Download or read book The Race at Butt Creek Dawn written by Michael. G.F. Graham and published by Michael G .F. Graham. This book was released on with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Race at Butt Creek Dawn. A Fictional Story about a Major Buggy Race situated in the Pennsylvania town of Lancaster County. This is know as Amish Town to some. The Race is a Major Event . It is entertainment among the Amish and English people of the Pennsylvania Lancaster County. On my travels through Pennsylvania town of Lancaster County in 1997. What I discovered was very interesting to me. I noticed an entertainment event that is in desperate in need of being established, developed , A major event in order for Buggy’s to be Raced around a Farm. With tracks outlined. I saw this a an Idea at first. Then I began to explore the idea a bit more. This Race is definitely needed for it's entertainment value. Buggy's need to be raced apart from being the major transport. They are the major transport function I understood this. They do have other purposes. Entertainment is my idea for one. Who can drive a buggy. Mainly Men in the Race. It not uncommon to see a woman driving a Buggy in the Race. Amish men, and woman are social people they need to get together, and they believe there system works for them. They are Farmers, and produce food from their Farms. They are business owners and have expanded out into services business. There is a big demand for Amish Food grown on the farms. What is known is that during the pandemic the demand for Amish food was enormous. Given that the Amish are America's oldest Amish settlement, where 350.000 still live a lifestyle based on a set of rules or Ordenem. There belief system has intrigues me. Government, Educational, Health systems. They do not seem interested in and stay away from the process . They have independent systems work in harmony for them. There own schools. They do not take social security. They pay for there own medical. Social services, and Education. They save there money I am told. The idea of a Buggy race is not Just a plane old Race of Buggy’s. Based on my Journey through Pennsylvania Lancaster County. My imagination got really wound up with the Buggy Race idea. This is my fictional story is about a major Buggy Race. It has an action packed performance held once a year on a make shift Farm. The Farm is stations with tracks that are circular around a large Farm building. The Race of buggy's has to circumvent the Farm building 7 times. The distance is half a miles or 1k. It is my understanding the rewards are impressive. There is some serious money allocated to the buggy Race for the winner of the Race. Prize money is quite large. There is a big rummage Garage sale prior to the Buggy race. This Large rummage Garage Sale raises Funds in large amount $$ for the winner of the Buggy Race. That $$ amount is never disclosed as it is a secret among the Elders of the church. My story begins with an Amish man from Germany in the Town of Bremen North of Germany. His Name is Michael. G, and he is the son of a Farmer. Called Jacob. His brother, Willis has requested help from his family in Germany, and has asked Willis to send his Son to Pennsylvania Lancaster County to work on the Farm as he has special skills that are desperately needed. Michael G knows about Horses, Farming, Planting, Cows, Dogs, Carpentry, Buggy racing. The Elders from the church in Pennsylvania Lancaster County find out a man is coming to Ellis farms, and they would like to meet him. He is single. They have a woman in the Amish church with two children who's husband has died of a hart attack. Long hours and overworked was my guess. 12 hours days. Maybe. They want to see if he would be interested. There is plenty of rooms at the Jacob farm as it has a large farm house. However, there is another woman close by on the next farm who has been looking around for a man. Amish woman are very particular when come to a man. They need to meet a criteria only know to them. In the Pennsylvania town of Lancaster County a Major buggy Race has a special significance in terms of who will win the Race. It not only about a Race. There are strange things happening in the background that outsiders may not know. Religion, Farming, Relationships, Business dealings. The list goes on. The Amish system. The rules. The lifestyle. Church attending. House building, No smart phone only flip phones. No mains power. Solar and batteries seems to be the way there going.

Book excerpt: The man who led the salvage efforts to raise a sunken US Navy submarine recounts the mission in a tale “that will surely rank among the epics of the sea” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). The sinking of the submarine S-51 was one of the greatest tragedies in American naval history. Due to a miscommunication and subsequent collision between the sub and a passing steamship on a September night, the S-51, including thirty-three of its crew of thirty-six, sank to the ocean depths. The tragedy of the S-51 captivated the nation, and was a fixture in the pages of American newspapers. The story took on a whole new dimension when the navy decided to take over the salvage of the thousand-ton behemoth from a civilian company. Heading the crew tasked with this impossible feat was Edward Ellsberg, at the time a lieutenant commander. On the Bottom is Ellsberg’s account of the successes and failures he and his men experienced as they attempted an astonishing feat of engineering and bravery: the first salvage of a submarine from the open ocean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small neighborhood in northern Frankfort, Kentucky, Crawfish Bottom was located on fifty acres of swampy land along the Kentucky River. "Craw's" reputation for vice, violence, moral corruption, and unsanitary conditions made it a target for urban renewal projects that replaced the neighborhood with the city's Capital Plaza in the mid-1960s. Douglas A. Boyd's Crawfish Bottom: Recovering a Lost Kentucky Community traces the evolution of the controversial community that ultimately saw four-hundred families displaced. Using oral histories and firsthand memories, Boyd not only provides a record of a vanished neighborhood and its culture but also demonstrates how this type of study enhances the historical record. A former Frankfort police officer describes Craw's residents as a "rough class of people, who didn't mind killing or being killed." In Crawfish Bottom, the former residents of Craw acknowledge the popular misconceptions about their community but offer a richer and more balanced view of the past.

