The sharing economy, also known as collaborative consumption, and peer-to-peer accommodation, has become a major economic development that has changed the way that consumers spend money. Airbnb emerged as the leader in the peer-to-peer accommodation, causing disruption within the hospitality market. Millennials, born between the years 1982 and 2000, are a growing portion of the world's age demographics, and will soon be the largest age cohort (Howe & Strauss, 2000). While they value travel, they have been adversely affected by the recent recession and have had to change the way they spend their money (Airbnb, 2016; Winograd & Hais, 2014). Occurring alongside the recession was the rise of the sharing economy, which has had considerable effect on consumer spending habits (Guttentag, 2015). In the hospitality and tourism market, Airbrb positioned itself as the dominate alternative for providing affordable and authentic stays. This study explores whether the concept of authenticity, alongside affordability, plays a role in how millennials decide to choose overnight accommodations, and how the hospitality industry at-large has responded to the Millennial client.
