Book excerpt: In this long-awaited updated edition of his groundbreaking work Priceless: Curing the Healthcare Crisis, renowned healthcare economist John Goodman ("father" of Health Savings Accounts) analyzes America's ongoing healthcare fiasco—including, for this edition, the failed promises of Obamacare. Goodman then provides what many critics of our healthcare system neglect: solutions. And not a moment too soon. Americans are entangled in a system with perverse incentives that raise costs, reduce quality, and make care less accessible. It's not just patients that need liberation from this labyrinth of confusion—it's doctors, businessmen, and institutions as well. Read this new work and discover: why no one sees a real price for anything: no patient, no doctor, no employer, no employee; how Obamacare's perverse incentives cause insurance companies to seek to attract the healthy and avoid the sick; why having a preexisting condition is actually WORSE under Obamacare than it was before—despite rosy political promises to the contrary; why emergency-room traffic and long waits for care have actually increased under Obamacare; how Medicaid expansion spends new money insuring healthy, single adults, while doing nothing for the developmentally disabled who languish on waiting lists and children who aren't getting the pediatric care they need; how the market for medical care COULD be as efficient and consumer-friendly as the market for cell phone repair... and what it would take to make that happen; how to create centers of medical excellence, which compete to meet the needs of the chronically ill; and much, much more... Thoroughly researched, clearly written, and decidedly humane in its concern for the health of all Americans, John Goodman has written the healthcare book to read to understand today's healthcare crisis. His proposed solutions are bold, crucial, and most importantly, caring. Healthcare is complex. But this book isn't. It's clear, it's satisfying, and it's refreshingly human. If you read even one book about healthcare policy in America, this is the one to read.

Book Health Care in Crisis

Download or read book Health Care in Crisis written by Theresa Morris and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more not-for-profit hospitals are becoming financially unstable and being acquired by large hospital systems. The effects range from not having necessary life-saving equipment to losing the most experienced nurses to better jobs at other hospitals. In Health Care in Crisis, Theresa Morris takes an in-depth look at how this unintended consequence of the Affordable Care Act plays out in a non-profit hospital's obstetrical ward. Based on ethnographic observations of and in-depth interviews with obstetrical nurses and hospital administrators at a community, not-for-profit hospital in New England, Health Care in Crisis examines how nurses' care of patients changed over the three-year period in which the Affordable Care Act was implemented, state Medicaid funds to hospitals were slashed, and hospitals were being acquired by a for-profit hospital system. Morris explains how the tumultuous political-economic changes have challenged obstetrical nurses, who are at the front lines of providing care for women during labor and birth. --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Omar Little die of lead poisoning? Would a decriminalization strategy like the one in Hamsterdam end the War on Drugs? What will it take to save neglected kids like Wallace and Dukie? Tapping into 'The Wire' uses the acclaimed television series as a road map for exploring connections between inner-city poverty and drug-related violence. Past Baltimore City health commissioner Peter Beilenson teams up with former Baltimore Sun reporter Patrick A. McGuire to deliver a compelling, highly readable examination of urban policy and public health issues affecting cities across the nation. Each chapter recounts scenes from episodes of the HBO series, placing the characters' challenges into the broader context of public policy. A candid interview with the show’s co-creator David Simon reveals that one of the intentions of the series is to expose gross failures of public institutions, including criminal justice, education, labor, the news media, and city government. Even if readers haven’t seen the series, the book’s detailed summaries of scenes and characters brings them up to speed and engages them in both the story and the issues. With a firm grasp on the hard truths of real-world problems, Tapping into 'The Wire' helps undo misconceptions and encourage a dialogue of understanding. -- John A. Book excerpt: Calming fears, alleviating suffering, enhancing and saving lives -- this is what motivates doctors virtually every single day. When the structure and culture in which physicians work are well aligned, being a doctor is a most rewarding job. But something has gone wrong in the physician world, and it is urgent that we fix it. Fundamental flaws in the US health care system make it more difficult and less rewarding than ever to be a doctor. The convergence of a complex amalgam of forces prevents primary care and specialty physicians from doing what they most want to do: Put their patients first at every step in the care process every time. Barriers include regulation, bureaucracy, the liability burden, reduced reimbursements, and much more. Physicians must accept the responsibility for guiding our nation toward a better health care delivery system, but the pathway forward -- amidst jarring changes in our health care system -- is not always clear. In The Doctor Crisis, Dr. Jack Cochran, executive director of The Permanente Federation, and author Charles Kenney show how we can improve health care on a grassroots level, regardless of political policy disputes, by improving conditions for physicians and asking them to take on broader accountability; by calling on physicians to be effective leaders as well as excellent clinicians. The authors clarify the necessary steps required to enable physicians to focus on patient care and offer concrete ideas for establishing systems that place patients' needs above all else. Cochran and Kenney make a compelling case that fixing the doctor crisis is a prerequisite to achieving access to quality and affordable health care throughout the United States.

