Book The Routledge Handbook of East Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages 500 1300

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of East Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages 500 1300 written by Florin Curta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 886 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of East Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages, 500–1300 is the first of its kind to provide a point of reference for the history of the whole of Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. While historians have recognized the importance of integrating the eastern part of the European continent into surveys of the Middle Ages, few have actually paid attention to the region, its specific features, problems of chronology and historiography. This vast region represents more than two-thirds of the European continent, but its history in general—and its medieval history in particular—is poorly known. This book covers the history of the whole region, from the Balkans to the Carpathian Basin, and the Bohemian Forest to the Finnish Bay. It provides an overview of the current state of research and a route map for navigating an abundant historiography available in more than ten different languages. Chapters cover topics as diverse as religion, architecture, art, state formation, migration, law, trade and the experiences of women and children. This book is an essential reference for scholars and students of medieval history, as well as those interested in the history of Central and Eastern Europe.

Download or read book Early Ukraine written by Alexander Basilevsky and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Dark Ages enveloped Europe, a civilization was born on the banks of the Dnieper River. Rus--whose capital at Kiev surpassed in grandeur most cities of Europe--was home to the Ukrainian people, whose princes made war on Constantinople and established the city states of what would become Russia. The cities of Rus were destroyed by the Mongols, their remains falling to the Polish-Lithuanian kingdom. With the steppe restored to wilderness, the "kraina" borderlands of the hardy frontiersmen known as Cossacks--who in the 17th century destroyed powerful Polish, Lithuanian and Muscovite armies--gained Ukrainian independence and established a unique social order. Drawing on English, Ukrainian and French sources, this book chronicles the military and social origins of Ukraine and describes the differences between Ukraine and its neighbors. The author refutes the claim that Ukraine and Russia were once united in a common political system.

Book The Pottery from Medieval Novgorod and Its Region

Download or read book The Pottery from Medieval Novgorod and Its Region written by Clive Orton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term excavations in Novgorod and other towns in its region have yielded vast amounts of medieval pottery, mostly locally-made wares of the 10th to 15th centuries, but including imports from the Baltic area, North-West Europe, South Russia, the Black Sea area and the Islamic East. There has been a revival of interest in recent years, and a wide range of questions are being asked. Some long-term projects are coming to fruition, and comparative studies are being made on a regional basis. This book seeks to bring together these studies in a way that will reinforce and inform each other. Comparing and contrasting Western and Russian approaches to ceramic studies, this book demonstrates the potential of medieval pottery studies beyond its perceived value as dating evidence, and provides a sound foundation for a further generation of studies.

Book Ecohydrology Hydrobiology

Download or read book Ecohydrology Hydrobiology written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international journal Ecohydrology & Hydrobiology (E&H) has been created to promote the concept of Ecohydrology, which is defined as the study of the functional interrelations between hydrology and biota at the catchment scale. Ecohydrology extends from the molecular level to catchment-scale processes and is based on three principles: • framework (hydrological principle) - quantification and integration of hydrological and ecological processes at a basin scale; • target (ecological principle) - necessity of enhancing ecosystem absorbing capacity and ecosystem services; and • management tool (ecological engineering) – the use of ecosystem properties for regulation the interplay between hydrology and biota. The journal encourages the submission of manuscripts which adopt an integrative approach to aquatic sciences, explaining ecological and hydrological processes at a river-basin scale or propose practical applications of this knowledge. It will also consider papers in other hydrobiological fields. Especially welcome are papers on regulatory mechanism within biocenosis and the resistance and resilience of freshwater and costal zones ecosystems. There is no page charge for published papers. All submitted papers, written exclusively in English, should be original works, unpublished and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All papers are peer-reviewed. The following types of papers are considered for publication in E&H: • original research papers • invited or submitted review papers, • short communications

Book In Search of Pre Classical Antiquity Rediscovering Ancient Peoples in Mediterranean Europe 19th and 20th c

Download or read book In Search of Pre Classical Antiquity Rediscovering Ancient Peoples in Mediterranean Europe 19th and 20th c written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims rethinking the cultural history of Mediterranean nationalisms between 19th and 20th centuries by tracing their specific approach to antiquity in the forging of a national past. By focusing on how national imaginaries dealt with this topic and how history and archaeology relied on antiquity, this collection of essays introduces a comparative approach presenting several cases studies concerning many regions including Spain, Italy and Slovenia as well as Albania, Greece and Turkey. By adopting the perspective of a dialogue among all these Mediterranean political cultures, this book breaks significantly new ground, because it shifts attention on how Southern Europe nationalisms are an interconnected political and cultural experience, directly related to the intellectual examples of Northern Europe, but also developing its own particular trends. Contributors are: Çiğdem Atakuman, Filippo Carlà, Francisco Garcia Alonso, Maja Gori, Eleni Stefanou, Rok Stergar, Katia Visconti.
