This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CIuster EDZ international conference and workshop on the 'Impact of the excavation disturbed or damaged zone (EDZ) on the performance of radioactive waste geological repositories' was jointly organised by the European Commission (EC) and ESV Euridice EIG, Belgium, in the framework of the EC Cluster Forum (CLub of Underground Storage, TEsting and Research facilities for radioactive waste disposal), in Luxembourg, from 3 to 5 November 2003. The Cluster EDZ conference had three main objectives: 1. to establish the present understanding of the nature and properties of EDZ; 2. to establish the consequences of the EDZ and propose remedial action for the different repository stages (from the design stage to the closure phase); 3. to assess the impact of the EDZ on the long-term performance of geological repositories. The present proceedings include the papers presented at, and the conclusions from, the Cluster EDZ conference and workshop as follows: 1. introductory keynote addresses on the relevance of the EDZ for post-closure safety of deep geological repositories, the conclusions of previous international workshops on the EDZ and the lessons learnt in each of the specific host-rock considered as potential formation to build a deep underground repository for radioactive waste (plastic and indurated clays, crystalIine rock and salt); 2. 12 oral presentations and 19 additional poster presentations; 3. a report from each working group discussion on the four hast-rock formations; and 4. a proposal for generic definitions of excavation disturbed and damaged zones and an overall synthesis and conclusions of the conference and workshop. The Cluster EDZ conference was attended by 145 participants from 20 countries (13 European Union Member States and candidate countries, and Switzerland (associated country to the Euratom research and training programme), six third countries (Canada, Croatia, India, Japan, South Africa and the United States of America)), and the OECD/NEA.

Book Geological Disposal of Carbon Dioxide and Radioactive Waste A Comparative Assessment

Download or read book Geological Disposal of Carbon Dioxide and Radioactive Waste A Comparative Assessment written by Ferenc L. Toth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil fuels will remain the backbone of the global energy economy for the foreseeable future. The contribution of nuclear energy to the global energy supply is also expected to increase. With the pressing need to mitigate climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the fossil energy industry is exploring the possibility of carbon dioxide disposal in geological media. Geological disposal has been studied for decades by the nuclear industry with a view to ensuring the safe containment of its wastes. Geological disposal of carbon dioxide and that of radioactive waste gives rise to many common concerns in domains ranging from geology to public acceptance. In this respect, comparative assessments reveal many similarities, ranging from the transformation of the geological environment and safety and monitoring concerns to regulatory, liability and public acceptance issues. However, there are profound differences on a broad range of issues as well, such as the quantities and hazardous features of the materials to be disposed of, the characteristics of the targeted geological media, the site engineering technologies involved and the timescales required for safe containment at the disposal location. There are ample opportunities to learn from comparisons and to derive insights that will assist policymakers responsible for national energy strategies and international climate policies.

Book Managing Radioactive Waste Safely

Download or read book Managing Radioactive Waste Safely written by Great Britain. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published as part of the managing radioactive waste safely (MRWS) programme, this white paper sets out the UK Government's framework for managing higher activity radioactive waste in the long-term through geological disposal, coupled with safe and secure interim storage and ongoing research and development to support its optimised implementation. It also invites communities to express an interest in opening up, without commitment, discussions with Government on the possibility of hosting a geological disposal facility at some point in the future. In June 2007 the Government published a MRWS consultation document in conjunction with the devolved administrations for Wales and Northern Ireland. Responses to this consultation have been taken into consideration in the development of this white paper. The paper sets out the framework for the future implementation of geological disposal that includes: the approach to compiling and updating the UK Radioactive Waste Inventory (UKRWI) and using it as a basis for discussion with potential host communities; the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's technical approach for developing a geological disposal facility, including the use of a staged implementation approach and ongoing research and development to support delivery. The white paper covers the amount of waste for disposal; preparation and planning for geological disposal; protecting people and the environment: regulation, planning and independent scrutiny; site selection using a voluntarism and partnership approach; the site assessment process; timing and next steps.

Book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization

Download or read book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade significant progress has been achieved in the development of waste characterization and control procedures and equipment as a direct response to ever-increasing requirements for quality and reliability of information on waste characteristics. Failure in control procedures at any step can have important, adverse consequences and may result in producing waste packages which are not compliant with the waste acceptance criteria for disposal, thereby adversely impacting the repository. The information and guidance included in this publication corresponds to recent achievements and reflects the optimum approaches, thereby reducing the potential for error and enhancing the quality of the end product. -- Publisher's description.

Book Protecting Our Environment

  • Author : Janet R. Hunter
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2012-02-01
  • ISBN : 0791482936
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book Protecting Our Environment written by Janet R. Hunter and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes in how the world approaches global environmental problems have occurred since the late 1970s. Countries have become increasingly aware of the "borderless" nature of environmental issues, i.e., that production and consumption in one country can spill over to affect another country's environment. Protecting Our Environment considers the successes that have been achieved in the European Union (EU), as well as issues the Union still faces regarding the protection of the environment in the future. Authors Janet R. Hunter and Zachary A. Smith identify the factors that have allowed the EU to form a successful environmental regime, including the development of the environmental management approach and the principles upon which it is based. They examine in detail the challenges that have been encountered in the implementation of environmental programs, and the solutions that have been developed to address those challenges. Also considered is how economic development and environmental protection have been reconciled within the EU. By analyzing the successful example of the EU, Protecting Our Environment provides a model for a contemporary approach to global environmental problems.

Book Disposition of High Level Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel

Download or read book Disposition of High Level Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-05 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused attention by world leaders is needed to address the substantial challenges posed by disposal of spent nuclear fuel from reactors and high-level radioactive waste from processing such fuel. The biggest challenges in achieving safe and secure storage and permanent waste disposal are societal, although technical challenges remain. Disposition of radioactive wastes in a deep geological repository is a sound approach as long as it progresses through a stepwise decision-making process that takes advantage of technical advances, public participation, and international cooperation. Written for concerned citizens as well as policymakers, this book was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and waste management organizations in eight other countries.