Book excerpt: In Within Our Reach, Rosalynn Carter and coauthors Susan K. Golant and Kathryn E. Cade render an insightful, unsparing assessment of the state of mental health. Mrs. Carter has been deeply invested in this issue since her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, campaigned for governor of Georgia, when she saw firsthand the horrific, dehumanizing treatment of people with mental illnesses. Using stories from her 35 years of advocacy to springboard into a discussion of the larger issues at hand, Carter crafts an intimate and powerful account of a subject previously shrouded in stigma and shadow, surveying the dimensions of an issue that has affected us all. She describes a system that continues to fail those in need, even though recent scientific breakthroughs with mental illness have potential to help most people lead more normal lives. Within Our Reach is a seminal, searing, and ultimately optimistic look at how far we've come since Jimmy Carter's days on the campaign trail and how far we have yet to go.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why Low Carb Should Be the Default Approach for Managing and Preventing Metabolic Syndrome and Other Chronic Diseases. Almost every day it seems a new study is published that shows you are at risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or all-cause mortality due to something you've just eaten for lunch. Many of us no longer know what to eat or who to believe. In the Nutrition Revolutiont; distinguished biochemist Richard Feinman, PhD, cuts through the noise, explaining the intricacies of nutrition and human metabolism in accessible terms. He lays out the tools you need to navigate the current confusion in the medical literature and its increasingly bizarre reflection in the media. At the same time, The Nutrition Revolution offers an unsparing critique of the nutritional establishment, which continues to demonize fat and refute the benefits of low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets, all despite decades of evidence to the contrary. Feinman tells the story of the first low-carbohydrate revolution fifteen years ago, how it began, what killed it, and why a second revolution is now reaching a fever pitch. He exposes the backhanded tactics of a regressive nutritional establishment that ignores good data and common sense, and highlights the innovative work of those researchers who have broken rank. Entertaining, informative, and irreverent, Feinman paints a broad picture of the nutrition world: the beauty of the underlying biochemistry; the embarrassing failures of the medical establishment; the preeminence of low-carbohydrate diets for weight loss, diabetes, other metabolic diseases, and even cancer; and what's wrong with the constant reports that common foods represent a threat rather than a source of pleasure."--

Book Poor Families in America s Health Care Crisis

Download or read book Poor Families in America s Health Care Crisis written by Ronald J. Angel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor Families in America's Health Care Crisis examines the implications of the fragmented and two-tiered health insurance system in the United States for the health care access of low-income families. For a large fraction of Americans their jobs do not provide health insurance or other benefits and although government programs are available for children, adults without private health care coverage have few options. Detailed ethnographic and survey data from selected low-income neighborhoods in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio document the lapses in medical coverage that poor families experience and reveal the extent of untreated medical conditions, delayed treatment, medical indebtedness, and irregular health care that women and children suffer as a result. Extensive poverty, the increasing proportion of minority households, and the growing dependence on insecure service sector work all influence access to health care for families at the economic margin.

Book The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment

Download or read book The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its report Telemedicine: A Guide to Assessing Telecommunications for Health Care. In that report, the IOM Committee on Evaluating Clinical Applications of Telemedicine found telemedicine is similar in most respects to other technologies for which better evidence of effectiveness is also being demanded. Telemedicine, however, has some special characteristics-shared with information technologies generally-that warrant particular notice from evaluators and decision makers. Since that time, attention to telehealth has continued to grow in both the public and private sectors. Peer-reviewed journals and professional societies are devoted to telehealth, the federal government provides grant funding to promote the use of telehealth, and the private technology industry continues to develop new applications for telehealth. However, barriers remain to the use of telehealth modalities, including issues related to reimbursement, licensure, workforce, and costs. Also, some areas of telehealth have developed a stronger evidence base than others. The Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) sponsored the IOM in holding a workshop in Washington, DC, on August 8-9 2012, to examine how the use of telehealth technology can fit into the U.S. health care system. HRSA asked the IOM to focus on the potential for telehealth to serve geographically isolated individuals and extend the reach of scarce resources while also emphasizing the quality and value in the delivery of health care services. This workshop summary discusses the evolution of telehealth since 1996, including the increasing role of the private sector, policies that have promoted or delayed the use of telehealth, and consumer acceptance of telehealth. The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment: Workshop Summary discusses the current evidence base for telehealth, including available data and gaps in data; discuss how technological developments, including mobile telehealth, electronic intensive care units, remote monitoring, social networking, and wearable devices, in conjunction with the push for electronic health records, is changing the delivery of health care in rural and urban environments. This report also summarizes actions that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can undertake to further the use of telehealth to improve health care outcomes while controlling costs in the current health care environment.

