Book excerpt: A unique combination of performance and commentary. Topics include body language and camera angles; rehearsal vs. performance; set design, costume and make-up; and historical context.First published in 1895, this small masterpiece set the pattern for the treatment of war in modern fiction. The novel is told through the eyes of Henry Fleming, a young soldier caught up in an unnamed Civil War battle who is motivated not by the unselfish heroism of conventional war stories, but by fear, cowardice, and finally, egotism. However, in his struggle to find reality amid the nightmarish chaos of war, the young soldier also discovers courage, humility, and perhaps, wisdom. Although Crane had never been in battle before writing The Red Badge of Courage, the book was widely praised by experienced soldiers for its uncanny re-creation of the sights, sounds, and sense of actual combat. Its publication brought Crane immediate international fame and established him as a major American writer. Today, nearly a century later, the book ranks as an enduring landmark of American fiction.

He and his fellow troops - the tall soldier (Jim Conklin) and the loud soldier (named Wilson) - try to figure whether or not or no longer may they think of running. Both believe in themselves sufficient to mention that they will combat as hard as they could, however neither is going as some distance to say that they sincerely will no longer run. The regiment does not move out on the rumored day, but soon thereafter. They march with other Union navy regiments wearing blue. The intensity of its narrative and its naturalistic power earned Crane instant success, and led to his spending most of his brief remaining life war reporting. The other stories collected in this volume draw on this experience; `The Open Boat' (1898) was inspired by his fifty hour struggle with waves after his ship was sunk during an expedition to Cuba; `The Monster' (1899) is a bitterly ironic commentary on the ostracization of a doctor for harbouring the servant who was disfigured and lost his sanity rescuing his son. As a rare example of Crane working in a vein of American Gothic, it is particularly striking for its treatment of race and social injustice. `The Blue Hotel' traces the events that lead to a murder at a bar in a small Nebraska town. This edition is the most generously annotated edition of Crane's work, exploring it from a fresh critical perspective and focusing on his place as an experimental writer, his modernist legacy and his social as well as literary revisionism. -

Book excerpt: An instant international bestseller when first published in 1895, Stephen Crane's fictional narrative recounts one soldier's experiences during the American Civil War (1860-1865). The Red Badge of Courage is a psychological portrait of fear. By turns gripping, lyrical, and deeply sensitive, the book chronicles the repercussions of war on the individual and collective psyche. Rather than describing battles and military campaigns, or settling the true cause of this devastating conflict, Crane brings to life the unimaginable for today's readers. Written before Crane had become a celebrity war correspondent and seen battle firsthand, the book set the standard for realistic war literature for a century to come. This literary tour de force exposes the tragic irony of war as experienced by common soldiers rather than generals and bystanders. Includes an afterword by Amy Kaplan and a detail biographical timeline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Red Badge of Courage, a coming-of-age tale set in an unnamed battle of the Civil War (most likely the Battle of Chancellorsville), is Stephen Crane's most famous novel. Serialized in 1894 and published in 1895 when he was only 23, the novel is routinely named as one of the greatest war novels of all time although, interestingly enough, Crane had no personal military experience. It is a constant fixture on reading lists for high school students and is discussed at length in college English and history courses. Volumes of critical work have been done on the novel, and it has been subject to multiple film and television interpretations. It is part of the strain of realist or naturalist literature also taken up by Frank Norris, Theodore Dreiser, and Mark Twain in the late 19th century.

In the supreme moments of the fight he is possessed by the fiery breath of battle, and finds an inspired utterance that will reach the universal heart of man. This extraordinary book will appeal strongly to the insatiable desire to know the psychology of war—how the sights and sounds, the terrible details of the drama of battle, affect the senses and the soul of man. This is not merely a remarkable book; it is a revelation Mr. Crane has laid the War God on the dissecting-table, and exposed his every bone and nerve and sinew and artery to the public gaze.

As the landscape changed from brown to green, the army awakened, and began to tremble with eagerness at the noise of rumors. It cast its eyes upon the roads, which were growing from long troughs of liquid mud to proper thoroughfares. A river, amber-tinted in the shadow of its banks, purled at the army's feet; and at night, when the stream had become of a sorrowful blackness, one could see across it the red, eyelike gleam of hostile camp-fires set in the low brows of distant hills.
