Book The Railroad Grows Into an Industry 1840 1850

Download or read book The Railroad Grows Into an Industry 1840 1850 written by Kathleen Tracy and published by Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the 1820s, the main form of commercial transportation in America was steamboats, which were able to move large quantities of freight and passengers. When the first railroads were built, they were initially seen as a novelty. But a handful of visionaries believed that railroads could transform the way business was conducted and create new opportunities for both established companies and independent entrepreneurs. In the 1840s and the 1850s, the railroad industry would experience tremendous growth and become the primary means of moving goods throughout the United States. Expansion of the rail system stimulated the economy, promoted manufacturing, and turned railroads into one of the most valuable industries in the world, making their owners millionaires and industrial–age power brokers in the process. Railroads also helped make America one of the most dominant economic powers in the world.

Book Urban Growth and City Systems in the United States 1840 1860

Download or read book Urban Growth and City Systems in the United States 1840 1860 written by Allan Pred and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major new work of urban geography, Allan Pred interprets the process by which major cities grew and the entire city-system of the United States developed during the antebellum decades. The book focuses on the availability and distribution of crucial economic information. For as cities developed, this information helped determine the new urban areas in which business opportunities could be exploited and productive innovations implemented. Pred places this original approach to urbanization in the context of earlier, more conventional studies, and he supports his view by a wealth of evidence regarding the flow of commodities between major cities. He also draws on an analysis of newspaper circulation, postal services, business travel, and telegraph usage. Pred's book goes far beyond the usual "biographies" of individual cities or the specialized studies of urban life. It offers a large and fascinating view of the way an entire city-system was put together and made to function. Indeed, by providing the first full account of these two decades of American urbanization, Pred has supplied a vital and hitherto missing link in the history of the United States.

These two volumes exemplify this modern approach. This Volume 5, of the eleven part set entitled Industrial Revolutions contains thirteen papers, with an introduction, which adopt and apply a conceptual and explicitly comparative approach to European economic history as a whole. Volume 5 includes sixteen national case studies, again organized around or set within the context of theoretical principles and ideas derived largely from macroeconomic theory, social accounting, productivity measurement and regional analysis.

Book The Promise of Growth and Prosperity

Download or read book The Promise of Growth and Prosperity written by Dawn Duncan Funk and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settled in the wilds of the Carolina back country in the mid-eighteenth century, Charlotte and Salisbury, North Carolina grew up in isolation and independence. The two courthouse towns commanded the business of the surrounding countryside, but faced limited growth and economic stagnation because of their remote inland location and inadequate transportation outlets to larger trade markets. In the 1840s, a group of farmers, merchants, and professionals in Charlotte and Salisbury seized upon the railroad as the means to alleviate their transportation problems and stimulate growth in their region. Both towns acquired railroad lines in the 1850s and experienced a degree of growth and prosperity. The railroad ended their isolation and drew Charlotte and Salisbury into the regional and national economy, sparking an intense rivalry as each sought economic dominance in the region. But the railroad was only the first step in the process of urbanization for these towns. It did not ensure substantial growth or continued prosperity. Other factors - location, timing, available capital, and the ability to take risks - allowed town leaders to seize opportunities and determined the path of future growth and development. While Charlotte was able to overcome the challenges wrought by war and changes in the agricultural and labor system of the South, Salisbury could not. Charlotte surged forward, acquiring more railroad lines and investing in manufacturing and industry while Salisbury was left behind because its leaders failed to take risks and seize the opportunities that came their way.
