Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of Pain to Weather: Studied During Eleven Years of a Case of Traumatic Neuralgia I should perhaps state that except as concerns pail the observer is in admirable health, that his attack: are so definite as to coming and going, as to creatc little difficulty in this direction, and that from hi: former position as instructor in certain scientifit branches at West Point, he is well qualified by train ing to pursue this difficult study. The weather re ports of the signal office and his own, or the daily observations of others, have enabled him, from time to time, to relate these to his record of neuralgia, and by this method he has avoided the constant presence of daily thought as to what was about to happen in consequence of atmospheric changes. I may add that I never knew any man more free from unwhole some attention to his own ailments. Most of what I learned from our former study, still stands unaltered by this much longer record; but there have been some fresh and suggestive gains in the relation of pain to meals, to daily barometric changes, and to magnetic conditions. The diagrams are readily un derstood in connection with explanations given in the text, except those for the months of November and December, 1877, which we have given as an illustra tion of the method of study, and of the obvious rela tion of storms to pain. Book excerpt: Ask Tom Why is a collection of articles originally written by Tom Skilling for his Chicago Tribune column of the same name. Skilling, who is WGN-TV's chief meteorologist, answers questions covering all topics pertaining to weather, the sky, and our environment. Split into three sections, the book covers storms and inclement weather; the sun, moon, and sky; and temperature — all expressed with the authority and accuracy of Chicago's favorite meteorologist. Skilling's nearly forty years in the meteorology field make him one of the most trusted voices in a city known for its erratic weather. From the mundane to the anomalous, Skilling explains all things weather in a way that is easy for readers of any age to understand. Ask Tom Why is the first collection of its kind, and a fantastic read for weather enthusiasts, and anyone who grew up reading, listening, and watching Tom Skilling.

Book BELIEFS OF WEATHER INFLUENCE AND CHRONIC PAIN A PILOT STUDY WITH AN APP WITH GEOPOSITIONING TECHNOLOGY

Download or read book BELIEFS OF WEATHER INFLUENCE AND CHRONIC PAIN A PILOT STUDY WITH AN APP WITH GEOPOSITIONING TECHNOLOGY written by Guadalupe Molinari and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background& aims. The extent to which weather influences pain symptoms has created great interest over the past decades. Yet,results in this regard are still inconclusive (Macfarlane et al., 2010; Bossema et al.,2013; De Blecourt et al., 1993; Fors& Sexton, 2002; Smedslund et al., 2013; DelirHaghighi et al., 2017), arguably due to methodological shortcomings (i.e., cross-sectional and non-ecological research). Additionally, Redelmeier&Tversky (1996) suggested that this widespread belief that weather influences pain is partly explained by people's tendency to perceive non-existing patterns of associations between variables. The aim of this pilot study is to investigate the influence of weather on Fibromyalgia using an ecological momentary approach. The individualsu2019 beliefs about the relationship between weather and pain will be calculated and used for discussion. Method. The u201cEmotional Monitoru201d, which includes geopositioning technology, was used to monitor pain levels, beliefs, and weather outcomes(temperature, pressure, and humidity) in real time. Participants were 13 fibromyalgia patients and 12 control individuals, who used the app daily during 6 weeks. Results. The correlation between pain and weather outcomes was non-significant in both groups. However, the belief that pain was influenced by weather was high for both groups. Conclusions. The results showed that weather outcomes appear to be unrelated to pain reports. However, the findings confirm Redelmeier conclusions indicating strong beliefs about the relationship between weather and pain. Despite the extent to which these beliefs are associated with poor functioning (i.e., avoidance of activity when the weather is poor) was not investigated here, we suggest that the modification of such beliefs should be addressed in clinical practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us will know physical pain in our lives, but none of us knows when it will come or how long it will stay. Today as much as 10 percent of the population of the United States suffers from chronic pain. It is more widespread, misdiagnosed, and undertreated than any major disease. While recent research has shown that pain produces pathological changes to the brain and spinal cord, many doctors and patients still labor under misguided cultural notions and outdated scientific dogmas that prevent proper treatment, to devastating effect. In The Pain Chronicles, a singular and deeply humane work, Melanie Thernstrom traces conceptions of pain throughout the ages—from ancient Babylonian pain-banishing spells to modern brain imaging—to reveal the elusive, mysterious nature of pain itself. Interweaving first-person reflections on her own battle with chronic pain, incisive reportage from leading-edge pain clinics and medical research, and insights from a wide range of disciplines—science, history, religion, philosophy, anthropology, literature, and art—Thernstrom shows that when dealing with pain we are neither as advanced as we imagine nor as helpless as we may fear. Both a personal meditation and an intellectual exploration, The Pain Chronicles illuminates and makes sense of the all-too-human experience of pain—and confronts with extraordinary grace and empathy its peculiar traits, its harrowing effects, and its various antidotes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of medical science, people have recognized connections between a change in the weather and the appearance of epidemic disease. With today's technology, some hope that it will be possible to build models for predicting the emergence and spread of many infectious diseases based on climate and weather forecasts. However, separating the effects of climate from other effects presents a tremendous scientific challenge. Can we use climate and weather forecasts to predict infectious disease outbreaks? Can the field of public health advance from "surveillance and response" to "prediction and prevention?" And perhaps the most important question of all: Can we predict how global warming will affect the emergence and transmission of infectious disease agents around the world? Under the Weather evaluates our current understanding of the linkages among climate, ecosystems, and infectious disease; it then goes a step further and outlines the research needed to improve our understanding of these linkages. The book also examines the potential for using climate forecasts and ecological observations to help predict infectious disease outbreaks, identifies the necessary components for an epidemic early warning system, and reviews lessons learned from the use of climate forecasts in other realms of human activity.

Book Learning from the Wounded

Download or read book Learning from the Wounded written by Shauna Devine and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly two-thirds of the Civil War's approximately 750,000 fatalities were caused by disease--a staggering fact for which the American medical profession was profoundly unprepared. In the years before the war, training for physicians in the United States was mostly unregulated, and medical schools' access to cadavers for teaching purposes was highly restricted. Shauna Devine argues that in spite of these limitations, Union army physicians rose to the challenges of the war, undertaking methods of study and experimentation that would have a lasting influence on the scientific practice of medicine. Though the war's human toll was tragic, conducting postmortems on the dead and caring for the wounded gave physicians ample opportunity to study and develop new methods of treatment and analysis, from dissection and microscopy to new research into infectious disease processes. Examining the work of doctors who served in the Union Medical Department, Devine sheds new light on how their innovations in the midst of crisis transformed northern medical education and gave rise to the healing power of modern health science.
