Download or read book The Reed Bed written by Dermot Healy and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of poetry should appeal to the same readers. Healy's poetry distils the essence of a gift he exercises to such success in his prose works: narrative, dialogue, characterization, and an acute sense of insight and observation. These new poems are set in and around his home on the ocean's edge of Sligo, in London, and further afield -- he captures the day's "small habits" and "ordinary dramas, " noting at the same time the hallway "where something is after happening." Rough-edged and refreshing, The Reed Bed displays further instances of idiosyncratic comedy and convinces us of a singular capacity to be at once visionary, quirky, and moving.

Journey through the transformative stages of a reed, mirroring the maturation of a human being-the perfect man (Insan-i Kâmil). As the Ney is severed from the reed bed, its lament echoes the yearning of the perfect man, encapsulating the soul's journey from the realm of souls to the cage of flesh. Book excerpt: The proposed revised Part H2, of the Building Regulations (England and Wales), and the proposed new Part M of the Technical Standards for compliance with the Building Standards (Scotland) Regulations 1990, as amended, both make reference to reed bed systems for treating domestic waster water. This Guide provides guidance to support building regulation requirements, describing typical applications and current accepted minimum design specifications for reed beds treating settled domestic wastewater. Part 1 of this Guide describes the historical development of the various reed bed systems along with some of the current variations in design. It also covers the expected performance of such systems, and their application. Part 2 deals with designing, constructing and maintaining reed beds.

Download or read book Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates written by George Mulamoottil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constructed wetlands are proving to be the best natural treatment system for landfill leachates. Most of the contaminants in landfill leachates are degraded in treatment wetlands. Potential for long-term sustainability and significant cost savings are attractive features of this eco-technology. Documentation of the experience in this use of constructed wetlands has been limited. Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates is the first compilation of the results of research from North America and Europe. Originally presented at an international symposium, this collection of papers offers the most recent research findings from the leading researchers in this new and innovative natural treatment system. Specific issues addressed in the text include: leachate characteristics, and the potential for treatability by constructed wetlands wetland treatment, processes and transformation use of constructed wetlands in cold climatic conditions assessment of the tolerance of wetland plants to the toxicity of leachates role of plants in the treatments of leachates integrated wetland systems performance of different wetland treatment systems cost comparisons of wetland technology vs. traditional treatment technologies The potential for environmental contamination due to leachates from landfills is increasing, and there is an urgent need to find ways and means to treat leachates in a sustainable way Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates will provide an invaluable source of information on the subject for scientists, engineers, practitioners, policy makers, and regulatory officials.
Download or read book Hydromorphologic Survey and Assessment of the Lakeshore of Lake Scharm tzelsee as a Prerequisite for the Development of a Lakeshore Utilization Strategy written by Ranjin Fernando and published by Diplomica Verlag. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lakeshores are ecotones between aquatic and terrestrial habitats with a high economic and socio-economic significance. For many years, lake conservation focused on biological and chemical conditions and while improvements on these fields have been achieved, the anthropogenic pressures on European lakeshores have rather increased in recent years. Against this background, the development of utilization and protection strategies for lakeshores is urgently needed. A precondition for this is a standardized survey and assessment of the hydromorphological status which is also required by the European Water Framework Directive under certain circumstances. For this thesis, the lakeshore of Lake Scharmtzelsee, the largest lake in the German state of Brandenburg, was classified according to the GIS-based Hydromorphology Lake (HML) protocol of Ostendorp (2008). Since the HML protocol was at the time still in a testing phase, methodical modifications were applied and recommendations for an improvement of the protocol are given. Deviating from the HML protocol, the eulittoral zone was delineated with a constant width of five meters and the sublittoral zone according to the potential maximum water depth where the available light permits the growth of submerged macrophytes. A detailed on-site mapping and a separate assessment of linear and planar objects in the eulittoral zone enhanced the quality of the data further. For Lake Scharmtzelsee, the assessment showed an expected increase in anthropogenic structural modifications from sublittoral (impact = 1.3) to eulittoral (impact = 1.7) to epilittoral (2.5). A correlation analysis between the impacts in different zones and the mapped objects was carried out and showed inter alia that the main reasons for structural deficits in the eulittoral zone are shore stabilizations and that in the presence of large piers and marinas a reinforced shore is more likely than in the presence of small piers and marinas. Further analysis showed that small marinas and piers can impair approximately 25% of the emergent reed belt area. The results qualify to designate conservation zones for continuous natural or near-natural lakeshore sections and to identify sections with a potential for restoration. The results of this thesis were already used by local authorities to design a blueprint for a lakeshore utilization strategy.

In order to provide these services, wetlands need to be properly evaluated, protected and maintained. This book provides results of the latest research in wetland science around the world. Chapters deal with such topics as the use of constructed wetlands for treatment of various types of wastewater, use of constructed wetlands in agroforestry, wetland hydrology and evapotranspiration, the effect of wetlands on landscape temperature, and chemical properties of wetland soils.
Download or read book Yusuf s Fragrance written by Mahmud Gaami; tr. Mufti Mudasir and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can be said of the 19th century Kashmiri poet, Mahmud Ga ̄mi that he was a pioneer in introducing the Persian genres of the ghazal, nazm, masnavi and na ̄t into Kashmiri. Mahmud Gami's contribution to Kashmiri poetry is unique in both scope and depth. Not only is he the first truly prolific poet who has written entirely in the Kashmiri language, but much of his poetry also stands out for its beauty of expression and depth of thought, such as in the lyrical romance of Shireen Khusrau, Yusuf Zulaikha, and Layla Majnun. Yusuf's Fragrance is both a celebration as well as an homage to Gami's oeuvre. Through these beautiful verses, we explore themes of love, both physical and metaphysical, philosophy, folklore, and tradition through different narrative devices, such as nazms, masnavis, and vatsuns.
