Book Health and Health Care in the New Russia

Download or read book Health and Health Care in the New Russia written by Nataliya Tikhonova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the nature of health and health-care experiences in Russia by comparing societies and communities with different socio-cultural conditions. The unique use of longitudinal data collected over ten years, allows the authors to address key questions on Russians individual experiences of health care and their understanding of its influencing factors. They explore the methods of self treatment and illness prevention in combination with the effects poverty and treatment availability can have on the standards of living for the people surveyed. This pertinent issue follows a time of rapidly worsening health status amongst the Russian population and a grave decline in male life expectancy. The findings are set within the context of experience from Finland and the UK, allowing the authors to explore the challenge of the Russian health-care crisis to Western European models of health status and health care.

Download or read book What is Soviet Now written by Thomas Lahusen and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2008 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists and political scientists wrestle with the challenges faced by Russian officials and public alike in adapting to a market economy and democracy, including the fragility of property rights and elections still rooted in old institutional structures. This book examines the reforms of health and welfare, and the hierarchy of privilege and access, and consider how Putin's statist approach to mythmaking compares to that of previous Soviet and post-Soviet regimes. Historians and anthropologists explore the issue of nostalgia, gender, punishment, belief, and how history itself is being created and perceived today. The book concludes with a journey through the ruined landscape of real socialism.

Book The International Economic Crisis and the Post Soviet States

Download or read book The International Economic Crisis and the Post Soviet States written by Valentina Feklyunina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first, it seemed as if the international financial crisis that broke out in 2008 would have little effect in Russia and the other post-Soviet states. But, by the end of the year, growth was slowing, banks were reluctant to lend, share values had collapsed and unemployment was rising inexorably. The stability of the Putin leadership, it appeared, had been built on the turnaround in economic performance that it had managed to achieve over more than a decade. How would it cope with a sudden reversal? In Ukraine, living standards fell even more sharply. In Belarus, there were fewer obvious signs of economic difficulty, but it could hardly be unaffected by the performance of its major trading partners. Drawing on a wide range of evidence, an international group of scholars address the impact of the international financial crisis in the post-Soviet states and the continuing implications of the crisis for these countries themselves and for the wider world. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics, now known as East European Politics.

Book China s Rise Russia s Fall

Download or read book China s Rise Russia s Fall written by Peter Nolan and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-10-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A lively and well written comparison of economic transformation in China and the USSR/Russia, combining a good knowledge of the Chinese economy with a radical critique of Western transition orthodoxy, this very topical and very controversial book will be useful reading for students, administrators in many countries and international agencies, and business people.' - Michael Ellman, University of Amsterdam `Peter Nolan makes a pungent challenge to conventional wisdom by arguing that the Chinese approach to system reform has been vastly more successful than the shock therapy applied to Russia. His book is based on extensive comparison and deep insight into the political economy of both countries.' - John Toye, Institute of Development Studies, Sussex This book is the first attempt to analyse systematically the dramatic contrast in the results of post-Stalinist reform in China and Russia. It argues that there emerged a 'transition orthodoxy' about how to reform the communist systems of political economy. However, it was deeply flawed. The advice which flowed from this orthodoxy was the primary cause of the Soviet disaster. The decision not to follow it was the main reason for China's enormous success in its reform programme.
