Book excerpt: In Reclaiming the Game, William Bowen and Sarah Levin disentangle the admissions and academic experiences of recruited athletes, walk-on athletes, and other students. In a field overwhelmed by reliance on anecdotes, the factual findings are striking--and sobering. Anyone seriously concerned about higher education will find it hard to wish away the evidence that athletic recruitment is problematic even at those schools that do not offer athletic scholarships. Thanks to an expansion of the College and Beyond database that resulted in the highly influential studies The Shape of the River and The Game of Life, the authors are able to analyze in great detail the backgrounds, academic qualifications, and college outcomes of athletes and their classmates at thirty-three academically selective colleges and universities that do not offer athletic scholarships. They show that recruited athletes at these schools are as much as four times more likely to gain admission than are other applicants with similar academic credentials. The data also demonstrate that the typical recruit is substantially more likely to end up in the bottom third of the college class than is either the typical walk-on or the student who does not play college sports. Even more troubling is the dramatic evidence that recruited athletes "underperform:" they do even less well academically than predicted by their test scores and high school grades. Over the last four decades, the athletic-academic divide on elite campuses has widened substantially. This book examines the forces that have been driving this process and presents concrete proposals for reform. At its core, Reclaiming the Game is an argument for re-establishing athletics as a means of fulfilling--instead of undermining--the educational missions of our colleges and universities.

A comparison between the academic performance of male and female student-athletes (n = 78) and non-athletes (n = 77) from an NCAA Division III institution in New England was conducted using the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ), GPA, and SAT scores. A total of eight 2 x 2 independent groups factorial ANOVAs were conducted to examine whether or not differences existed between male and female student-athletes and non-athletes with regard to GPA, SAT scores, and the six NCQ subscales. Correlations between the six NCQ subscales, GPA, and SAT scores were conducted for all participants. Male student-athletes reported a mean GPA of 3.08 + .41; male non-athletes reported 3.06 + .57; female student-athletes reported 3.11 + .47; female non-athletes reported 3.38 + .46. Book excerpt: The subcommittee met to discuss and hear testimony on Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a law designed to prohibit sex discrimination in intercollegiate athletics at federally funded education programs or activities. Among issues addressed were the means by which universities demonstrate that they are in compliance with Title IX as well as the achievements and benefits of the legislation in the 23 years since it was passed. Witnesses who appeared in panels to testify included House Representatives Hastert and Collins and representatives of the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Education. Also appearing were representatives of universities including the president of Brown University, Vartan Gregorian, and president of Eastern Illinois University, David L. Jorns. They were either troubled by the direction of Title IX enforcement or felt that current enforcement allows an appropriate level of flexibility in achieving compliance. Representatives of several organizations in the athletic community appeared including the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, the National Wrestling Coaches Association, Women's Sports Foundation, the College Football Association. Book excerpt: Little to no research has been conducted examining the factors contributing to athletic department competitive success in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Several studies have linked student-athlete institutional choice factors to academic factors, while Division III student-athletes have indicated that both athletic and academic programs are important in their college choice (Goss, Jubenville, & Oregan, 2006; Konnert & Giese, 1987; National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2008; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2011; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2016). The NCAA Division III philosophy states that student-athletes should be integrated into the whole of the institution, not treated differently than non-student-athletes, and that admissions standards should be the same for student-athletes as they are for non-student-athletes (Stubbeman & Cooper, 2015). This research examined the relationship between institutional academic profile and athletic department competitive success. Academic profile was measured through institutional selectivity (acceptance rates), caliber of incoming students (ACT/SAT scores), four-year graduation rates, and retention rates (first to second year of enrollment). Athletic department competitive success was measured by the institution's placement in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup (LSDC). Spearman rank correlation was used to examine each independent variable against the institution's points earned in the LSDC. Positive relationships were found between each independent variable and points earned in the LSDC - ranging from -.306 to .563. These positive relationships present various implications and considerations for institutional administration and coaches to consider in recruiting student-athletes and setting expectations for competitive success.

