Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kingdom is one of the largest plantations in the southern states and Camberley has become one of the most important estates in the whole area. Hector and Anne were married in 1823. The coloured employee servants of the estate referred to her as Lady Anna. The union between the two of them produced four sons, Charles, Joseph, Jim and John. To complete the family tree, Hector was also to sire a bastard son called Dean. Hector was constantly trying to improve and change the present way of living in this young nation. He was against race and coloured bar, always trying to bring people closer together. It was very difficult, as he had to overcome the bitterness as a result of the wars of American Independence from 1775 to 1783 and then deal with the Civil War of 1861. He was totally against the fact that, in a number of cases, a family of father and son or brother versus brother took up arms against each other during this warring period. Even when the Union Army and the Confederate Army were each side of Kingdom, he would not be drawn into the war. Long before this period in time, Hector and Ann had many very difficult and unpleasant problems to overcome which will unfold in this volume of Kingdom and Foundation.

He had a very special friendship with a crippled young lady, called Rosie Poppalongski, the daughter of the neighboring farm. After the destruction of Kingdom, Dean set out to establish Kingdom and Foundation, becoming one of the largest cattle herd in the Southern States. The last member of the Rawlinson family spent most of his time in Europe surviving the Nazi regime and also assisting people to escape from East Germany to West Germany from the communist party.

Book Empires of the Plain

Download or read book Empires of the Plain written by Lesley Adkins and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-12-13 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Well-told story of a life dedicated to scholarship, with great adventures and derring-do an unexpected bonus." - Kirkus Reviews From 1827 Henry Rawlinson, fearless soldier, sportsman and imperial adventurer of the first rank, spent twenty-five years in India, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan in the service of the East India Company. During this time he survived the dangers of disease and warfare, including the disastrous First Anglo-Afghan War. A gifted linguist, fascinated by history and exploration, he became obsessed with cuneiform, the world's earliest writing. An immense inscription high on a sheer rock face at Bisitun in the mountains of western Iran, carved on the orders of King Darius the Great of Persia over 2,000 years ago, was the key to understanding the many cuneiform scripts and languages. Only Rawlinson had the physical and intellectual skills, courage, self-motivation and opportunity to make the perilous ascent and copy the monument. Here, Lesley Adkins relates the story of Rawlinson's life and how he triumphed in deciphering the lost languages of Persia and Babylonia, overcoming his brilliant but bitter rival, Edward Hincks. While based in Baghdad, Rawlinson became involved in the very first excavations of the ancient mounds of Mesopotamia, from Nineveh to Babylon, an area that had been fought over by so many powerful empires. His decipherment of the inscriptions resurrected unsuspected civilizations, revealing intriguing details of everyday life and forgotten historical events. By proving to the astonished Victorian public that people and places in the Old Testament really existed (and, furthermore, that documents and chronicles had survived from well before the writing of the Bible), Rawlinson became a celebrity and assured his own place in history.

It includes appalling accounts of hidden pregnancies, harsh experience as a solo mother, dependence on drugs, intimate acquaintance with sexism and poverty, mental breakdown, and a perilous trip to China in wartime. Book Feminism Dramaturgy and the Contemporary British History Play

Download or read book Feminism Dramaturgy and the Contemporary British History Play written by Rebecca Benzie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of the contemporary British history play, why might we automatically think of playwrights such as David Hare, Howard Brenton, Peter Gill and Edward Bond? Because for decades the writing of the history play has been the preserve of the white male. This book provides a vital feminist intervention into the dramaturgy of history plays, investigating work produced at major British theatres from 2000 to the present, written by a generation of innovative women playwrights. This much-needed study explores the use of history – specifically Elizabethan, Restoration, Victorian and early 20th century – in contemporary playwriting in order to interrogate the gender politics of this work. Within the framework of contemporary feminism – including the pivotal #MeToo movement – the book looks at post-2000s feminist drama that somehow represents the past. Through delving into the recurring tropes and their politics in the light of current feminist debate, the author helps us grasp how these plays essentially re-imagine gender politics. Plays that are considered include Emilia (Morgan Lloyd Malcolm), Swive [Elizabeth] (Ella Hickson), An August Bank Holiday Lark (Deborah McAndrew), The Empress (Tanika Gupta), Red Velvet (Lolita Chakrabarti), Scuttlers (Rona Munro), I, Joan (Charlie Josephine), Blue Stockings and Nell Gwynn (Jessica Swale), and the musical Six (Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss).

Book The Book of Enlightened Masters

Download or read book The Book of Enlightened Masters written by Andrew Rawlinson and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the definitive and complete book about a phenomenon which did not exist a hundred years ago, but is now growing rapidly and dramatically changing Western culture -- the rise of Western (mostly American) teachers, who fill the role of guru or master. A few books have appeared on some narrow aspects of this astounding phenomenon; this is the first book to survey the entire field. Encyclopedic in its scope, The Book of Enlightened Masters includes biographical essays on 140 spiritual teachers, giving their life stories and an account of their teachings. Yet it is also a user-friendly introduction, with a survey of the teachers and their teachings, a historical narrative of how and when the movement developed, and an evaluation of the issues raised by it. A century ago, there were no Western masters-no Westerners who were, for instance, Hindu swamis, Zen roshis, or Sufi sheikhs. Now there are many such teachers, with millions of followers. Starting from scratch, the West has produced its own spiritual teachers in traditions that until recently were utterly alien. And in the last quarter-century, a number of independent teachers have appeared, who belong to no single identifiable tradition. The Western masters have not merely transplanted the Eastern spiritual traditions to the West, they have transformed these traditions by their distinctively Western approach: innovative, entrepreneurial, and combining elements from previously unconnected Eastern traditions. The new teachers are changing Western culture by making available a view of the human condition which is new in the West but very attractive to large and growing numbers of Westerners, an approach Dr. Rawlinson calls"spiritual psychology". Spiritual psychology holds that human beings are best understood in terms of consciousness and its modifications, that consciousness can be changed by spiritual practice, and that there are enlightened masters who have done this and can teach others.
