Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of Botany to Agriculture: A Lecture Delivered Before the Massachusetts Board of Agriculture, at Barre, Dec, 9, 1872 Mr. Chairman and Ladies and Gentlemen: - There is much reason for gratitude and encouragement in the fact that the general subject of agricultural education need no longer be discussed at the meetings of this Board. That good mental training, some literary culture and familiarity with the laws and phenomena of nature are useful to the farmer, is no longer denied. That chemistry, by revealing the composition of air, water, soils and manures, as well as of plants and animals, has rendered a rational system of agriculture possible, is universally admitted. The chemical force, however, exerts its influence principally upon dead matter, and is subordinate to that other greater mystery which organizes mineral substances into those varied forms of vegetation which clothe the earth with beauty and furnish the indispensable food of animals. Baron von Liebig has said: "The scientific basis of agriculture embraces a knowledge of all the conditions of vegetable life, of the origin of the elements of plants, and of the source from which they derive their nourishment." Professor Lindley also asserts that "good agriculture and horticulture are founded upon the laws of vegetable physiology;" and that "no man deserves the name of gardener who is not master of everything known as to the way in which plants feed, breathe, grow, digest, and have their being." How astonishing and humiliating then to every enlightened American must be the fact that while in Europe almost every university and every large city has its botanic garden for the instruction and entertainment of students and people, there is not in these United States a single general collection of living plants, systematically arranged and adapted to convey any adequate idea of the wonders of the vegetable kingdom. Book Botany for Agricultural Students

Download or read book Botany for Agricultural Students written by John N. Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany for Agricultural Students Although students vary widely in their reasons for studying Botany, the fundamental facts or principles of the subject are not thereby altered. One has considerable freedom, however, in the presentation of the subject to adapt the subject matter to special aims of different classes of students, and especially is this true in courses for agricultural students, since much of the work in Agriculture is based upon the principles of Botany. In the choice of material to illustrate principles and in the presentation of the applications of principles, there is special opportunity to relate courses in Botany to courses in Agriculture. In any elementary course in Botany, regardless of the kind of education the student desires to obtain, the primary aim should be to give the student a notion of the fundamental principles of Botany. This aim should be the guiding one in both recitation and laboratory, determining the trend of discussions in recitation, and the nature of the material and procedure in the laboratory. The primary aim should be accompanied by a secondary aim to relate the subject to the students major line of work. When the relation of the subject to major lines of work is obvious, the student is more likely to appreciate the subject and is thereby put in a favorable mood to study the subject. Even for students who take Botany merely as a part of a general education, it in no way detracts from the course or makes botanical training less efficient to present the practical aspects of the subject. This book is intended for elementary courses in Botany in colleges and universities. In its preparation the aim has been to present the fundamental principles of Botany with emphasis upon the practical application of these principles. The subject matter is presented in two parts, part I being devoted to the study of the structures and functions chiefly of Flowering Plants, and Part II, to the study of the kinds of plants, relationships, Evolution, Heredity, and Plant Breeding. Book excerpt: "The book...is, in fact, a short text on the many practical problems...associated with translating the explosion in basic biotechnological research into the next Green Revolution," explains Economic Botany. The book is "a concise and accurate narrative, that also manages to be interesting and personal...a splendid little book." Biotechnology states, "Because of the clarity with which it is written, this thin volume makes a major contribution to improving public understanding of genetic engineering's potential for enlarging the world's food supply...and can be profitably read by practically anyone interested in application of molecular biology to improvement of productivity in agriculture."

Book Water Relations of Plants and Soils

Download or read book Water Relations of Plants and Soils written by Paul J. Kramer and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1995-07-17 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Relations of Plants and Soils, successor to the seminal 1983 book by Paul Kramer, covers the entire field of water relations using current concepts and consistent terminology. Emphasis is on the interdependence of processes, including rate of water absorption, rate of transpiration, resistance to water flow into roots, soil factors affecting water availability. New trends in the field, such as the consideration of roots (rather than leaves) as the primary sensors of water stress, are examined in detail. Addresses the role of water in the whole range of plant activities Describes molecular mechanisms of water action in the context of whole plants Synthesizes recent scientific findings Relates current concepts to agriculture and ecology Provides a summary of methods
