Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Soils and Fertilizers We have already learned that the soil con tains mainly two classes of materials, humus and mineral elements. We have defined humus as decayed vegetable matter, such as the re mains of plants that were not used by man, but left upon the soil. The elements of a mineral nature are just as essential to the welfare of the plant as the Organic matter, or humus. We will discuss these mineral ele ments from a chemical point of view in our next chapter, but we will now consider them briefly from a phy'sical standpoint. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Rarer Elements This small volume, prepared from material used by the author in a short lecture course given at Yale University, is intended to serve as a convenient handbook in the intro ductory study of the rarer elements; that is, of those elements which are not always taken up in a general course in chemistry. No attempt has been made to, treat any part of the subject exhaustively, but enough references have been given to furnish a point of departure for the student who wishes to investigate for himself. Experimental work has been included except in the case of those elements which are unavailable, either because of their scarcity or because of the difficulty of isolating them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Function and Distribution of Manganese in Plants and Soils The role played by the several elements that occur in plants is a subj ect of much interest, and one that has been investigated for many years. For about a century it has been recognized that mineral substances are essential in the normal growth and development of plants, and are connected in some vital way With the phenomena of life. In addition to the elements essential to growth there are others found to a greater or less extent in all soils. Download or read book The Organic Constituents of Soils Classic Reprint written by Oswald Schreiner and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organic Constituents of Soils The reports on the various phases of soil studies by the investigators who have preceded me in this symposium must have impressed you with the fact that the subject of soil fertility and infertility is by no means a simple matter of arithmetic, which involves only a few of the mineral constituents of the soil. It must also have become clear to you that the problem of soil fertility or infertility has not been solved by the application of these simple arithmetical means based on soil analysis or by the crop statistics accumulated in the years which have elapsed since Liebig first announced his views on soil fertility, which gamed for him for all time the title of "Father of Agricultural Chemistry." It is particularly gratifying to me, since I am to talk to you to-day on the subject of the organic constituents of soils, their chemical nature and other properties, that Liebig is also known as the "Father of Organic Chemistry." To what tremendous proportions and significance in the worlds industries and science this child of his (Organic Chemistry) has grown is familiar to all of you, and I assure you that Liebig, were he to return to-day, would be proud of its parentage. But I fear he would be displeased with his other child, as having made so little progress in the intervening years, although he started it in life strong and virile and full of promise. Up to a few years ago agriculture had not shared in the great impulses which modern science has given to other arts and industries, and the domination of the mineral-requirement theory proposed in the first half of the last century and accepted without adequate proof of its validity is largely responsible for the lack of development in agriculture, commensurate with the enormous strides of other arts and industries under the guidance of modern scientific thought and research. But a new era of scientific inquiry is at hand, and all phases of scientific endeavor are being applied to the solution of the problems connected with soil fertility and infertility - lines of endeavor which were not even known in Liebig's time, but which to-day are well-recognized factors in soil fertility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizer Problems and Analysis of Soils in California The roots of plants do not take up the soil solution Simply as it exists in the soil. Mineral elements may be removed at a faster or slower rate than the water in which these elements are dissolved. The plant Should not be likened to a lamp wick sucking up the soil solution. Roots perform their functions normally only as a result of the activities of healthy liv ing cells, which require a suitable supply of oxygen. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Certain Organic Constituents of Soils in Relation to Soil Fertility The work of isolating and studying the nature of such. Bodies is now in progress, but it is necessarily slow and difficult to accomplish. In the first place, the amount may be very small, and, secondly, the 'composition of the organic matter of the soil is undoubtedly very complex, being made up of many individual organic compounds. The absorptive power of the soil for organic bodies is so very great that the ordinary solvents, such as water, alcohol, chloroform, etc., take out but very minute amounts of organic material, .although this material may be quite soluble when not associated with the soil. The amounts of organic matter in ordinary soils is really. Appreciably large, the average content being as high as per cent for the soil and per cent for the subsoil, as found in thousands of sam ples from all parts of the United States, covering in all 237 types of soil. It Is obvious that this organic matter is of very complex com position, as its properties are quite different in soils from different localities. The amount of nitrogen also is considerable, as much as to per cent, and when we consider that only a small amount of this nitrogen is in the form of ammonium compounds or nitrate and that the larger amount is in organic form it is obvious that the problem Is a very complex one, but one of great agricultural importance. Book The Control of Blowing Soils Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Control of Blowing Soils Classic Reprint written by Edward Elway Free and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Control of Blowing Soils This continual blowing Of small quantities of soil is naturally greater on cultivated fields than elsewhere, as there is no protective covering of vegetation. The reality of the phenomena may be shown by a very simple experiment. If any ordinary glass partly full of water be placed for a few days on a fence (or other support) in the midst of cultivated fields, the water will become muddy from soil which blows into it, and this will occur when the wind movement is only normal. On very windy days the quantity of dust collected will be much greater. The moving of soil by wind and water, and even its final removal into the sea, is not in general harmful. Much good results from this process. Were the soil a stationary thing, and did each partic ular soil grain remain forever in one place, fertility would rapidly decrease. The removal of plant food materials by plants and in the drainage waters would ultimately take from the upper layers Of the soil much of the elements useful to plants. The soil, however, is not stationary; its surface layers are being continually removed by wind and water and the particles carried (mainly by the water) to the sea. In their stead new, unweathered, and unexhausted fragments of the underlying rocks are coming into the soil zone and in their turn are contributing to its fertility. This process of the removal of worn-out soil must of course be properly balanced against the agencies of chemical rock decay and the extraction of nutrients by plants. If the mechanical removal Of soil material be too Slow, there will be an actual chemical exhaustion. If it be too rapid, there will not be time for the necessary weathering and preparation of the rock fragments which appear from below. Both Of these ex tremes occur in nature, the second far more Often than the first, but fortunately both are comparatively rare. Download or read book The Soil in Relation to Health Classic Reprint written by Henry Alexander Miers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soil in Relation to Health Few people are without ideas and opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of soil, but how many of them base their opinions on any real knowledge of the properties of the ground? Owing to the absence of a little special knowledge which does not happen to enter into the conversation or literature of every-day life, many of the ideas prevalent upon these subjects may well be classed with those popular delusions which still cling even to educated minds. Of course there may be, and generally is, a certain element of truth in popular ideas, however erroneous. To take an outside case for example - The knowledge that sulphur is insoluble in water would show the absurdity of placing a piece of sulphur in a dog's drinking water, yet this ceremony is performed in every well-regulated dog-kennel - possibly because it was long ago known that sulphur administered by the mouth or used as an inunction has some curative effect in certain cutaneous diseases of the dog.
