Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book phenomenon of `Club Government' in the mid-nineteenth century, when many of the functions of government were alleged to have taken place behind closed doors, in the secretive clubs of London's St. James's district, has not been adequately historicized. Despite `Club Government' being referenced in most major political histories of the period, it is a topic which has never before enjoyed a full-length study. Making use of previously-sealed club archives, and adopting a broad range of analytical techniques, this work of political history, social history, sociology and quantitative approaches to history seeks to deepen our understanding of the distinctive and novel ways in which British political culture evolved in this period. The book concludes that historians have hugely underestimated the extent of club influence on `high politics' in Westminster, and though the reputation of clubs for intervening in elections was exaggerated, the culture and secrecy involved in gentleman's clubs had a huge impact on Britain and the British Empire.

Book Behind Closed Doors

  • Author : Seth Alexander Thévoz
  • Publisher : Robinson
  • Release : 2022-07-28
  • ISBN : 147214645X
  • Pages : 388 pages

Download or read book Behind Closed Doors written by Seth Alexander Thévoz and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a keen eye for the juicy anecdote, Thévoz tells the fascinating and entertaining story of the rise, decline and resurgence of London's private members' clubs, from the late-eighteenth century to the present day. In doing so he looks at cultural and political developments beyond the clubs, revealing how while the clubs may have been products of their city and country, they also exerted significant influence on London, Britain and places far beyond. This is a chronicle, as informative as it is entertaining, of the ups and downs of London clubland, and how it had an impact on parts of the world far from London. It is packed with amusing anecdotes and illustrative examples of the growth of this quirky, unique institution, which grew to spread around the world. London, though, with its four hundred clubs, was always at its heart. Thévoz reveals how everything we might have thought we knew about these clubs is wrong. They may have started out as white, male, aristocratic watering holes - but that's only part of the story. All sections of society built their own clubs and lived their lives there: highbrow and lowbrow; women and men; working-class, middle-class and upper-class; international and British. The club has been central to a distinctively British form of leisure over more than three centuries. Behind Closed Doors is a distillation of a decade of research and writing on London clubs, based on exclusive behind-the-scenes access to archives and proceedings, as well as a love of gossip and scandal.

Book A Genius for Money

Download or read book A Genius for Money written by Caroline Dakers and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the spectacular rags-to-riches story of James Morrison (1789–1857), who began life humbly but through hard work and entrepreneurial brilliance acquired a fortune unequalled in nineteenth-century England. Using the extensive Morrison archive, Caroline Dakers presents the first substantial biography of the richest commoner in England, recounting the details of Morrison's personal life while also placing him in the Victorian age of enterprise that made his success possible. An affectionate husband and father of ten, Morrison made his first fortune in textiles, then a second in international finance. He invested in North American railways, was involved in global trade from Canton to Valparaiso, created hundreds of jobs, and relished the challenges of "the science of business". His success enabled him to acquire land, houses, and works of art on a scale to rival the grandest of aristocrats.

Book Seven Victorian Architects

Download or read book Seven Victorian Architects written by Jane Fawcett and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historicism, a reliance on inspiration by styles of the past, was the dominant aspect of Victorian architecture. The individual architect's response to earlier styles, however, varied widely, and one of the hallmarks of a creative career was the architect's handling of his chosen precedents. This study presents the largely unpublished work of seven English architects, tracing influences on their individual styles, and provides a cross section of some of the most characteristic themes and qualities of Victorian architecture. The seven architects included are William Burn, Philip and P.C. Hardwick, Sydney Smirke, J.I. Pearson, G.F. Bodley, Alfred Waterhouse, and Edwin Lutyens. Social, technological, and functional aspects of architecture during this period are explored from several viewpoints in the works of these individual practitioners. In addition to the expected country houses and churches, other building types included are railway terminals, libraries, docks, shopping areas, museums, hospitals, and working-class housing.
