decision-making self-efficacy of college students in western countries such as the U.S. and Europe, little research has been conducted with non-western countries such as Kenya. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between career decision-making self-efficacy and family support factors of Moi University students. The career decision-making self-efficacy scale short-form (CDMSES-SF; Betz, Klein, & Taylor, 1996) measured career decision-making self-efficacy, and family support factors were measured by the family influence scale (FIS; Fouad et al., 2010). Students reported high CDMSE, but gender did not significanty predict students' CDMSE. Out of the four family support factors, only informational support and financial support significantly predicted students' CDMSE. Moreover, there was no statistically significant relationship on the interaction between gender and informational support and gender and financial support. These findings indicate the important role that family support plays in the CDMSE of their children.
