Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 29: April, 1955 For some years large manufacturing concerns have appreciated the fine work that colleges, particularly the small independent colleges, are doing, and have realized further that many of these institutions, with increased costs of operation, are finding the going hard. Gifts of considerable sums have come from the Rockefeller Gen eral Education Board, and from other large corporations. The gift of the Ford Foundation is to be used to in crease professors' salaries with the condition, however, that the institution raise additional sums from other sources. The Ford Foundation appreciates the fact that unless adequate salaries are paid, good professors cannot be obtained and if secured cannot be retained; and as a corollary, unless a college has good teachers, its product cannot be expected to be of the first order. These large corporations are not motivated wholly by philanthropy. They have learned that these private institutions are reservoirs from which they can obtain some of their best business executives. 7c are familiar here at hampden-sydne'y with the representatives from large business concerns coming each year to interview students who are about to graduate. One cannot overestimate the value of the physical plant, its laboratories, and physical equipment generally, but with all of these, unless capable and well qualified teachers are provided, little is being achieved. It is particularly pleasing, therefore, that the Ford Foundation has allocated the fund to be used in raising the salaries of professors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 3: April 1, 1929 One of the first matters to be decided by the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the campaign was the form of the appeal. It has been felt that the appeal of the College for support is not alone to the Presbyterian Church but to the South generally, and to the State of Virginia in particular. Therefore, in the literature prepared, particular emphasis has been laid upon the service which the College has rendered the nation and the State, besides the quality of men She has given to education, to the church, to medicine and the law. By putting the appeal on this broad basis it is hoped to interest the widest possible field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 4: October 1, 1929 The necessary sum not having been raised by July Ist last, the time has been extended and a vigorous and intensive campaign will go on until the first of January, 1930. There is a faithful group of Alumni who, besides giving all they could afford to give, are freely giving their time to the cause. Will not those who have thus far failed to respond come, not only to the aid of the College, but to the assistance of this gallant band who are both working and giving? Surely the incentive should be great enough for any son of the College - that of having a part in putting one Of the Oldest, most useful and most honored of institutions in the country beyond the possibility of want and where it can go forward with ever - increasing usefulness to the state and to the nation. We feel confident that no loyal son who would pause to think will let SO great an Opportunity for service go unheeded. The result is that he either puts an additional burden on his parents, who may be making a great effort to give him an education, or else he leaves college in debt to his fraternity, thus impairing his sense of obligation and putting an additional charge on those who do pay their dues and contribute their part to the social demands made on the chapter. What would seem to be of greater importance to the fraternity itself is the fact that a number of boys whose breeding, ability, and promise would make them most desirable and congenial fraternity men and reflect credit on the fraternity, have to decline because they cannot afford the cost.
