Book 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants

Download or read book 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants written by World Conservation Monitoring Centre and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1998 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the most comprehensive compilation of data on threatened vascular plants ever published. It includes the names of some 33,000 plant species determined to be rare or threatened on a global scale. Conservation assessments were provided by the IUCN Species Survival Commission, the National Botanical Institute (South Africa), Environment Australia, and CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, together with hundreds of botanic gardens and botanists throughout the world. The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the New York Botanical Garden have made major in-kind contributions. The result of 20 years work by botanists and conservationists around the world, it is intended as a conservation tool, a provider of baseline information to measure conservation progress and as a primary source of data on plant species. Most importantly, however, it provides the building blocks on which to base a worldwide effort to conserve plant species.

Book Plant Conservation Science and Practice

Download or read book Plant Conservation Science and Practice written by Stephen Blackmore and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a green world, rich in plants, can sustain us and the millions of other species with which we share this planet. But, in an era of global change, nature is on the retreat. Like the communities they form, many plant species are becoming rarer, threatened even to the point of extinction. The worldwide community of almost three thousand botanic gardens are holders of the most diverse living collections of plants and have the unique potential to conserve plant diversity. Conservation biology is a fast moving and often controversial field, and, as the contributions within these pages from experts in the field demonstrate, plant conservation is multifaceted, mirroring the complexity of the biodiversity it aims to protect, and striving not just to protect threatened plants but to preserve ecosystem services and secure the integrity of the biosphere.

Book Betula

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carl T. Bertelsen
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-04-24
  • ISBN : 9781536178029
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Betula written by Carl T. Bertelsen and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Betula, generally known as birch, belongs to the family Betulaceae. There are about 83 recognized species of Betula, all of which are essential ecological components of northern temperate and boreal woodlands in many parts of the world. The species of this genus have a good tolerance to freezing temperature and water deficit, as well as high sensitivity to UV-B exposure. The chemical composition of Betula pubescens Ehrh. and Betula pendula Roth. buds is assessed, providing data on their biological activities. Betula species show antiarthritic, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activities, and the authors propose that it is important to consider the biopharmaceutical properties of the secondary metabolites for further development.

Book excerpt: The New Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada is a project by The New York Botanical Garden to fully revise and update the classic Manual by Gleason and Cronquist (1991, NYBG Press). As family treatments are completed for the New Manual, these are being made available as downloadable PDFs. The chief goal of the New Manual is to enable identification of all plants growing spontaneously in a vast region (portions or entirety of 22 states and 5 Canadian provinces). The New Manual includes new tools for plant identification for about 5300 species, amounting to 25% of the total botanical diversity of North America north of Mexico. Approximately 20% of the species included are additions to the 1991 Gleason and Cronquist Manual. In addition, the New Manual provides information on morphology, ecology, phenology, geographic distributions, and conservation status for each species. The New Manual will be indispensable to all those interested in North America's rich botanical resources, including students, conservationists, wildlife managers, educators, and gardeners.

Book The Rhizosphere

Download or read book The Rhizosphere written by Zoe G. Cardon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Below the soil surface, the rhizosphere is the dynamic interface among plant roots, soil microbes and fauna, and the soil itself, where biological as well as physico-chemical properties differ radically from those of bulk soil. The Rhizosphere is the first ecologically-focused book that explicitly establishes the links from extraordinarily small-scale processes in the rhizosphere to larger-scale belowground patterns and processes. This book includes chapters that emphasize the effects of rhizosphere biology on long-term soil development, agro-ecosystem management and responses of ecosystems to global change. Overall, the volume seeks to spur development of cross-scale links for understanding belowground function in varied natural and managed ecosystems. First cross-scale ecologically-focused integration of information at the frontier of root, microbial, and soil faunal biology Establishes the links from extraordinarily small-scale processes in the rhizosphere to larger-scale belowground patterns and processes Includes valuable information on ecosystem response to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and enhanced global nitrogen deposition Chapters written by a variety of experts, including soil scientists, microbial and soil faunal ecologists, and plant biologists

Book Atlas of Macroscopic Wood Identification

Download or read book Atlas of Macroscopic Wood Identification written by Flavio Ruffinatto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas presents macroscopic descriptions, macro cross section pictures, general characteristics and identification keys of 335 wood species currently introduced in the European timber market from all over the world. Overall 292 different genera are represented and CITES-listed timbers are also included. Macroscopic descriptions are based on a recently proposed list of macroscopic features for wood identification. Macroscopic features and their codes are defined and illustrated in the atlas. Wood descriptions also include information about natural durability, physical and mechanical properties, end uses, environmental sustainability and possible related misleading commercial names. Furthermore, each genus is described in terms of number of species, geographical distribution and main commercial timbers, and details are given about to what extent timbers within the genus can be typically identified through macroscopic and microscopic analysis, if any. The atlas will be a valuable guide for all agents in charge for timber verification, those involved in the European Timber Regulation enforcement and CITES inspections, as well as wood scientists, foresters, wood sellers, wood restorers, and any wood worker and wood passionate interested in a fast and reliable tool for wood identification.
