Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Re-Conquest of Ireland, A. D. 1895 Let it be remembered that for more than seventy years Ireland has scarcely known a period of repose. Agitation succeeded agitation, as tide succeeds tide upon the sea-shore. Sometimes the agitations were answered by concessions, which it was instantly announced were wrung from the fears of England. Sometimes the agitators were bought off with places; and then there were not wanting patriots who eagerly denounced the traitors, and awaited the felicitous hour when they, too, would be offered the price of silence. Conspicuous among these political movements were the agitation for a Repeal of the Legislative Union, the Young Ireland confederation, and the Fenian conspiracy, which preceded the Land Act of 1870; and the Home Rule organization, and the Land League which followed it. The cry for Repeal was literally the cry of millions. True, they knew not what they demanded; but they knew that the great tribune had promised them national greatness as the outcome of separation from England, and they believed him. The Young Irelanders had a shorter career; but it was a career which had an attractive brilliancy of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Five Years in Ireland 1895 1900 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Years in Ireland 1895-1900 The visit Of Her Majesty the Queen, in April this year, and events connected therewith, rivetted men's minds upon Ireland to an extent rarely, if ever, before equalled. Not only the thoughtful and the sympathetic, but even the hitherto adverse Englishman and American have felt their interest in this historic island quickened. If, therefore, an Irishman seizes the occasion to give the public some account Of social and political life and progress in his country, it is to be hoped, at least, that the time Will not be considered inopportune. During no previous similar period, perhaps, has so much beneficial legislation been passed for Ireland, without pre cedent agitation, as during the five years under review. This book is not intended to be a eulogy of the Irish Government on that account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844

Download or read book The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.