Book The Real Cause of Suffering Mental Health Crisis Globally

Download or read book The Real Cause of Suffering Mental Health Crisis Globally written by Caroline Ann Kennedy and published by Caroline Ann Kennedy. This book was released on 2024-07-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of people are facing mental health crisis today and are adversely affected by the harmful medication that is prescribed to them. Millions go to an early grave due to the disturbing side effects of these treatments and then others are simply cast away by society to become invalids in their families. This is not the reality of what the destiny of life holds for the millions around the world who are adversely affected by mental health issues which are further triggered by anxiety and depression. There are also many other types of mental health crisis which affect older people such as Alzheimer's and Dementia Parkinson and Tardive Dyskinesia. These illnesses are wrongly diagnosed. In most cases they are actually the symptomatic reaction of what the intelligence of the body naturally wants to be evolved to. The harmful medications provided only destroy the natural flow of the wisdom of the body and can even cripple the mind. Simple healing modalities can be given to simplify the sympathetic system and then expand the mind to high states of awareness and wisdom. It is the prevailing wisdom of the Universal field that wants to get diverted to the consciousness of humanity. Even the things that are affecting children like ADHD and autism can be softened with simple modalities like songs using the Language of Light. In fact, all the modalities which I use include the Language of Light. We must not get to bugged down with the worrisome thought that life is over when we are affected by any kind of mental instability of the mind and body. Long Book Description Mental Health Ciris globally are affected by the nuances of time and space that is fluctuating with the frequency of light and cannot be disputed by the ones who are propagating the cures and vaccinations. Those who are radically affected in their entangled minds simply cannot function with what is given to them as a remedy for healing their minds. The mind is simply the electrical field of the body and cannot be activated with chemicals which are very harmful to the body, especially to the central nervous system. It is a distinctive thing to know that everyone who claims to know what is happening in society cannot simply fix those who are broken mentally. Prescribing chemical compounds that can stifle the life force out of the body is not an indicator of helping those who are suffering. It is the many facets of life that can cause people to become too engorged in the mind so that they begin to feel hopeless and unworthy of themselves. When they are then taken to the hospital for help, the wrong diagnosis is pronounced and then they are prescribed dangerous anti-psychotic drugs. The many organizations which are responsible for helping those who are labeled as mentally ill are not equipped with the correct tools to rectify the symptoms that are affecting those who are suffering. It is the wisdom of the ages that will help to effectively treat the real causes of the labels attached to those who are mentally unbalanced. My own experience with suffering from being unbalanced in the mind has propelled me to new levels of awareness, where I knew from the inception of the occurrence of the imbalance that I would have to be a voice for those who are suffering with mental condition of the mind and body. I knew distinctly then as I know now that I will not only be a voice for those who are suffering with mental health conditions and feel utterly hopeless and confused, but I am ahead of other who came before me to provide the wisdom of the universe to those who are entrusted with the care of the mentally ill patients. We must never allow the indignity of money and gullibility to stifle our conscience to become rich from the suffering patients who are mentally unbalanced. It is also the problematic things in the universe that can trigger the density of the times that are causing more people to become so heavy with density that they simply cannot cope with the magnetic proportion of the things that they have faced in life. The majority of people who are suffering globally with depression and anxiety are feeling the effects of the galactic center, being rife with the density of sadness, shame, guilt, fear, and loneliness. This is what triggers feelings of anxiousness, deception, hate and anger. These feelings can be softened with loving kindness to self and then be transmuted with hope and dignity. However, if left unchecked, these feelings can accumulate to heavier feelings of depression, anxiety, and utter hopelessness. These are really repressed feelings which are not managed with care and due diligence from childhood and then are not fully understood as the individuals grow to adulthood. There are many levels of mental health crisis happening in the world today. This can be seen in the many rehab facilities which offer hope to the ones who are negatively charged. These facilities are really a heaven for more of the nuances of what is not need by the ones who must suffer from the medication that is prescribed to them. It is the ultimate crucifixion of the lifeforce to have these drugs taken as the sole factor to fix those who are broken mentally. They cause more damage than good. More efforts should be placed on having those who are already enlightened to share the wisdom of the ages to help soften the central nervous system and then reduce the tension on the body. The spine is especially affected by mental health conditions such as panic attacks and manic-depressive disorder. It is also the things like schizophrenia that can further delegate those affected to an early grave. It must be pointed out here that these are the states of the mind that can be rectified without the prescribed illicit medications. These anti-psychotic medications are really a danger to the body and can severely affect the organs and sympathetic systems of the body. The central nervous system is also drastically reduced to the density of the stratosphere when there are too many chemical imbalances from the medications. The dopamine and serotonin levels are significantly reduced when the medications are contra active to what the body is supposed to naturally produce. I am capable of helping those who are facing severe mental health issues to come to a place of healing and then afford them the decency of knowing the life can continue with ease and grace without the need for any harmful medication whatsoever. It is the distinction to know that we are called to become enlightened so that we can help others who are suffering with mental illness.
