This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Register of the Parish of St. Peter and S. Kevin, Dublin, 1669-1761 The district in which the old churches of S.Peter and S. Kevin were situated is one of much interest in the history of Dublin. Long surrounded by the crowded streets of the modern city, there lay when the Normans came to Ireland an area not half-a-mile from north to south by barely a quarter from east to west which then contained five parish churches. We know nothing directly of its people, but the fact that of these five churches four certainly were Irish foundations, assures us that here was the ancient Irish city.S. Patrick's, S.Bridget s, S. Kevin's are undoubted Irish dedications. S.Michael s-of-the-Pool, whether or not an Irish dedication, is proved by its Round Tower, which stood till late in the eighteenth century, to have been an Irish foundation. Thus, if the tradition be true that S. Patrick founded his church in Dublin city, this district must have been that early Irish Dublin, rather than the Norse town nearer the Liffey, in which there is no Early Irish church. On a ridge to the north stood the fortified Ostman or Norse town. Outside its walls the deep hollow, through which the stream of the Poddle flows, separated it from the Irish town. This hollow is very noticeable at the junction of S. Werburgh and S. Bride Streets, but the level of the surface now is much above the ancient one, the Poddle now flowing in a deep tunnel some twenty feet below the present surface. From the old level of the stream. Sheep or Ship Street rose by a steep ascent towards oldS. Peters church, which was hence called S.Peter de Monte, or of t.he Hill. This old church stood some distance to the north of the present church, between the north part of Aungier Street and Upper Stephen Street. Of old the parish must have extended from the present Castle Garden to about the southern end of Aungier Street, and from Whitefriar Street eastward, it is not known how far. Soon after the Norman Settlement, a leper hospital, dedicated to S.Stephen, was founded in S. Peters parish, and endowed with adjoining lands. The tenants of this hospital were freed from parochial ties, and the Master of the hospital came to be regarded as their rector, and the hospital lands were in time treated as a distinct parish. In the beginning of the fourteenth century S. Peters parish narrowly escaped extinction. The Carmelites had made a settlement in the parish late in the thirteenth century, and the Archbishop of Dublin, in whose patronage the rectory of S.Peter slay, proposed to help them by giving to them the church of S.Peter, apparently to be their convent chapel, together with certain land belonging to it. Book The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685 1760

Download or read book The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685 1760 written by Robert Munter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Munter studies the growth and changing nature of the Irish periodical press from the time of the Protestant Ascendancy under William III to 1760, when provincial papers began to flourish outside Dublin. This was the period when newspapers were produced very largely in Dublin, mostly for local circulation among the English-speaking Protestant upper class. Dr Munter first sets the production of newspapers within the general history of Irish printing and bookselling, and the organisation of the trade. He then examines particular aspects of Irish newspaper history, presenting evidence about the importation of paper and the growth of local manufacture; the development of advertising and its importance as an element in the financial structure of the newspaper; evidence of the profitability of newspapers; circulation figures; the effect of the communications system on the supply and dissemination of news; the status of journalists and the development of the journalistic ethic; and analysis of the contents of the papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of a British army chaplain's buggery trial in 1774 reveals surprising truths about early America. On the eve of the American Revolution, the British army considered the case of a chaplain, Robert Newburgh, who had been accused of having sex with a man. Newburgh's enemies cited his flamboyant appearance, defiance of military authority, and seduction of soldiers as proof of his low character. Consumed by fears that the British Empire would soon be torn asunder, his opponents claimed that these supposed crimes against nature translated to crimes against the king. In Vicious and Immoral, historian John McCurdy tells this compelling story of male intimacy and provides an unparalleled glimpse inside eighteenth-century perceptions of queerness. By demanding to have his case heard, Newburgh invoked Enlightenment ideals of equality, arguing passionately that his style of dress and manner should not affect his place in the army or society. His accusers equated queer behavior with rebellion, and his defenders would go on to join the American cause. Newburgh's trial offers some clues to understanding a peculiarity of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century: while gay acts were prohibited by law in much of the British empire, the newly formed United States was comparatively uninterested in legislating against same-sex intimacy. McCurdy imagines what life was like for a gay man in early America and captures the voices of those who loved and hated Newburgh, revealing how sexuality and revolution informed one another. Vicious and Immoral is the first book to place homosexuality in conversation with the American Revolution, and it dares us to rethink the place of LGBTQ people in the founding of the nation.

Book The Remembrances of Elizabeth Freke 1671 1714

Download or read book The Remembrances of Elizabeth Freke 1671 1714 written by Elizabeth Freke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing and then rewriting autobiographical remembrances recalling three decades of marriage and ensuing years of widowhood, Elizabeth Freke strikingly redefines the relationships among self, family, and patriarchy characteristic of early modern women's autobiography. Suffering and sacrifice dominate an extensive ledger of disappointment and bitterness that reveals over time the complex emotions of a Norfolk gentry woman seeking significance and even vindication in her hardships and frustrations. The infirm woman who eventually found herself utterly alone remained to the end a contentious, melodramatic, yet formidable figure - a strong-willed, even sympathetic person intent upon asserting herself against what she perceived as familial neglect and legal abuse. By making available both versions of the remembrances in their entirety, this new, multiple-text edition clarifies the refashioning inherent in each stage of writing and rewriting, recovering with unusual immediacy Freke's late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century domestic world.

This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Castle is widely regarded as one of the most important architects in eighteenth-century Ireland, yet this is the first book devoted to both Castle’s personal history and his professional career. The study builds on a wealth of information concerning his background. It investigates Castle’s Dutch and Sephardic ancestors, his father’s position at the Polish court, the military career of his siblings in the Saxon/Polish army, his wife’s Huguenot family, and his kinship with English economist David Ricardo. Making use of extensive research data, the book refutes commonly held misconceptions about Castle’s name, family, nationality and religion. This book will be of interest to architectural historians, readers interested in Irish/European cultural studies, and researchers into the Jewish diaspora and into early modern Europe in general.
