He enlisted due to the fact he desires to be a hero, just like the warriors of the Greek epics. His very own mom, however, became not interested by such fanciful notions of bravery, and discouraged him from enlisting. When he tells her he's joined the military, she denies him a touching farewell scene and merely says if he unearths himself in a scenario wherein he may be killed or might also do something incorrect, he need to go together with his feelings. He has now not visible his foes but, shop for a communication with one throughout a riverbank past due one night. The veterans inform the young infantrymen of gray, mad, rampaging hordes; however he does not accept as true with the veracity of their tales. He does now not care who he fights so long as he does not run away. He and his fellow troops - the tall soldier (Jim Conklin) and the loud soldier (named Wilson) - try to figure whether or not or no longer may they think of running. Both believe in themselves sufficient to mention that they will combat as hard as they could, however neither is going as some distance to say that they sincerely will no longer run. The regiment does not move out on the rumored day, but soon thereafter. They march with other Union navy regiments wearing blue. Their untested nature is shown within the gleaming newness in their unscathed uniforms. The men run down roads carved out in the forest. During this time, Henry's mind are blended and distracted. One minute he feels that he should have in no way enlisted and misses his domestic, but the subsequent second he feels the overpowering urge to observe a warfare. From a secure region on a hill, he watches a skirmish in quiet fascination but does now not revel in the preference to take part. After he sees his first corpse, he begins to suspect that his regiment is being result in their slaughter, to be sacrificed to a red war god. He needs to inform his pals his concept, however is afraid they'll chortle.
