Book Japan s Quest for Stability in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Japan s Quest for Stability in Southeast Asia written by Taizo Miyagi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other region in the world, Asia has witnessed tremendous change in the post-war era. A continent once engulfed by independence and revolution, and later by the Cold War and civil war, has now been transformed into the world’s most economically dynamic region. What caused this change in Asia? The key to answering this question lies in the post-war history of maritime Asia and, in particular, the path taken by the maritime nation of Japan. Analysing the importance of Japan’s relationship with Southeast Asia, this book therefore aims to illustrate the hidden trail left by Japan during the period of upheaval that has shaped Asia today—an era marked by the American Cold War strategy, the dissolution of the British Empire in Asia, and the rise of China. It provides a comprehensive account of post-war maritime Asia, making use of internationally sourced primary materials, as well as declassified Japanese government papers. As such, Japan's Quest for Stability in Southeast Asia will be useful to students and scholars of Japanese Politics, Asian Politics and Asian History.

Book Ethiopia in Transit

Download or read book Ethiopia in Transit written by Pietro Toggia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings in this edition explore historical and contemporary issues in Ethiopia as the country underwent change and celebrated its new millennium. However, despite the recognizance of socio-economic and political changes, Ethiopia still faces enduring problems and challenges to its stability and continuity. The political past haunts the country while it is facing the future with optimism and hope. The contributors in this edition examine historical and contemporaneous issues with different lenses; they investigate the multiplicity and complexity of the contradictions that define traditional and modern Ethiopia. The contributions highlight the significance of the instability, dislocation, conflict and transformation inherent in any society. None of these writings, however, celebrate the forces that create the conflict; they are cautious not to glorify the present and romanticize the past. On the contrary, they seek to contextualize the challenges which the country faces with a view to open a dialogue, not exclusively among Ethiopians, but with scholars and social activists in the rest of Africa, as well as the international community. The contributions cover and examine such important topics as historiography, political power and legitimacy, ideology and radical views, knowledge transmission and modernity, emigration and the Ethiopian Diaspora, ethnic and linguistic identity, patriarchy and feminist discourses in a traditional society, public policies and economic development, traditional and modern art and culture, and neo-liberalism and globalization. This book was published as a special issue of African Identities.

Book In the Wake of Tacoma

Download or read book In the Wake of Tacoma written by Richard Scott and published by Amer Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Wake of Tacoma is the first comprehensive treatment of the changes that the 1940 collapse of the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge has imposed on the design of suspension bridges. Written as a historical narrative, this heavily illustrated book describes design trends before the collapse, the collapse itself, and the investigations to determine its cause. The book then examines subsequent aerodynamic and other design developments and their application in suspension bridges worldwide in the decades following the collapse. In the Wake of Tacoma is a comprehensive reference work on suspension bridges in general, examining virtually every suspension bridge of note built in the past sixty years and highlighting overall development of the state of the art today. It goes beyond the major, well-known bridges to examine many small and mid-span suspension bridges worldwide that have contributed significantly to the modern development of the form. Also covered are the engineering debates and engineers involved; discussions of bridges under construction and under design; and new design concepts and materials to conquer the huge distances envisaged for such crossings as the Messina and Gibraltar straits. Presented in easy-to-understand, nontechnical language, this book, which received the 2006 Publication Award from the Japan Association for Wind Engineering, should appeal to both engineers and nonengineers with an interest in bridges and engineering in general. About the Author Richard Scott is a waterway heritage planner for Parks Canada, where he is currently responsible for palnning along the Trent-Severn waterway. He is also the editor of History of the Modern Suspension Bridge: Solving the Dilemma between Economy and Stiffness (ASCE Press, 2010). Product Reviews ...An outstanding history of suspension bridges focusing on post-Tacoma spans... In the Wake of Tacoma is extremely visual and written in a style that makes it accessible, exciting and interesting to both engineers and the general public. It is a masterful study- well researched, written, and illustrated. --Eric DeLony, Chief, Historic American Engineering Record, National Park Service

Book International Finance Regulation

Download or read book International Finance Regulation written by Georges Ugeux and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the global market expands, the need for international regulation becomes urgent Since World War II, financial crises have been the result of macroeconomic instability until the fatidic week end of September 15 2008, when Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. The financial system had become the source of its own instability through a combination of greed, lousy underwriting, fake ratings and regulatory negligence. From that date, governments tried to put together a new regulatory framework that would avoid using taxpayer money for bailout of banks. In an uncoordinated effort, they produced a series of vertical regulations that are disconnected from one another. That will not be sufficient to stop finance from being instable and the need for international and horizontal regulation is urgent. This challenge is the focus of Georges Ugeux’s book. International Finance Regulation: The Quest for Financial Stability focuses on the inspirations behind regulation, and examines the risks and consequences of fragmentation on a global scale. Author Georges Ugeux has four decades of experience in the legal and economic aspects of international business operations. He created and run the New York Stock Exchange’sinternational group in charge of developing the NYSE’s reach to non-US companies, including relationships with regulators and governments. Ugeux teaches European Banking and Finance of the Columbia University School of Law. Ugeux is uniquely positioned to provide recommendations and suggestions from the perspective of a top global authority. In the book, he explores international regulation with topics such as: • Laws, regulations, and risks of overregulation • Transformation of the U.S. market and creation of the Eurozone • Development of a global framework and stability of the banking system • In-depth examination of Basel III, the Dodd-Frank Act, the European Banking Union, and the Volcker Rule The book also contains case studies from real-world scenarios like Lehman, CDS, Greece, the London Whale, and Libor to illustrate the concepts presented. Finance consistently operates within an increasingly global paradigm, and an overarching regulation scheme is becoming more and more necessary for sustainable growth. International Finance Regulation: The Quest for Financial Stability presents an argument for collaboration toward a comprehensive global regulation strategy.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former students of Dr H. J. Witteveen and many of those who collaborated with him in the past decades have decided a while ago that his great scientific and social merits are ample reason for presenting him with a Liber Amicorum. The fortieth anniversary of his appointment as professor at the Netherlands School of Economics in Rotterdam in the Spring of 1988 seemed a suitable time for presentation. For this purpose a committee was formed consisting of the members listed below. The last three of these also act as editorial committee of this anniversary volume. The topic the editorial committee chose is 'The quest for national and global economic stability'; this topic has always attracted Dr Witteveen's special attention and is in fact the common theme of his publications and speeches. In compiling this volume, the editorial committee tried to give expression to the three fields in which Dr Witt eve en developed his main activities: university, politics and international economic organizations. The committee is deeply grateful to the authors who promised and supplied their contributions with great enthusiasm. All contributions were completed before August 1, 1987.