Book excerpt: A critical look at the tension between the larger role of the university and the commercialization of college sports Unwinding Madness is the most comprehensive examination to date of how the NCAA has lost its way in the governance of intercollegiate athletics—and why it is incapable of achieving reform and must be replaced. The NCAA has placed commercial success above its responsibilities to protect the academic primacy, health and well-being of college athletes and fallen into an educational, ethical, and economic crisis. As long as intercollegiate athletics reside in the higher education environment, these programs must be academically compatible with their larger institutions, subordinate to their educational mission, and defensible from a not-for-profit organizational standpoint. The issue has never been a matter of whether intercollegiate athletics belongs in higher education as an extracurricular offering. Rather, the perennial challenge has been how these programs have been governed and conducted. The authors propose detailed solutions, starting with the creation of a new national governance organization to replace the NCAA. At the college level, these proposals will not diminish the revenue production capacity of sports programs but will restore academic integrity to the enterprise, provide fairer treatment of college athletes with better health protections, and restore the rights and freedoms of athletes, which have been taken away by a professionalized athletics mentality that controls the cost of its athlete labor force and overpays coaches and athletic directors. Unwinding Madness recognizes that there is no easy fix to the problems now facing college athletics. But the book does offer common sense, doable solutions that respect the rights of athletes, protects their health and well-being while delivering on the promise of a bona fide educational degree program.

Book excerpt: Using a quantitative approach, the researcher investigated the attitudes of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III (D3) men’s (n = 69) and women’s (n = 53) sports student-athletes (SAs). This study aimed to examine the current attitudes of male, female, and non-binary NCAA D3 SAs towards male, female, and non-binary strength and conditioning coaches (SCCs). Attitudes were assessed for 121 participants via a 12- question modified Attitudes of Athletes Toward Male versus Female Coaches Questionnaire (AAMFC-Q; Magnusen & Rhea, 2009) consisting of Likert-scaled questions ranking feelings towards a described, gendered SCC. The researcher determined there to be no significant interactions between gendered sport and condition, suggesting that previously noted SCC gender preferences no longer prevail in D3 athletics. However, via main effects significant differences between gendered sport was noted when participants were prompted with considering how they would feel about the hypothetical coach’s ability to motivate and encourage them. Additionally, significant differences between conditions were noted in items examining the participants’ ability to take punishment from the hypothetical coach and, when directly asked if they preferred the gender of the described coach. The findings of the present study are pertinent to practitioners and administrators working with SCCs and SAs of varying gender identities. Professionals involved in the strength and conditioning training of D3 student-athletes can use the results of the current study to inform hiring decisions, when educating staff and athletes, and to better understand the athletes' feelings towards SCCs. Additionally, involved personnel should consider this evidence of the prevailing existence of hegemonic masculinity in athletics and evaluate how they may work to dissuade the continuance of such.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The current study was designed to investigate if differences existed in the academic performance of singlesport and multi-sport intercollegiate distance runners. All NCAA Division III institutions in New England offering both men's and women's varsity cross country and track and field (N = 37) were invited to participate in the current study; five institutions provided information on student-athletes. Academic performance was based on Grade Point Average (GPA) and credit hours (CH) obtained during the 2013-2014 academic year. Single-sport student-athletes were defined as only participating on the varsity cross country team, while mUlti-sport student-athletes were defined as participating on both varsity cross country and track and field teams. No significant (p > .05) interaction was found between gender, semester and type of student-athlete for GPA and CR. A significant (p > .05) interaction was found between type of student-athlete and gender for GPA and CR. Male multi-sport student-athletes reported a higher GPA (3.24 ± 0.47) than male single-sport student-athletes (2.90 ± 0.89). Also, single-sport female student-athletes (14.44 ± 3.01) reported earning more CR than single-sport male student-athletes (12.85 ± 3.79). No significant (p > .05) interaction was found between type of student-athlete and semester. Additionally, no significant (p > .05) interaction was found between gender and semester. The researcher concluded that participation in multiple intercollegiate sports influences the academic performance of male intercollegiate distance runners. Participation on multiple intercollegiate athletic teams did not impact the academic performance of female student-athletes.