Book excerpt: “An entertaining survey” (Publishers Weekly) through the highs and lows of a spectacular, pivotal year in American history—1908. A captivating look at a bygone era through the lens of a single, surprisingly momentous American year one century ago. 1908 was the year Henry Ford launched the Model T, the Wright Brothers proved to the world that they had mastered the art of flight, Teddy Roosevelt decided to send American naval warships around the globe, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series (a feat they have never yet repeated), and six automobiles set out on an incredible 20,000 mile race from New York City to Paris via the frozen Bering Strait. A charming and knowledgeable guide, Rasenberger takes readers back to a time of almost limitless optimism, even in the face of enormous inequality, an era when the majority of Americans believed that the future was bound to be better than the past, that the world’s worst problems would eventually be solved, and that nothing at all was impossible. As Thomas Edison succinctly said that year, “Anything, everything is possible.”

This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Superbly reported and written with clarity, insight, and great skill." —Washington Post Book World After two decades, Washington Post journalist Blaine Harden returned to his small-town birthplace in the Pacific Northwest to follow the rise and fall of the West’s most thoroughly conquered river. To explore the Columbia River and befriend those who collaborated in its destruction, he traveled on a monstrous freight barge sailing west from Idaho to the Grand Coulee Dam, the site of the river’s harnessing for the sake of jobs, electricity, and irrigation. A River Lost is a searing personal narrative of rediscovery joined with a narrative of exploitation: of Native Americans, of endangered salmon, of nuclear waste, and of a once-wild river. Updated throughout, this edition features a new foreword and afterword.

Book excerpt: ABE: (looks around nervously) Swede…? He looks for SWEDEN again, and again sees only the tops of the bushes, roaring in the wind. A beat later there is another crack! Another splash! ABE whips around. He sees, a few feet out, what at first appears to be a human arm reaching up from a gurgling eddy—deaden spidery fingers groping. He focuses his eyes upon it: the pressure stops cold as we see it is merely a gnarled branch. ABE exhales. Then, as driftwood is proving scarce on the island, he breaks off some willow stems and tries to fish the branch closer. The current dislodges it as he looks on and it floats down stream, bobbing and turning on the waves. ABE watches it go; it looks rather like a hand again; gesturing to him, summon-ing. A real hand suddenly lands on his shoulder. He spins around. It is SWEDEN; he is shining a Coleman lantern directly into his eyes. SWEDEN: It’s gone now. There was a sound. Like…. ABE squints in the glare, which obscures SWEDEN’S face. ABE: (breathes hard, listens) It’s this awful wind. It roars such that I didn’t even hear you approach! SWEDEN hands ABE a flashlight. SWEDEN: Here. ABE: Where were they? SWEDEN: In the stern. Under the ballast. ABE: (exhales) I wish this wind would go down…. SWEDEN doesn’t say anything. There’s clearly something very wrong. ABE: What? SWEDEN: We’re not alone here. ACT 2, SCENE 12 EXT. THE FAR BANK. TWILIGHT. SWEDEN is standing with his back to us, facing the river. ABE approaches—he has taken the long way around the willows. SWEDEN turns slowly; the men look at each other. It is nearly dark. ABE: Sweden…? SWEDEN steps aside as the camera dollies past him and in on A CORPSE, a real one. It is caught up in the roots of the willows, several feet from the crumbling bank, chest-deep in the water, vertically positioned, bobbing up and down in a violent whirlpool. The corpse is wearing an Army-green or dark blue nylon parka, slick from the river, with a sopping fur-lined hood. The hood droops, obscuring the face from the top of the mouth up, the mouth which is stretched, contorted, whose chin is far too long. The whole body is stiff like a statue, its flesh an ashen gray-blue. Its hands are twisted and groping, like tree branches—willow branches. One is frozen with Rigor Mortis in such a way that it appears to be reaching out, its fingers gnarled, misshapen; they are too-long, really, to seem entirely human. The bony, branch-like index finger seems almost to be pointing, indicting the sky. ABE: My God, Sweden…. (turns to his friend) What happened here?
