Book excerpt: This story follows on from the events of 'Sir Percy hits back, ' by the Baroness Orczy After Percy and the League rescued Fleurette, only child of Armand Chauvelin, the Jacobins were overthrown, and Robespierre sent to the guillotine. Chauvelin, the cleverest member of the Committee of Public Safety, finds his many enemies see a way to get rid of him! Imprisoned, and expecting death, Chauvelin knows he cannot expect aid from the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel; but he still hopes. The pleas of Fleurette for the life of her 'Bibi' sends Percy and the League back to France. However, since one of the League, Jimmy Holte, meets with an accident, it is a younger Holte, Peter, or rather, Petronilla, who is placed as Chauvelin's keeper whilst Percy arranges an escape. Spending weeks together in hiding, this unlikely pair find much in common, and Chauvelin finds he comes to care for the vivacious girl. An unfortunate incident in which Chauvelin is recognised leads to danger, but Percy is impressed by the way Chauvelin places his trust in Percy's hands, as some of his own followers has failed to do. After the escape, Chauvelin places his skills at the disposal of the league, having become disillusioned by those in charge in France. He is not accepted by all the members of the league, and the angry and jealous manoeuvring of Armand St. Just places Peter into danger even in England.

Book Monsieur de Chauvelin s Will

Download or read book Monsieur de Chauvelin s Will written by Alexandre Dumas and published by . This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Monsieur de Chauvelin's Will we are introduced to several of the historical characters who play parts of some prominence in the first of the so-called Marie-Antoinette Romances, the Memoirs of a Physician, and to one - the Duc de Richelieu - who had been a leading figure at court and in society from the very beginning of the century, and whom the author has introduced, as a young man, in The Regent's Daughter, and, a few years later, in Olympe de Cleves, lending a willing hand in the work of corrupting the young Louis XV, and launching him upon the path which he followed so consistently to the last ghastly hour of his deplorable life. The historical element is not more prominent in any of the author's historical romances than in the one before us. As the characters, almost without exception, are historical personages, so it may be said that there is authority for almost every incident of the narrative. Alexandre Dumas (also known as Dumas phre) (1802-1870) was one of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. Dumas is best known for the historical novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both written within the space of two years, 1844-45, and which belong to the foundation works of popular culture. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales that blend history and fiction.

Book Modernist Star Maps

Download or read book Modernist Star Maps written by Aaron Jaffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together Canadian, American, and British scholars, this volume explores the relationship between modernism and modern celebrity culture. In support of the collection's overriding thesis that modern celebrity and modernism are mutually determining phenomena, the contributors take on a range of transatlantic canonical and noncanonical figures, from the expected (Virginia Woolf and F. Scott Fitzgerald) to the surprising (Elvis and Hitler). Illuminating case studies are balanced by the volume's attentiveness to broader issues related to modernist aesthetics, as the contributors consider celebrity in relationship to identity, commodification, print culture, personality, visual cultures, and theatricality. As the first book to read modernism and celebrity in the context of the crises of individual agency occasioned by the emergence of mass-mediated culture, Modernist Star Maps argues that the relationship between modernism and the popular is unthinkable without celebrity. Moreover, celebrity's strange evolution during the twentieth century is unimaginable without the intercession of modernism's system of cultural value. This innovative collection opens new avenues for understanding celebrity not only for modernist scholars but for critical theorists and cultural studies scholars.
